NIFA-funded research spans problems and issues encompassed within 13 national emphasis areas Agricultural Systems Animals Biotechnology & Genomics Economics & Community Development Education Environment & Natural Resources Families, Youth & Communities Food, Nutrition & Health International Pest Management Plants Technology & Engineering NIFA Research Programs Each of these national emphasis areas includes one or more NIFA programs, each a compendium of related NIFA research, education, and extension activities A program highly pertinent to USC is the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) - see next chart Types of Research NIFA-funded research may be basic or applied Basic research discovers the underlying processes and systems that make a plant, animal, ecosystem, food system, community, or marketplace work For example, basic research might seek to discover the genetic map of a plant or animal, or show how economic and human resources affect economic growth in rural areas Applied research expands on basic research findings to uncover practical ways in which new knowledge can be advanced to benefit individuals and society Here, researchers might use a genetic map to develop gene therapies to treat human diseases or develop new programs to enhance community capital and stability in rural communities Each RFA may generate from 2 to more than 600 applications, which then undergo a rigorous review process That review is conducted by a panel of 3 to 25 individuals with international-level expertise in the field in question These panels review each application, evaluating it based on its scientific merits and how well it addresses the research priorities determined by Congress and the NIFA stakeholder input process, and the quality of the facilities and researchers who would conduct the project A summary of the panel review for each eligible application is recorded, and the panel recommends whether or not it should be funded Funding opportunities at: Listing of RFAs present and near future

What: The Higher Education Challenge (HEC) Grants Program is a NIFA-administered competitive grants program focused on improving formal, postsecondary-level agricultural sciences education HEC-funded projects provide funding to eligible applicants to help ensure a competent, qualified and diverse workforce will exist to serve the food, agricultural and human sciences system At the same time, HEC-funded projects improve the economic health and viability of rural communities through the development of degree programs emphasizing new and emerging employment opportunities Finally, HEC projects focus on the national challenge to increase the number and diversity (ie, having an agricultural sciences workforce representative of the Nation s population) of students entering the food, agricultural and human sciences Therefore, applications submitted to this grants program must state how the funded project will address the two HEC Program Goals: To increase the number and diversity of students who will pursue and complete a postsecondary degree in the food, agricultural and human sciences, and To enhance the quality of postsecondary instruction in order to help meet current and future national food, agricultural and human sciences workplace needs Who colleges and universities having a demonstrable capacity to carry out the teaching of food and agricultural sciences Eligible institutions must demonstrate capacity for, and a significant ongoing commitment to, the teaching of food, agricultural and human sciences generally, and to the specific need and/or discipline(s) for which a grant is requested How Much: Applicants may request up to $150,000 (total, not per year) for a Regular Project Proposal Applicants may request up to $300,000 (total, not per year) for a Joint Project Proposal Applicants may request up to $750,000 (total, not per year) for a large-scale (state or region) comprehensive initiatives (LCI) Project Proposal A grant recipient must match 25% of the Federal funds awarded from non-federal sources When: 10 April 2014 USDA NIFA Higher Education Challenge Where: NIFA Funding Opportunity Number - USDA-NIFA-CGP

USDA NIFA Current Research Information Sytem The Current Research Information System (CRIS) provides documentation and reporting for ongoing agricultural, food science, human nutrition, and forestry research, education and extension activities for the United States Department of Agriculture, with a focus on the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) grant programs Projects are conducted or sponsored by USDA research agencies, state agricultural experiment stations, land-grant universities, other cooperating state institutions, and participants in NIFA-administered grant programs, including Small Business Innovation Research, and Agriculture and Food Research Initiative

Competitive Grants Program Overview USDA/NIFA Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) The Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) at the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) is charged with funding research, education, and extension grants and integrated research, extension, and education grants that address key problems of National, regional, and multi-state importance in sustaining all components of agriculture, including farm efficiency and profitability, ranching, renewable energy, forestry (both urban and agroforestry), aquaculture, rural communities and entrepreneurship, human nutrition, food safety, biotechnology, and conventional breeding Providing this support requires that AFRI advances fundamental sciences in support of agriculture and coordinates opportunities to build on these discoveries This will necessitate efforts in education and extension that deliver science-based knowledge to people, allowing them to make informed practical decisions Project types supported by AFRI within this area include single-function Research Projects, multi-function Integrated Projects, and Food and Agricultural Science Enhancement (FASE) Grants

USDA/NIFA Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) What: In the last several years NIFA has issued seven RFAs for the AFRI Program: Foundational Program addressing the six AFRI priority areas a) Plant Health and Production and Plant Products b) Animal Health and Production and Animal Products c) Food Safety, Nutrition, and Health d) Renewable Energy, Natural Resources, and Environment e) Agriculture Systems and Technology f) Agricultural Economics and Rural Communities g) Critical Agricultural Research and Extension (CARE) h) Exploratory Challenge Areas (5): a) Childhood Obesity Prevention b) Climate Change c) Food Safety d) Global Food Security e) Sustainable Bioenergy NIFA Fellowships Grant Program soliciting Pre and Postdoctoral applications Applications for AFRI funds may also be solicited through other announcements including supplemental AFRI RFAs or in conjunction with multi agency programs How Much: Standard Grants must not exceed $500,000 total (including indirect costs) for project periods of up to 5 years RFA When: Letter of Intent Deadline Application Deadline Where: Request for Application Required for most programs for FY2014 competition due date in for FY2014 program, February for LOI programs, May 22, 2013 (5:00 pm ET) for other
