MAN AND THE BIOSPHERE PROGRAMME (MAB) AN OVERVIEW Noëline Raondry Rakotoarisoa Programme Specialist UNESCO Regional Office for Science and Technology in Africa Nairobi

MAB IN THEORY MAB is UNESCO scientific intergovernmental programme MAB aims at reconciling the needs for rational use of the resources of the biosphere and the needs for conservation of genetic resources in ecosystems.

MAB IN THEORY UNESCO Man And Biosphere programme deals with one of the most important question the World faces today : «How can we reconcile conservation of biodiversity and biological resources with their sustainable use?»

MAB IN PRACTICE Biosphere Reserves are sites where the MAB objective and responses to the previous question is tested, refined, applied and disseminated. Biosphere reserves are so named in order to reflect their origin in the programme on Man and the Biosphere.

PROGRAMME MILESTONES : 1970: preparation of the programme and adoption by the UNESCO General Conference (1970); 1974: Biosphere reserves concept is defined by a MAB working group 1976: designation of first Biosphere reserve under the MAB programme 1995: Seville Conference ; Strategy and statutory framework approved by UNESCO Gen. Conf.

PROGRAMME MILESTONES III rd World Congress of Biosphere Reserves, Madrid, Spain, February 2008

PROGRAMME PRINCIPLES UNESCO deploys its action in the fields of Education, Natural Sciences, Social and Human Sciences, Culture, Communication and Information By taking advantage of this mandate and the inherent intersectoriality, interdisciplinarity and interculturality of the organisation

PROGRAMME PRINCIPLES w scientific research and information gathering, as well as linking with traditional knowledge on resource use. w involvement of local communities concerned with conservation and sustainable use of natural resources. w Cultural aspects are also taken into consideration

PROGRAMME PRINCIPLES UNESCO s intergovernmental structure gives MAB the potential to help national governments support the planning and implementation of research and training programmes. MAB operates through about 160 MAB National Committees and focal points for MAB activities. MAB National Committees involve various research institutions and administrations.

BIOSPHERE RESERVES w Biosphere reserves are areas of terrestrial and coastal ecosystems promoting solutions to reconcile the conservation of biodiversity with its sustainable use. ware nominated by national governments and designated by UNESCO w remain under the sovereign jurisdiction of the countries in which they are situated.

BIOSPHERE RESERVES Biosphere reserves are areas dedicated to fulfilling three complementary functions: Conservation and sustainable use of ecosystems, species and genetic resources; Fostering economic and human development; and Supporting the use of education and training, monitoring and other interventions to establish and sustain context specific relationships between conservation and development

Biosphere reserves perform three main roles: Conservation Development 1.Conservation in situ of natural and semi natural ecosystem and landscapes 2.Demonstration areas for ecologically and socio-culturally sustainable use; and Logistical support 3.Logistic support for reseach, monitoring, education, training and information exchange
