Premium Electric Underfloor Heating Mat Installation Instructions IMPORTANT SAFEGUARDS WHEN USING ANY ELECTRICAL APPLIANCE, BASIC SAFETY PRECAUTIONS SHOULD ALWAYS BE FOLLOWED. PLEASE READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY AND RETAIN FOR FUTURE REFERENCE. IF IN ANY DOUBT ABOUT THE INSTALLATION OR USE OF THIS PRODUCT, CONSULT A COMPETENT ELECTRICIAN.
Heatstore electric underfloor heat mats provide a comfortable, efficient form of heating under a wide range of floor finishes. Important Information - Please read before you proceed The information contained in these installation instructions must be read carefully before any attempt to install the underfloor heating. Failure to accurately follow these instructions may result in the incorrect operation of the product, damage to property and/or personal injury. Heatstore will not be held liable for any damage to property or personal injury as a result of failure to comply with the instructions contained herein. All electrical and repair work must be carried out by a qualified electrician in accordance with current UK IEE regulations and any local codes or regulations. Isolate power to the circuit before installation or maintenance. Ensure the underfloor heating circuit is protected by a suitably rated RCD. Do not cut or shorten the heating cable. Shortening the heating cable will increase it s resistance and will cause it to overheat and fail. 100% of the heating cable and the cold tail connection point must be embedded in tile adhesive and/or self levelling compound. When installing tiles, use a full bed of tile adhesive to cover the heating cables. Air gaps can cause the heating cable to burn out due to poor heat conduction. All tile adhesives and levelling compounds must be suitable for use with electric underfloor heating. Please check the manufacturer s instructions. Always check with your floor finish manufacturer to ensure suitability for use with electric underfloor heating. It is the installer s responsibility to test the underfloor heating mat before, during and after installation and provide the end user with a copy of the test results to use for warranty registration. Remove any protective film and/or packaging before installing your underfloor heating system. Ensure the sub-floor is dust free, level and solid before installing underfloor heating. Do not allow heating cables to touch or cross. Observe minimum 50mm spacing between heating cables to avoid over heating. 2

Install insulation boards on a concrete substrate Ensure the sub-floor is dust free, level and solid before installing underfloor heating. Insulation board will increase efficiency and reduce heat up times resulting in a better user experience. For a concrete substrate use Uncoated Insulation Board 1 2 Cut boards to size using wood saw or sharp blade making installation quick and easy. Apply a layer of flexible adhesive to the substrate using a notched trowel. Lay boards directly on to the adhesive taking care to ensure full adhesion. Check adhesive manufacturer guidelines for adhesive drying times. At only 10.5mm, uncoated insulation board presents a minimal height increase and is ideally suited for refurbishment projects. We recommend the use of a flexible cement based, polymer reinforced tile adhesive to adhere uncoated insulation board to a concrete substrate. Your supplier will be able to advise and provide this. Follow the adhesive manufacturer s guidelines for priming, mixing and application. Our insulation board is manufactured without the use of CFC or HCFC blowing agents. It is also environmentally friendly with zero Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP), is fully recyclable and reduces your energy costs. Our insulation board on it s own will not satisfy current insulation requirements, but when used will significantly improve underfloor heating efficiency. Do not install insulation boards over the top of an underfloor heating system! 4
Install insulation boards on a timber substrate Ensure the sub-floor is dust free, level and solid before installing underfloor heating. Insulation board will increase efficiency and reduce heat up times resulting in a better user experience. For a timber/ply substrate use Coated Insulation Board 1 2 Lay boards directly onto the timber substrate. Fix in place using suitable screws and fixing washers at 300mm centres. Take care to avoid any pipes or electric cables that may be under the floor! Consider using coated insulation boards in conjunction with a tanking system to create a sealed wetroom. Use coated insulation boards for structural or floor stiffening, walls and waterproofing applications. 5
Floor sensor & conduit Monitoring your underfloor heating system using the floor sensor provided with your thermostat (supplied separately) will provide the most efficient underfloor heating system. Floor sensor installation The floor sensor probe and conduit are included in the box with your thermostat (Thermostat supplied separately). Chase a channel into the floor and/or insulation board, taking care to make sure the floor sensor is positioned between 2 runs of heating cable and away from any other temperature influences such as large glazed elevations or heating/hot water pipes. The end of the temperature sensor should be placed approximately 40cm from the wall. Run the conduit down the wall and into the channel in the floor. Push the floor sensor cable right to the end of the conduit and secure in place within the electrical back box. The cold tail from the heating mat can be run up the wall to the thermostat position at this time. Sensor conduit & cold tail cable in wall cavity. Sensor conduit in floor channel, between heating cables, 40cm from the wall. 6
Important things to remember Do not cut or shorten the heating wire. Doing so will shorten it s resistance causing it to overheat and eventually burn out. Any heating wire that has been cut or shortened will not be covered under the Heatstore Lifetime Warranty. Each system should be tested with a multimeter before it is unpacked to ensure it is in full working order. Complete the enclosed Warranty Registration Form as your customer will need it in order to complete the warranty registration process with Heatstore. It is recommended that you draw a plan of your floor on page 11 to show how the mat fits the available floor space. Leave a copy of this drawing with your customer for future reference. Multiple underfloor heating mats can be installed in one room, on one thermostat. Multiple mats must be connected in parallel and the maximum load of the thermostat must not be exceeded. All tile adhesive, self levelling compounds and grout used must be suitable for use with underfloor heating. Single part, cement based, polymer reinforced, flexible tile adhesive is recommended. Check with the manufacturer if you are unsure. Your tile adhesive manufacturer may require the use of a primer before laying tiles. Check with your tile adhesive manufacturer for guidelines. The heating cable can be carefully removed from mesh and taped down to the floor in awkward or small areas where the matting will not fit. The heating cable can be secured to the substrate using a hot glue gun or tape. Tiles Simply tile directly over Heatstore UFH using a flexible cement based polymer reinforced tile adhesive* Carpet / Vinyl Cover Heatstore UFH with a 10mm layer of self levelling compound before laying carpet, vinyl or laminate flooring* *Always check with your floor finish manufacturer to ensure suitability for use with electric underfloor heating systems. 7
Laying the UFH mat Ensure the sub-floor is dust free, level and solid before installation. Roll out the matting over the prepared substrate until you reach the wall or an obstacle. Leave at least a 50mm space between the matting and the wall. DO NOT CUT THE HEATING WIRE! Carefully cut the mesh taking extra care to avoid cutting the yellow heating cable. Now turn the mat and continue to roll out parallel to the first run. Cut and repeat runs until the desired floor area is covered. Use the guide on page 9 to help you lay out the mat. Once in position use the self adhesive backing to fix the mat to the floor. Depending on your chosen floor finish, cover with a 10mm layer of suitable flexible self levelling compound or tile directly over the heating mat. When tiling, use a full bed of tile adhesive to prevent air gaps and ensure efficient heat transfer. 8
Mat layout options 90 O turn DO NOT CUT THE HEATING WIRE! Step 1 Cut mesh Step 2 Flip mesh Step 3 Turn through 90º and roll Roll out your underfloor heating mat, and when you get to an obstacle or the end of the room, simply cut the mesh and turn through 90 O and continue. 180 O turn DO NOT CUT THE HEATING WIRE! Step 1 Cut mesh Step 2 Turn through 180º Step 3 Continue rolling and repeat Cut the mesh and turn through any angle up to 180 O and continue rolling out until the desired floor area is covered. Cable can be released from the matting to cover smaller, more awkward areas. 9
Wiring instructions This wiring diagram is provided as a guide only. It is the electrician s responsibility to ensure the circuit is safe and adequately protected. Please see your thermostat (supplied separately) installation guide for detailed connection instructions and wiring diagrams. All electrical and repair work must be carried out by a qualified electrician in accordance with current UK IEE regulations and any local codes or regulations. Electrical installation work in dwellings is subject to building regulations Part P. The electric circuit must be protected by a suitably rated RCD. Isolate power to the circuit before installation or maintenance. Check that the total load of your underfloor heating system does not exceed the maximum load capability of the thermostat. Heatstore thermostats are floor sensing so can be positioned anywhere within 3m of the system, subject to current electrical regulations.
