PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE Technical knowledge expert for the Grow Africa Smallholder Working Group of agribusiness companies working in Africa and globally on smallholder-inclusive commercial value chain development. Direct reporting to IDH, Netherlands (January 2015 current) Developing technical briefing papers on a range of issues, including side-selling, land, finance and service delivery models to influence smallholder-inclusive agri-business models. Interviewing a range of agribusinesses on their current work with smallholder farmers in Africa. Grow Africa Documentation of best practices in smallholder-inclusive agricultural value chain financing in Africa for African Rural Agricultural and Credit Association (AFRACA), Kenya (September 2013 November 2013) Research on smallholder-inclusive agricultural value chain financing, including interviews with a wide range of experts, including private equity investors, social impact investors, commercial banks, micro-finance institutions and NGOs. (May 2006 March 2008) Raised the profile of social protection across CARE internationally, to enable CARE to become a more significant international player. Developed a social protection paper for CARE HQ and field offices outlining key concepts and debates surrounding social protection and CARE s role and position on this issue. Produced and disseminated a paper on the role of NGOs in Social Protection through DFID s Regional Hunger & Vulnerability Programme network. Provided technical support to CARE country offices on social protection responses (including influencing development of national policies and programmes) in Zambia, Lesotho and Malawi. Developed Oxfam s regional policy around predictable responses to chronic food insecurity, linking to social protection approaches. (Sept 2004 Sept 2005) Initiated process to change the national food security response from emergency food relief to a national hunger safety net programme, with Government, DFID and FAO. Key player in national food security fora, including revision of national food security assessment process and methodologies, and reworking the national contingency planning process. Redesigned Oxfam s humanitarian programme in Turkana (pastoralist livelihoods), to transit out of emergency food relief through a multi-annual cash transfer programme targeted at predictable food insecurity.
