1 THE SYSTEMIC TECHNIQUE TO PRODUCE BEIJING COMB- HONEY WHICH IS CHINESE PATENT Senior engineer Liu jinzu and Wu zhonggao Beijing Apiculture and Silk Worm Administrative Center No.8 Yumin Zhonglu Rd.Beijing,100029,China. Fax: , Phone: Abstract Comb-honey is a kind of natural honey which storage in the bee cells and all is seal naturally, Beijng comb-honey is designed based on the bee biology characteristic, fitting the natural behavior of bee is its most peculiarity. As far as the technique of production is concerned, which main including of the following seven aspects: 1. Feed high yield and strong colony of bees; 2. Choose high quality and richness bee plant; 3. Equipped with the corresponding tools; 4. Choose fine environment of production where forbid to use antibiotic and Insecticide; 5. Absolutely pure natural comb-honey production; 6. Must forbid to Produce wax-moth larva in comb-honey; 7. Avoid combhoney changing color because of long time storage Text Comb honey is the mature honey stored in bee cells and is all naturally sealed. Beijing comb honey is designed according to bee biological characteristics. As both the carrier of comb honey and the wrapping of products, honey combs have successfully removed the defects of cutting in honey production, being vulnerable to damage and pollution, inconvenience of storage and transportation and containing such contaminants as paraffin, turning double-face comb honey into single-face comb honey, cutting comb honey into natural single-block comb honey, ordinary comb honey production with comb foundations as a must into honey production without comb foundations, mixed comb honey of beeswax and paraffin into pure beeswax comb honey and mere comb honey needing wrapping for ordinary comb honey into neither the carrier nor the comb honey needing wrapping. The most distinctive characteristic about comb honey is its accordance with the natural habits of bees, allowing bees make full use of internal space during comb honey production to smooth produced comb honey and reducing the breeding of wax moth because of single-direction arrangement of bee cell foundation which is made of hard plastics resistant to breaking up. Of course, the beautiful crystal hexagonal plastic boxes, full of pure, dazzling and fragrant honey, with crispy and thin hexagonal bee cells by using beeswax, are not only food, but also an artwork which is admired by people and called wonderful masterpiece of nature. According to the inspection results by China State Bureau of Import and Export Commodities Inspection and many other authoritative departments. Beijing comb honey is rich in fruit sugar and glucose and balanced enzyme, vitamin, mineral substances, amino acid and fragrant substances, but without antibiotics, pesticide and other substances harmful to people health. The inspection report by Beijing Health Epidemic Prevention Station shows that the total colonies of Beijing comb honey are less than 10 per gram, the possible number for large intestines is less than 30 per 100 gram, no result from pathogenetic bacterium, per gram for microzyme and per gram for mildew, all in accord with the national standards and regulations. Therefore, Beijing comb honey is awarded the Surveyors Certificate of Health and Quality by Beijing Health Epidemic Prevention Proceedings of the 37 th International Apicultural Congress, 28 October 1 November 2001, Durban, South Africa APIMONDIA 2001 To be referenced as: Proc. 37 th Int. 2 Station. Beijing comb honey is really a kind of delicious and nutritious health care foodstuff, which is suitable for both the old and young and capable of preventing diseases and strengthening one s health. Because it is usually sealed evenly, thick with good taste and fully brewed by bees for use in famine, it is an unrivaled green food in comparison with ordinary honey. Moreover, comb honey contains not only beeswax, bee propolis, resin, larval cocoon as well as metabolin and secretion, but also organic fatty acid, pigment, tannide, cho, glycoside and microelements, which is capable of diminishing inflammation and tumescence, easing pains and relieving a cough, stopping bleeding and strengthening heart and favorable for urine. It also has restraining effects on golden staphylococcal bacteria, green pus bacillus, large intestine bacillus, diarrhea bacillus, typhoid bacillus and partial viruses, and has sound effects in curing hepatitis, nasosinusitis and rheumatoid arthritis. Indeed, Beijing comb honey, combining the functions of honey and honey combs as well as the natural nutrition of bee glue, resin and pollens which supplement each other, is of higher use value and medical value. It has certain remedial and assistant functions on heart diseases, high blood pressure, pulmonary diseases, cough, hepatitis, anaemia, constipation, scald, frostbite, nasosinusitis, gum inflammation, tummy bug and duodenum ulceration. Since its successful development in 1995, it won the Excellent Product Prize of China Forestry Exhibition and the title of Silver Prize of China Agriculture Exhibition successively. On May 27 th, 1996, it was granted the patent by China National Patent Bureau after a serious inspection, with the patent number ZL The main production technologies of Beijing comb honey are detailed as following: I. Raising technology of high-yield strong bee colonies. More bees in strong colonies can keep the hive temperature. The bees bred from strong colonies have a great physique, a long life and high foraging ability. Secondly, the honey-carrying ability of strong bee colonies is 60-70% greater than that of weak ones. Thirdly, in nectar flow, strong colonies adjust the humidity to lower than weak ones so as to evaporate the water in collected honey. So the honey is of high quality, well sealed and matures quickly. There are mangy technologies of raising strong bee colonies, which mainly include: i. Raising of two-queen colonies. It develops rapidly with two queens ovipositing. ii. Breeding of foraging bees of the right age. Try to foster over-wintering bees of the right age in Autumn, strengthen heat preservation in early Spring and implement stimulative and supplementary feeding, breed large numbers of foraging bees 45 days before the nectar flow and try to reach over 10 full frames in one colony during the honeyproducing period. iii. Controlling ovipositing of queens properly. Control the ovipositing of queens properly 7-10 days before nectar flow. For example, in short locust flow, no conditions are offered to the queens to oviposit until prosperous nectar flow. The oviposting of the queens are only limited properly in the apiary with short distance migratory and two blooming periods of locust; It is unfavorable to limit the ovipositing of queens for long time in long chaste flow. iv. Control excessive swarming. The following measures can be taken: producting royal jelly, increasing brood combs, changing empty brood combs, exchanging the places of strong colonies and weak ones, replacing the old queens with new queens and keeping strong colonies to collect honey and jelly, enhancing honey production. v. Rearing the fine strain Ka queens. They have strong foraging abilities and can make up big colonies. The fine-strain. Ka queens raised by Jinlin Apiary have good effects.

3 II. Technology of Selecting rich and high-quality nectar resource. Rich and high-quality nectar resources are the material basis of honey-production. The best time and routes are selected according to nectar resources, rules of nectar flowing and features of climate. Conduct short distance migration to collect honey and jelly prolonging the nectar resource bloom period and foraging time in short blooming periods relatively and ensuring high production of honey. But the blooming periods of nectar plants are different due to different latituded and sea levels. For example, the blooming period of locust in the south suburbs is earlier than that in Changpin and Miyun about one week. Chaste in Xishan,Bada bloom earlier than that in Mengtougou and the remote mountains area in Huairou about half a month. Locust in Tianjin and the south of Hebei province bloom earlier than that in Beijing. Take locust for example: i. Relationship between the plant kind and the quality of nectar. Under similar conditions, more nectar in red calyx than in green calyx and purple calyx. ii. Relationship between the quality of earth and the quality of nectar: more nectar in earth which is rich and full of water than that in earth which is poor and lack in water. iii. Relationship between temperature and the quality of nectar: Much nectar in high temperature, especially over 25 degrees centigrade, but little nectar in temperatures lower than 15 degrees centigrade. iv. Relationship between the climate of blooming periods and the quality of nectar: The windstorm and rain will influence the nectar flowing of locust directly. Therefore, the best place and time can be mastered only after the area of nectar plants, feature of climate, regular pattern and circumstance of nectar flowing in these years are considered carefully when we select the routes and places of migration. III. Applying a special set of tools. Beijing comb honey is a brand-new apicultural product which needs a set of scientific tools. A set of production tools have been worked out after years of experiments and improvement made by scientists, such as tailor-made comb honey frames, honey stoppers, nipping belts and transparent and nontoxic plastic honey boxes easy to be accepted by bees. The honey boxes, with beautiful shape of hexagon, round or square, made of plastics, with two box bottoms facing each other fixed on the frames according to bionic principles easy to be accepted by bees, can be mass produced after models. Such comb frames, which have similar outer length and height to ordinary comb frames with twice the width of that of honey boxes have been made according to the biological characteristics and the thickness of honey boxes. When empty honey boxes are arranged tidily in the comb frames, tightly instead of loosely with a wood stopper, bees will incubate as they deal with ordinary brood combs. IV. Choose good production environment where the use of antibiotics and pesticide is not permitted. Because comb honey is a natural green food, the selected area of honey-production must be large with a steady flow of nectar in years, a beautiful environment and fresh air, far from industrial areas without pollution and a reliable supply of water. In disease prevention and treatment for bee colonies, medicines that will cause pollution to comb honey are forbidden, such as antibiotics and pesticide. V. Production technology of absolutely natural comb honey. Bees are able to produce 100% pure natural honey by establishing a conditioned reflex mechanism after repeated training and using biological engineering technology.

4 VI. Technology wax-moth larva prevention and control. Comb honey is easy to be affected by wax-moth larva because of beeswax inside which is the favorite food for wax-moth larva. The technology has bee solved through biological methods. VIII. Technology of preventing honey color changing because of long storage. By using lightcolored nectar resources, adjusting temperatures, reagent protecting and other chemical and physical methods, the color-changing and color-deepening problems have been basically resolved, ensuring the non-distinctive color increase within the guarantee period of two years. Note: Since the technology is a patented one, details concerning it are understated.
