2 Warranty statement YD05 is made of high quality materials and under warranty for free of defects in material and workmanship under service and normal use conditions for a duration of 13 months by Yapidestek Ltd. The warranty would be VOID if any signs of improper installation, tampering, misuse, excessive heat, water, high voltage etc are observed. There are no warranties for people, equipment, or other direct or indirect losses and total warranty is limited by the initial cost of the sensor. Yapidestek is will not reimburse any possible loss incurred in removing or reinstalling and for data lost during the time in between. Caution Please read the installation guide carefully before installing the YD05 product. 1. Maximum allowable strain is 3000 µε. 2. Max supply voltage = 4 volts 3. Don t immerse in water 4. The maximum axial force on anchors should be limited to 30 N. 5. Don t pull wire with force, it can damage connections. 6. Avoid bending the gage along any axis. 7. Avoid twisting of gage during tightening or loosening. Installation instructions YD05 is made of rust free steel material, designed and optimized for monitoring of historical structures. Gages are temperature compensated and provide high precision readings. Please follow the installation steps as follows: 1) Make sure the seal is not broken and gage inside has no major bent or twist. 2) After removing the gage, check the resistance between the terminals; the resistance between (Brown & Yellow) pair and (White & Green) pair should be around 120 Ω and resistance between all other cables should be 90 Ω. Do not install the gage if the readings are much different than those values. Page 2

3 3) The base installation has two options, either a) use the glue on footings or b) m6 mechanical anchors for fastening the gage. The footings are specifically designed to use the strain gage on historic masonry structures, where drilling should be avoided to damage historic heritage. The footings have about 25 mm 25 mm base area where a safe load of 70 N can be transmitted by about 1 MPa compressive strength mortar, since some bending related tension and shear are combined. This mortar may be safely removed from the footing base after the gage is removed. Alternatively, the M6 mechanical anchor provided in the installation box can be used to install the gage on stone, mortar, or concrete material. Installation on concrete should be careful to avoid possible rebars inside the concrete that can be detected using Ferroscan or Profometer like instruments. Installation on steel structures may also be carried out using the metal footings by means of epoxy. The YD05 strain gage is specifically designed to have low axial stiffness, so that it can be used by weakly attached footings or delicate surface where the material strength has depreciated. For extremely low strength materials, use of mechanical anchors may be preferred. 4) If mechanical anchors will be used, drill two holes that are 155 mm apart from each other. Small deviations in the order of a few millimeters may be compensated by the oval hole on one end of the gage. If metal on-surface footings will be used, use a mortar of about 1 MPa compressive strength and apply it on the surface. Let the mortar cure and gain strength before installing the gages. The mechanical anchors are usually ok to be used immediately after installation. If anchors are installed on very weak material, the material at the edges of the anchors may creep and crack sometime after installation. If such effect is suspected, check the stiffness of the mechanical anchors and see if they move if a moderate shaking is applied by hand (e.g. about N force). If the anchors are moving, mortar or epoxy may have to be used around the anchors or surface footing supports may have to be used. 5) After the footing or anchors are properly placed, start with the circular hole on one end of the gage. Then pass the oval hole over the other support. Secure the circular side by tightening the nut over it. Make sure the bolt tightening won t turn the gage by holding the gage from the side that you are tightening. Continue by tightening the other end with the nut again holding the gage making sure it won t turn or twist during tightening the bolt. 6) Use #22 AWG 7 wire strand cables for extension similar to the one shown below, where each pair has separate shielding. Provide proper connection for the extension cable. 7) Connect the brown (+) and yellow (-) cables to the power input (excitation) to the sensor with about 2.5 Volts (for a maximum of 4 Volts). Connect the White (+) and Green (-) cables for output in the data logger. The sensors have about 500 /mv/v sensitivity and each calibration value is provided on the gage and data sheets. 500 /mv/v means if the sensor is excited using 1 V input and reads 1 mv output, it corresponds to 500 strain. If the input excitation is 2 Volts, then the same 500 strain would yield 2 mv output. If excitation is 2.5 Volts, then the sensor will have a calibration factor of 1250 /mv. Please use the calibration coefficient provided on the gage and calibration sheet for each gage separately. Page 3
