2 Deploying 3D CAD doesn t solve all problems. Companies continue to create and distribute drawings - and when drawings are the master reference, there are always errors. Errors lead to delays and higher costs. 3D Master is a solution that has been proven to reduce costs significantly by driving accuracy throughout the entire product creation process! When the whole product, including all Functional Tolerancing and Annotation (FT&A) is defined in 3D, the potential for errors is reduced. Engineers can take advantage of a single-source of truth, providing constantly accurate information. Using FT&A in a 3D context is more intuitive than it is in a 2D drawing. By using the 3D Master method, all production-related information, such as geometry information, production and support details and information about change management are stored in the 3D model. In CATIA, this is typically done with FT&A elements, material information, attributes and parameters for the metadata. In order to leverage 3D Master strategies, you would like to ensure the verification of those information regarding existence, correctness and consistence throughout model revisions. 3 What is a modelling standard and which is the right one? A modelling standard is a set of rules that explains how to: Set up CAD files Create CAD geometry Author FT&A (or 3D annotation and attributes) for parts and assemblies There is not one single modeling standard for all industries. It depends on company specific products, tools, processes, customers and so on. There are two main options for available standards. Either using modeling standards of your customer to meet his requirements or set up your own modeling standard at your company. In general, establish your way, no matter which - any consistent method is better than none at all. 4 Easy identification of changes between model revisions In the product development process, design data evolve successively from the first draft to final components and assemblies. Within this overall process, not only shape changes are performed. Also metadata and 3D annotations which are very crucial for the 3D master process are added, removed or modified. Many new revisions are created and ideally all feature and geometry changes have been documented. Changes need to be clearly communicated between all parties, such as colleagues or external partners. Especially for downstream processes, changes must be documented to reduce effort and the potential for mistakes. In reality, a lot of challenges in the validation process prevent engineers from doing so because of: Different process knowledge Cultural differences Increased model complexity Language barriers Number of revisions No time Missing tools for validation Do my models meet the minimum quality and methodology requirements? What has recently been added or modified in models I work on? Have suppliers modified models from the last interchanged release, and what? Consequently, today still a large variety of questions have to be answered. When a model is changed, it is not sufficient to document geometrical changes. For a 3D Master Process all information including FT&A are essential. Model comparison with xcompare captures all differences in geometry and metadata and ensures that no modification remains undocumented.
