1 Climate Adapted Farming on Mt. Elgon (CAFÉ) Resilience Project Project Implementation Period: April 1, 2013 September 30, 2016

2 Project Location and Goal Bi-national resilience-oriented project located on the slopes of Mt. Elgon; Mbale- Uganda, and Bungoma- Kenya Contribute toward increased resilience of people, places and livelihoods.

3 PARTNERS Gumutindo Coffee Cooperative Enterprise U Ltd. (GCCE) with 22 primary societies in Uganda Bungoma County Coffee Development Group (BUCCODEG) with 6 primary societies in Kenya Direct beneficiaries 9814 (6996 M and 2822 W) smallholder coffee producers in Kenya.

4 Project Objectives Sustainable and equitable services. Increase incomes. Protect farmers agricultural assets in the face of changing climates and environmental degradation.

7 CAFÉ Results and the Five Capitals CAPITALS Social Adaptive CAPACITIES Transformative 80% of farmers purchased crop insurance 98% of farmers expressed satisfaction with the services provided by their organization Human 100% of farmers know at least one way to mitigate climate change effects on their coffee crops Physical 90% of farmers purchased seedlings from their farmer organization at least once Natural 100% of farmers use at least one agroforestry practice on their plantations Economic 100% of farmers grow at least one of the climate-adapted crop varieties 100% of leaders show at least two of the leadership skills they were trained in 100% of farmers report feeling prepared to manage the effects of weather-related shocks 58% of members acquire inputs from their farmer organization

11 LESSONS ON RESILIENCE FRAMEWORK APPLY RESILIENCE FRAMEWORK TO INFORM THE PROJECT DESIGN - Need For A Clear Resilience Theory Of Change USE ATTRIBUTES TO HELP DETERMINE IDEAL INTERVENTIONS PARTICIPATORY EVALUATION IMPROVES RESILIENCE LEARNING/EDUCATION FOR ALL STAKEHOLDERS Because Resilience Capacities Can Be Highly Contextual And They Aren t Static Different Methods Useful For Different Stakeholders VALUE IN USING THE FRAMEWORK FOR BETTER TARGETING
