1 Michigan Forage Variety Trial Report Kim Cassida, Joe Paling, and Christian Kapp 2017 Conditions. Temperatures were mild during the winter of 2016/2017. April was cool, and below normal temperatures continued through the first half of May. Precipitation totals were above average at all three locations during April. Daily rainfall, monthly totals and multi-year averages from April through October in 2017 at East Lansing in southern Lower Michigan, Lake City in northern Lower Michigan, and Chatham in the Upper Peninsula are in Appendix Tables I, II, and III, respectively. Conditions were variable across the state during the summer months. After the wet spring, East Lansing quickly became dry with rainfall totals well below normal for May through September. Lake City rainfall was above average in June, but slightly below average the remaining months in Monthly precipitation totals at Chatham in the Upper Peninsula were well above average in May, June and slightly above average in August. All three locations were wet during October, limiting the possibility of a late fall harvest Forage Trial Summary. Four trials were established at East Lansing in Alfalfa, perennial grass, annual grass, and red clover trials were seeded in May at East Lansing. One perennial grass trial was established in late July at Lake City and alfalfa trials (conventional and RR) were seeded in the summer at Chatham. Research trials were harvested on schedule for most of the summer. First cutting was slightly ahead of previous years for both grass and alfalfa trials at East Lansing and Lake City. First cutting at Chatham was scheduled around the frequent rains during the month of June. Second cutting yields of alfalfa and perennial cool-season grasses at East Lansing were respectable, but third and fourth cutting yields were very low. Lake City yields were excellent for second cutting because rainfall timing and amount was ideal after first cutting. Alfalfa Variety Trials Alfalfa trials (conventional and RR) seeded from 2014 to 2017 were harvested in Alfalfa trials were cut four or five times at East Lansing and three times at Lake City and Chatham. Dry conditions at East Lansing resulted in low yields for cuts 2 through 4. The 2014 seeding planted on a Colwood Brookston loam had a slightly greater yield than trials planted on the Capac loam soil. Therefore the soil type that results in difficult growing conditions during a wet year had the highest yield potential during a dry year. The 2014 seeding had enough fall growth to harvest for a fifth time before the soil became too wet to support the equipment. Fall growth in the other two seedings did reach a harvestable yield, however, soil moisture levels were too high to adequately support the equipment without potentially damaging the alfalfa crowns. Lake City harvests were on schedule in 2017, with first cutting on June 6, second cut in the second week of July, and third and final cut on September 1. Cutting dates at Chatham were June 22, August 2, and October 4. Yields for specific tests, establishment years, and locations are shown in Tables 1 to 16 (see List of Tables). Red Clover Variety Trial A red clover variety trial was seeded in May at East Lansing. This is the first red clover trial to be established in several years. An excellent stand was achieved. Weeds were controlled by spraying and cutting (no yield data). Yield data from a second cutting are reported in Table 29. Very little growth occurred in the red clover after the second cutting.

2 Perennial Cool-Season Grass Variety Trials Several cool-season grass species have been seeded in trials at the three locations since Grass maturity and the subsequent date of first cutting was earlier this year than previous years. The earlier harvest date at East Lansing may have helped increase some of the yields obtained in second cutting because regrowth may have benefited from remaining soil moisture and cool temperatures. Established tests were cut three times at East Lansing and Lake City in Trials at Chatham were harvested one or two times, depending on species, in Yields for specific tests, establishment years, and locations are shown in Tables 17 to 27 (see List of Tables). Annual Grass variety Trial Seven varieties of Italian ryegrass, two varieties of oats, and an annual ryegrass check were evaluated in an annual grass trial seeded in May 2017 at East Lansing. The stands were excellent and herbicide weed control was not necessary. Yields were low after first cut due to the dry conditions. The oat varieties and the annual ryegrass variety were headed at each cutting date. None of the Italian ryegrass varieties headed during this seeding year season. Winter survival of the Italian ryegrass varieties is anticipated for additional yield evaluation next spring. Yields of the annual grass trial are listed in Table 28.
