It is flexible enough to use for both venous or capillary samples. Unlike other haematology systems, when performing a finger puncture you can use the QBC STAR tube a s t h e s i n g l e v e h i c l e for collection and analysis. The dry reagents contained in the QBC STAR tube facilitates testing and analysis - safely, accurately and without the liquid reagents and the liquid biohazard waste of impedance systems. The clinician simply fills the safety tube with the patient s blood sample and places it in the instrument. After analysis, the QBC STAR system displays nine clinically significant parameters, both on the LCD screen and on a hard copy printout for your records. 10 The QBC Malaria Paralens System Features of the QBC Malarial Parasite Detection System Fast, accurate detection and quantification of malarial parasites in capillary and venous blood. Accurate species identification, including filaria in blood. Converts any conventional laboratory microscope into a low cost fluorescent microscope. Quantifies the level of parasitaemia. Identifies the need for, and the most appropriate treatment. Can be used in the laboratory or the field. Paralens assembly: Microscope adapter is a costeffective alternative to fluorescent microscopes. Focusing lens - passes white light from illuminator to the excitation filter. Excitation filter - passes light in the mm wavelength while eliminating other wavelengths for optimum fluorescence Dichroic bean splitter - reflects excitation radiation downward with high efficiency. Fluorescence emitted from the specimen is almost entirely transmitted upward. 60x oil immersion lens - for optimum mix of concentration and clarity. Barrier filter - supresses residual radiation, assures that only safe, visible fluorescence reached the eyes of the microscope operator. 11 Method: µl of blood is taken in a QBC tube coated with Acridine Orange, and centrifuged for 5 minutes. When viewed under a fluorescence microscope, the malaria parasites are seen concentrated, shining in the background of dark Red Blood Cells. Diagnosis: All Plasmodium species are identified and quantified by the QBC system; Species differentiation is possible, enabling the Doctor to administer the right type of medication. Sensitivity: The high volume of blood, the concentration of the parasites by centrifugation and the fluorescent staining of parasites, make this the most sensitive test available for the diagnosis of malaria. Unparalleled sensitivity, of 1 parasite in 2 µl, is possible, compared with parasites per µl for a Thick Film. The loss of parasites can be up to 40% in conventional methods, whereas there is no loss of parasites in the processing of the QBC tube. Up to 18% more positives are reported by QBC than the conventional Thick Film method. 11
