7 What Comes Off... Must Go Back. As the need to drive production systems to their maximum becomes more and more necessary for many farms to realise their potential, so does the need to be aware of the increased pressure this production places on the nutritional status of our soils. To counter the removal of nutrients we must replace them using fertilisers but what are we taking out each time and how do we determine what needs to go back in? The most accurate way is to soil test paddocks to determine the nutrient status of the soil. A soil test will tell you where you are in terms of nutritional status in relation to your ideal target, which is a good start, but it will not account for what you are going to produce in the following season. The table outlines the removal of the macro nutrients, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, sulphur and calcium along with some of the main trace elements for some of our most measurable outputs. Being deficient in any one of these, or any other nutrient, will result in reduced production and profitability. Grazing animals take their fair share of nutrients, especially once you convert the production to a per hectare basis, but the one that is commonly underestimated is conserved fodder. Because both silage and hay are cut around the seed production stage of most plant growth cycles, they take out large amounts of nutrients, especially nitrogen and potassium. If this fodder is sold, rather than being reinvested back in the on-farm livestock, then it is lost to the system and needs to be accounted for when doing a nutrient budget. Your local Landmark Agronomist is well equipped to sample and interpret the results of your soil tests but to give you the most accurate report and a true representation of your nutrient budget they must consider what you are going to take out in the next growing season. This will prevent mining of your precious nutrient reserve and enable you to increase or maintain your fertility. Growing anything, be it meat, wool, or milk, requires the consumption of large amounts of grass, which draws most of its nutrition from the soil. The more we take off, the more we need to put back.
