1 University of Missouri Extension April 1, April 30, 2016 Proposals Hollings Manufacturing Extension Time Period: 10/1/2016 9/30/2021 Dept of Commerce Amount: $10,387,136 Description: The MU BDP is perfectly positioned to serve as the catalyst and liaison among major research universities, community colleges, economic development agencies at the state and local level, manufacturing research, various support systems and the manufacturing firms throughout Missouri. Using an innovative business model supported by a strong statewide and district outreach and service strategies, the reinvigorated manufacturing extension partnership in Missouri will work with its partners to grow the next generation of Missouri manufacturing. FY17 Kansas City 21 st CCLC CoHorts 7 & 8 Beth Rasa Edwards Time Period: 7/1/2016 6/30/2017 Local Investment Comm Amount: $382,806 Description: The 4-H /Linc project focuses on a select number of elementary and K-8 schools in the Kansas City area which meet the criteria of targeted for school improvement and may be academically deficient. The goal of Extension s involvement is to improve academic outcomes and assure that youth are prepared for successful and productive adulthood. Missouri Building Entrepreneurial Capacity Time Period: 9/1/2016 8/31/2018 Mo Tech Corporation Amount: $254,872 Description: The Tech-Entrepreneurship Event Series Program (TECH-SERIES) led by the University of Missouri Extension and supported by multiple partners in mid-missouri, identifies and validates promising technologies, and assists technology-based entrepreneurs in early stage development by facilitating education, technical assistance and capital for commercialization. The current proposal expands the goals using the lessons learned, including a new curriculum, enhancing more partnerships and fusing the Coulter-Biomedical Accelerator (aka MU Coulter Program) to directly support MU Faculty in clinical and engineering research. Fire and Arson Investigation Training David Hedrick Time Period: 7/1/2016 6/30/2018 US Dept of Homeland Security Amount: $111,353 Description: MU Fire and Rescue Training Institute will use a proven training program that includes a hands-on realistic fire cause determination module with a mobile arson simulator trailer to conduct Arson Prevention and Investigator training statewide. The course meets prerequisite training requirements for the state's certified fire investigator program and provide required continuing education credit for state Fire Investigators.
2 The Greater Kansas City Early Care and Education Study Tracy Greever Rice Time Period: 2/15/ /15/2016 The Family Conservancy Amount: $39,069 Description: Extension s Office of Social and Economic Development will support Phase 2 of a geographically focused survey (census) of state license child care centers, accredited programs, licensed family child care programs, and public school districts in Wyandotte and Johnson Counties in Kansas. Appraising the Potential of a Hops Industry in Missouri James Quinn Time Period: 11/01/ /31/2018 Mo Dept of Ag Amount: $29,966 Description: Craft brewing and locally produced beer has swept the country, and reinvigorated the idea (and demand) for locally sourced hops. This project will appraise and aide the potential of a hops industry for Missouri and the Great Plains environment. It will do so by addressing several facets- production issues, market demand, grower collaboration, infrastructure needs and information sharing. USB Herbicide Resistant Weeds and Crops Kevin Bradley Time Period: 10/1/2016 9/30/2017 Purdue University Amount: $25,000 Description: Extension s Agriculture faculty will disseminate research results and recommendations related to the management of herbicide resistance in weeds, and specifically glyphosate-resistant weeds. Missouri Geographic Alliance Shannon White Time Period: 9/1/ /1/2017 National Geographic Society Education Foundation Amount: $27,500 Description: The Missouri Geographic Alliance in will continue its 29-year history to create opportunities for citizens, educators and youth in Missouri to understand the significance of geography in their own lives and work. The Missouri Geographic alliance strives to: 1) raise public awareness about geographic knowledge and skills 2) become the leading source of information and research about geography in the state of Missouri 3) increase the quality and quantity of geographic education in Missouri and 4) continue to be a financially and operationally sustainable organization.
3 St. Louis Storytelling Festival Youth Performances Lisa Overholser Time Period: 1/1/ /31/2017 Arts and Education Council of Greater St. Louis Amount: $5,000 Description: MU Extension Community Arts Program hosts the 37th St. Louis Storytelling Festival May 4-7, This 4-day festival celebrates live storytelling, with professional tellers performing at venues across the St. Louis area. Festival Tellers make connections to educational curricula at Festival sites, but to strengthen the long-term educational impact, our 2016 Festival will lay the foundation for more interactive & peer-to-peer opportunities for youth that build upon the Festival experience and further develop skills of young tellers in their own authentic voices. We will do this through a new GHOST Festival Slam and ensuing workshop series, and in ongoing work with our Deaf storytelling program, the St. Louis Story Stitchers, and MMC Starlight youth tellers from Taiwan. On-Farm Investigation of the Optimum Planting Date for Garlic in Southwest Missouri Pat Byers Time Period: 11/05/ /04/2018 Missouri State University Amount: $2,000 Description: Extension s Agriculture faculty will work with Missouri State to study and determine optimum planting dates for garlic cultivars in Southwest Missouri.
4 University of Missouri Extension April 1, 2016 April 30, 2016 Awards Mid-America Trade Adjustment Assistance Centers Time Period: 4/1/2016 3/31/2021 US Dept of Commerce Amount: $1,120,889 Description: As a regional center for the Trade Adjustment Assistance for Firms (TAAF) program, the Mid-America TAAC provides market-based investments in domestic manufacturers located in Missouri, Kansas and Arkansas that are adversely impacted by competition with imports. Statewide Study on High Oleic (HO) Soybeans, HO Meal, and HO Oil. Raymond Massey Time Period: 7/1/2016 5/31/2017 Missouri Soybean Merchandising Council Amount: $74,354 Description: The University of Missouri Extension will conduct a marketing study on High Oleic soybeans. Some of the components of the study are to compare the chemical and physical composition; determine the competitive opportunities of HO soybeans; estimate the domestic and export demand; and investigate the opportunities to produce and market non-gmo HO soybeans, HO Meal and HO oil. Missouri Soybean Branded Seed Project Raymond Massey Time Period: 4/1/ /31/2016 Missouri Soybean Merchandising Council Amount: $72,432 Description: The University of Missouri Extension will develop a marketing / branding feasibility that will 1) document the current capabilities of the MSMC to enter into the seed market; 2) evaluate the business value of developing a unique brand of MSMC seeds; 3) evaluate how such a business /brand would fit into the current seed marketplace; 4) evaluate various best business structures for their likelihood to succeed; 5) estimate the labor and financial needs of the optimal seed business Sustainability Evaluation of a Solid-Liquid Manure Separation Operation Teng Teeh Lim Time Period: 11/1/2015 8/30/2018 National Pork board Amount: $71,993 Description: This proposal looks to collaborate with livestock farmers and a team of researchers to provide: 1) Systematic evaluation of a modified solid/liquid manure separation finishing barn for manure nutrient stabilization and recovery; 2) Identification of the minimal or different levels of pre-treatment and filtration of the liquid manure, for practical fertilizer concentrate, transportation, and potential water recycling; and 3) Projection of the cost implications and returns of the barn, storage systems, and different levels of nutrient and water recycling, while considering carbon, water, and land footprints.
5 2016 Food and Nutrition Services Summer Workshop Jewell Coffman Time Period: 4/1/ /31/2016 Mo Dept of Elementary and Secondary Education Amount: $44,000 Description: The University, through its Extension Conference Office will work with MO DESE to arrange for the 2016 Food and Nutrition Workshops. Preventing and Responding to Future Disease Outbreak Teeh Teng Lim Time Period: 4/1/2016 9/30/2017 University of Nebraska Lincoln Amount: $46,280 Description: This project aims to combine and convey a complete set of biosecurity protocols for livestock and poultry producers. The information will contain the latest information of biosecurity, carcass disposal methods (including in-barn composting), regional regulations, and quarantine and eradication. There will be five regional workshops offered within the state of Missouri, targeting livestock and poultry producers, farm managers, and Extension personnel. The biosecurity toolkits will be offered and explained to 200 participants (averaging 40 participants per workshop). Upon workshop completion, they will have the tools, training, and motivation to reevaluate and implement biosecurity protocols. The change in knowledge and actions are expected to better prepare regional producers for potential disease outbreak, in terms of prevention, and eradication. The information will be published on the University of Missouri Extension website, and can be useful for other livestock and production states. Economic Contribution of Missouri's Animal Industries Joe Horner Time Period: 3/1/2016 5/31/2016 Mo Soybean Merchandising Council Amount: $37,873 Description: Missouri has vibrant animal agriculture production and processing industries. To understand their importance to the state and local economy, a report will be developed to quantify the economic importance of these industries. A multi-industry contribution analysis will be completed for the entire state and also for each Missouri county.
