Overview: The division also coordinates different players and actors in beekeeping sector Actors and Players include Training and Research Institutions Private sectors beekeeping enterprises NGOs working in beekeeping related activities

2. TANZANIA FOREST SERVICES (TFS) AGENCY Established according to GN No. 269 of 30/7/2010 Responsible (just a few): implementation Establish and managing central government natural forest and bee reserves (34.5%), forest plantations and apiaries. Managing forest and bee resources in general land. Marketing forest and bee products and services. 6

Overview: Forest area is covering about 48.1 million hectares, representing 53% of the total country surface area which is 945,203 sq. km (aprox.94.5 mil ha.). All forest areas are ideal for beekeeping Out of 48.1million hectares of forests 39,811ha. are bee reserves (37,794.1ha. village bee reserves; ha. - national bee reserves).

Overview: Honey and beeswax are the primary products of beekeeping in Tanzania. Other products such as bee venom, propolis, pollen and royal jelly are not harvested due to limited technology. Little propolis is harvested and used as raw material for cosmetics that are produced in small scale.

2: Status of Beekeeping in Tanzania The number of beekeepers in the country cannot be said with certainty. It is estimated to be one million beekeepers. Over 90% are using bark and log hives, characterized with low productivity (7 kg/hive). Less than 10% are using top bar or frame hives (10 kg/hive).

Status cont Production of honey and beeswax is low compared with potential areas suitable for beekeeping (Only 13.8% is tapped out of the production capacity). Production potential is estimated at 138,000 metric tons (19,000 annually) of honey and 9,200 metric tons of beeswax per year (700 annually).

Status cont.. Beekeeping Training Institute Tabora (established since 1978) offers certificate and diploma courses Enrolment capacity is 160 Recently, the University of Dar es Salaam introduced a degree program in beekeeping (BSc. in Beekeeping Science and Technology) For the academic year 2015/2016 the first enrolment was 54 students

Status cont.. Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI) is carrying out bees and beekeeping research From nine (9) research activities have been conducted The beekeeping laboratory is under construction to foster quality and safety of bee products and promotion of products and services Universities such as SUA and UDSM have conducted several research to support the sector growth Output concept of beekeeping as income generating activity in conservation initiatives has been adopted

Status cont.. The sector has supported beekeepers stakeholder to formulate its national beekeeping umbrella Tanzania Beekeeping Development Organization which is now organizing its institutional arrangements The Organization was formed by 9 beekeeping corporate bodies in 2015) The country is supporting beekeepers to participate in local and international fora to expose them and enable to market their products. (2 Apimondia congress and 2 Symposia; Apitrade Africa since 2009, Juakali exhibition 2 times)

3. Stakeholder and Actors Govt collaborate with development partners to implement projects and programmes: BTC - beekeeping improvement in Kigoma MFA Finland beekeeping in CBFM areas and NFBKP World Bank LVEMP II beekeeping activities to adjacent communities around lake Victoria water basin (14 groups supported) WWF supported 285 beekeepers in Kilwa and Mafia Districts on capacity building Government Institutions i.e., Tanzania Bureau of Standards, Tanzania Food and Drugs Authority, Tropical Pesticides Research Institute, Chief Government Chemist Laboratory Agency provide technical and specification for bee products processing and handling.

Stakeholder and Actors cont.. GS1 is providing bar codes to processors and beekeepers. Tanzania Trade Development Authority (TanTrade) is organizing trade fairs each year. Beekeepers have access to display their products. Tanzania Agricultural Society coordinates agricultural exhibition in every August, beekeepers also do participate (19 clusters participated during 2016 Nanenane, 116,287 people visited MNRTs pavilion).

Status cont.. Honey displays during 2016 Nanenane exhibitions in Dodoma

Status cont.. Trainings on queen rearing and colony management to beekeeping staff and beekeepers. Some have managed to stock bee colonies (Singida Youth Entrpreneurs at Kisaki Village). Research based on bee health has bee conducted in collaboration with International Bee health expert from Germany. In samples collected no signs of bee diseases seen, There is a presence of mites and wax moth effect due to management and size of hives.

Export is normally in drums or container of 30kg capacity. The main buyers of Tanzania s honey: EU, Oman, UAE, Kenya, Rwanda, Uganda and Iran. 4. Market Access and Marketing Average export of honey and beeswax in past five years was 156 and 307 metric tons, respectively. Export of honey and beeswax is done by Private Sector.

Trend: Honey and Beeswax Exports five years Year Honey Beeswax Metric Tons Value (US$) Metric Tons Value(US$) 2011/ , ,473, / , ,520, / , ,201, / , ,227, / , ,451,446 Main buyers of beeswax: Japan, USA, and Germany.

Market access. More than half of honey produced in the country is consumed locally. The prices in the rural areas, range from USD 1.5 to 2.5 per kg. In cities, range from USD 4 to 7 per kg Honey can now be sold in supermarkets and hotels in containers ranging from 250gm to 1kg. (individually or into groups).

Market access. The Government is promoting establishment of collection centres. Govt. apiaries at district levels to demonstrate production and quality assurance.

5. CHALLENGES Low hive productivity. Lack of functional beekeeping database. Limited research in bees and beekeeping. Prolonged drought and wild fire incidences. Bee pests and predators. Lack of initial capital for smallholder beekeepers.

6. CONCLUSION/Way forward Introduce incentive scheme for forest adjacent communities and beekeepers associations. Improve production -using modern hives. Set standards for beekeeping equipment and facilities at all levels (quality). Establish and support incubators for beekeeping graduates and entrepreneurs
