Urban Bees and Gardens distributes beetrees to community gardens and urban beeks Their survival rate is better than most regular hive designs, due to genetics better insulation extensive layering of propolis

Before naked apes showed up, trees and caves were the natural / only home for bees.

Honeybees are from Africa. Hives brought west by early immigrants. Log sections and tree hives are still used in Europe. Commercial Hobbyist

Queens can t lay eggs in very used honeycomb. Hive dies / wax moth larvae eat away wax Opens space again for new swarms to reoccupy Each hatching bee leaves a thin cocoon behind.. They layer up until cells are too small and round for use

How to deal with beetrees best case scenario You can see the bees flying. Cavity is near ground / not complicated to cut out. Tree is 18 or les in dia / clear of utilities / structures. All involved are cool with bees. Tree work not on an emergency schedule. Tree is sound and does not need to be moved. but

here are work arounds for the real world. Tips to help know if a tree has living bees inside Rare for bees to be in trees under 12 dia. Sometimes the homeowner / nearby property owner will know Bees won t fly under 55 degs, tho they will take poop flights on windless even cold winter days.

Cold season tips If a beetree falls, cover bee area ASAP with tarp / blanket to help them live. Can wait until evening if bees are aggressive. Well come out asap to rescue them get them to warm room. Bees bulls both seek shelter

Cold season tips Look for Comb just inside opening Thin to thick red / brown shiny tar like glue called propolis Might smell sweet like honey or musty Call / text / us pics as needed. Common brown/red layer of tarlike propolis to look for

Please try NOT to do... cut up cavity into short sections assures hive death

Bee behavior variables Hives like other critters, have personalities How aggressive bees are depends on Their genetics. Most are fairly to very gentle. Time of day / weather conditions warm sunny / no wind is best. How much they get shaken a little is ok they usu don t mind chain saws. How much time they are disturbed. Some are good for hours others will give you mins.

Steps for most beetree projects Get / ubagpdx@gmail.com in your phone. Data to send: Pics of tree one of hole/s 2 nd of tree with ground too 3 rd of area between tree and drivable surface. Est elevation of hole and tree diameter where hole is. Job date range. Info of property owner / resident / neighbor as needed. We can come out with scope to determine how strong hive is / where cavity is relative to hole.

Steps for most beetree projects Do site visit or have UBAG be there before bees are flying to close entrance with 8 mesh / install trap out as needed. We have bee clothing for arborists to use if wanted. We stay either stay on site or return when cavity section is about to be dropped. Cutting 2 feet above and below hole usu captures the whole cavity. Once dropped, arborists sometimes help trim excess length and or girth and help move section toward or into our trailer, but is not required. TV likes these projects. It informs the public about bee challenges and how arborists and beekeepers are working to mitigate a serious species and food security problem.

Dealing with just kill em folk Bees in trees are some of the BEST bees because they are surviving without any human help. Poor genetics, like short lived industrial ag cows, as a huge issue for bee survival. Cost is sometimes a factor too beetree removal runs from $200 to $1000. Arborists need to add their additional costs too. UBAG is flexible and creative with local fundraising, spreading out and sharing costs, etc.

Let healthy beetrees stand If tree can be left standing, invite a beekeeper to install swarm lures to try and catch swarms the beetree may throw off between March and July. Strong hives might split 3 to 4 times.

Mapping known beetrees Urban Bees and Gardens has a growing list of beetrees throughout the metro area. If you know of beetrees or come across one, let us know its address, and property owner if applies, so we can help the bees living in beetrees. Thanks!
