3 INTRODUCTION The Government establish the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (MWFCD) : to address all issues relating to women and to promote gender equality and women s empowerment throughout government. creation and promotion of community and social awareness programme as well as the progression of the nation s social development objectives aspects especially those relating to social welfare, in line with the Caring and Developed Society, emphasized in the nation s Wawasan 2020 (Vision 2020).

4 INSTITUTIONS/MINISTRIES THAT FOCUS ON GENDER The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) is responsible to provide data for the ministry. The Director of Population and Housing Census Statistics Division is appointed as the Gender Focal Point (Social, Health, Education) for the Department. DOSM has conducted several Censuses/Surveys which serve as major sources of gender statistics for Malaysia. They are: Agriculture Census (every 10 years) Economic Census-Agriculture (every 5 years) Population and Housing Census (every 10 years) Labour Force Survey (Monthly) Household Income Survey (Twice in 5 years)

7 LABOUR FORCE SURVEY - WOMEN'S PARTICIPATION The survey population is defined to cover persons who live in private living quarters and hence excludes persons residing in institutions such as hotels, hostels, hospitals, prisons, boarding houses and military barracks. The survey comprises the economically active and inactive population. To measure the economically active population, the Labour Force Survey uses the age limit of 15 to 64 years. The economically active population comprises those employed and unemployment whereas those who are inactive is classified as outside labour force.

10 WOMEN OWNED Refers to the establishment with at least 51 per cent and above of the equity held by a woman/women OR largest shareholder are woman and establishment run by woman OR the Managing Director or Chief Executive Officer is a woman who own at least 10 per cent of the equity. 12 GENDER ISSUES IN AGRICULTURE- MALAYSIA Less than 30% of women are involved in the agriculture sector Less women are involved in fisheries sector. This is due to working condition as well as their domestic responsibility.

13 CONCLUSION Statistics collected by DOSM are already gender sensitised The publication on gender statistics is in the pipeline and due to be publish in 2013
