3 Fashion Institute of Technology Office of Environmental Health and Safety Compliance Revision: Third Dated 4/8/14 Guideline for FIT Standard Spill Kit for Limited Quantity Spill Response in Labs and Studios REQUIREMENTS In all cases, faculty and staff shall follow the requirements listed in the FIT Emergency Response Guide. This FIT Emergency Response Guide supersedes the any guidance listed below. Faculty and staff are not obliged to cleanup a chemical in a lab or studio. Faculty and staff may contact FIT Security and request assistance with the cleanup of any chemical spill that occurs in a lab or studio. The intent of this guideline is to allow faculty and staff that have completed annual FIT either Hazard Communication/Right-to-Know training or other training that the Occupational Safety and Health recognizes to respond to Limited Quantity spills (that is, attempt to contain, confine, or recover a chemical spill). DEFINITIONS Limited Quantity spill means spills or releases where a Material/Safety Data Sheet is on hand and less than one (1) quart for commercially available products and less than one (1) Pint of a pure chemical substance or flammable liquid. Limited quantity spills are not reportable to FIT Security. Cleanup of a Limited quantity spill usually take less than ten (10) minutes. BASIC SPILL RESPONSE PROCEDURE This kit provides faculty and staff with personnel protective equipment and absorbents that can contain or confine limited amounts of spilled materials. The use of these supplies is generally restricted to spills of less than one (1) quart for commercially available products and less than one (1) pint of a pure chemical substance or flammable liquid. Cleanup should be completed within ten (10) minutes. Description of Standard Spill Kit Contents Review the attachment Contents of FIT Standard Spill Kit for Limited Quantity Spill Response in Labs and Studios. The following describes the use of some of the contents. Contact Office of EHS Compliance for more information. 3

4 The contents of the kit may be used as supplies for response to small drips and overfills of chemical products as part of housekeeping or accidental spills of a limited quantity. This kit also provides bags to contain limited amounts spill cleanup debris that is recovered following spill removal and adhesive labels to identify the contents for disposal. This kit does not contain any solvents to clean spill affected areas to remove spill residues or neutralize spilled chemicals. The use of solvents is generally restricted to the use of limited amounts of waterbased detergent cleaners that are sparingly applied to spill affected areas. The kit provides forms to report and document limited spill incidents that may occur in a lab or studio. This spill kit provides spill response equipment that is used in three (3) ways. Spill containment to prevent the spread of a spilled material. This usually consists of surrounding the spilled material with spill socks or dikes to prevent movement. Spill confinement to cover spilled materials to prevent contact with spilled material or prevent release of potentially hazardous fumes or vapors. Recovery is the containment/bagging of spill cleanup debris and marking the container to show the container s contents. Note: If the substance is in a powder or dry form carefully brush the chemical off, DO NOT USE WATER. Personal Protective Equipment ANSI Protective Eyewear- Spectacles provide limited protection against splashes and struck by hazards from flying particles. Disposable Nitrile gloves Provide at least ten (10) minutes of protection from chemicals found in FIT labs or studios. DO NOT USE Disposable Nitrile gloves for Concentrated Nitric Acid. Use Coated Neoprene gloves (Not in standard kit) for Concentrated Nitric Acid spills. Site Scene Safety In case of a spill of any amount use Caution tape to isolate the spill area and keep unauthorized personnel away from spill area. The kit contains Caution tape, scissors, and tape to secure tape, as needed. Use of Adsorbents Universal spill pads green colored 16-inches by 16-inches and 12-inches by 12-inches white colored pads will absorb water based chemical spills. Generally used to confine and recover spill materials. 4

5 Polypropylene Pads white colored 16-inches by 16-inches will absorb oil based spills such as paint thinners (such as turpinoid) and oils. These pads will not absorb water based chemicals, acids, or bases. Generally used to confine and recover spill materials. Disposal of Spill Cleanup Debris Place cleanup debris such as, spill socks and pads from accidental limited quantity spills in plastic garbage bags and label either as Non Hazardous Waste or as Hazardous Waste as appropriate. Send Request for Chemical Removal form to Office of EHS Compliance to schedule waste removal. Debris from response to small drips and overfills of chemical products as part of housekeeping may be discarded with similar type of lab or studio waste. Recordkeeping Recording of Limited Quantity Spills Record the date of any accidental spill in the Non-reportable Spill Log. Include the type of material spilled, the type and amount of spill cleanup supplies used as part of cleanup. Do not record the use of spill cleanup supplies used as part Housekeeping/Maintenance Cleanup. RESTOCKING OF SPILL KITS Complete the Restocking form to obtain supplies. Submit the form to Office of EHS Compliance via Inner Office Mail or by Fax (212)
