Answer all questions (1X12=12 Marks) a) State the Castigliano s first theorem. b) Write the application of Maxwell-Betti s law. c) Is Castigliano s theorem is used for finding deflection of beams carrying bending moments as well as axial loads give an example. d) State the uses of influence line diagram. e) A simply supported girder has a span of 12m. A 200KN wheel load moves from one end to the other end on span of the girder. Find the maximum bending moment which can occur at a section 4m from the left end. f) Find the absolute maximum bending moment of a simply supported beam having a uniformly distributed load over the entire length of beam. g) What do you mean by rotational effect in fixed beam? h) Write the Clapeyron s equation for a simply supported beam having U.D.L throughout its length. i) Write the advantage of propped end in a propped cantilever beam with respect to cantilever beam. j) Write the advantages of statically indeterminate beams. k) Find out the strain energy stored by cantilever beam having a point load at its free end. l) What is meant by lack of fit in a truss? 2. Find the vertical deflection of the joint D of frame shown in Fig-1. All members have the same cross-sectional area A. The diagonal members are at 45 0 with the horizontal. 3. Find the deflection at D of a given square beam of width 300mm as shown in Fig-2 having a point load of 50KN at D. Take E= x 10 5 N/mm 2 I 4. Calculate maximum shear force, bending and absolute bending moment for the given system of loads moving from left to right on a girder of span 10m as shown in Fig-3.

A rectangular beam 250mm x 450mm is simply supported over a span of 5m. It is provided with a 4#25mm dia bars as tension reinforcement. Calculate the maximum stresses developed in steel and concrete, if the beam carries an udl of 12kN/m including self weight. Adopt m=13 and effective cover= 50mm.Also find the maximum moment of resistance, use M20 and Fe415 HYSD bars.(use WSM) 2. The T-roof beams are spaced at 2.5m c/c and simply supported. The beams have an effective span of 5m and 300mm web width, with a depth of 600mm projecting below the slab. Determine the maximum udl that can be put safely on the T-beam without exceeding the allowable stresses 5 N/mm 2 and 140 N/mm 2 in concrete and steel respectively. Beams are reinforced with 4 bars of 25mm dia. at the bottom with an effective cover of 40mm. Take modular ratio 19 and slab thickness 100mm. (Use WSM) UNITII 3. A rectangular simply supported beam is subjected to a live load of 20KN/m over a span of 6m. The depth of the beam is restricted to 450mm. Design the section for flexure. Use M20 and Fe 415 steel. Use Limit State Method. 4. Determine the moment of resistance of a T beam with flange width 1200mm.web thickness 300mm, slab thickness 100mm, effective depth 450mm and area of tension steel 2946 mm 2. Assume M20 concrete and Fe415 steel reinforcement in limit state method. UNITIII 5. A cantilever RCC beam has an effective depth of 500mm and breadth of 350mm. It contains 4-25mm bars of Fe415 grade as tensile steel. Calculate shear reinforcement needed for a factored shear force of 350KN on span of 6meters.Consider M 20 concrete and Fe415 Steel 6. A rectangular cantilever beam of span 4m is 350mmx650mm in c/s. Bending moment at support due to UDL is 150KN-M out of which 50% moment is due to permanent loads. Calculate the total beam deflection. It carries 3-25mm.bars in tension at an effective cover of 50mm.Consider M 20 concrete and Fe415 Steel. UNITIV 7. Design a simply supported beam for the following data, Effective span 6m, Live load 20kN/m, the cross section of the beam is limited to 230mm x 450mm. Use Limit State Method. 8. Design a dog legged stair case for a public building using the following data, Stair case room size 3.6m x 6m (Clear). Floor height is 3.6m. Adopt M 25 concrete and Fe 415 steel. Assume any suitable data if needed. Use Limit State Method. UNITV 9. Design a square water tank having inner dimensions of 6mX6mX2.65m high with walls fixed at the bottom and free at top. The tank is directly supported on the earth. The floor slab is monolithic with the walls. The free board is 150mm. Use M20 concrete and Fe415 grade HYSD bars. Use working stress method. 10. Design a square underground water tank having inner dimensions of 5mX5mX3m depth. The net bearing capacity of earth is 100kN/m 2.The angle of repose of the soil is The density of soil is 18kN/m 3. Use M20 concrete and Fe415 grade HYSD bars. Use working stress method. Assume necessary data and prepare detailed drawings.
6 CE 314 First Semester Design of Steel Structures - I Use of IS: code and steel tables are permitted (5X12=60 Marks) 1. a) Mention the advantages and disadvantages of welded connections. 4M b) Design a connection to join two plates of size 250 x 12 mm of Fe410, to mobilize full tensile strength using shop fillet welds if (a) a lap joint is used (b) a double cover butt joint is used. 8M 2. a) Sketch the various patterns of riveted joints. 4M b) Calculate the strength of 20 mm diameter bolt of grade 4.6 for the following cases. The main plates to be joined are 12 mm thick. (i) Lap joint, (ii) Single cover butt joint, the cover plate being 10 mm thick, (iii) Double cover butt joint, each of the cover plate being 8 mm thick. 8M I 3. Determine the design tensile strength of the plate 200 mm X 12 mm with the holes for 16 mm diameter of 4 bolts. The width of the plate is 130 mm and the bolts are in two rows with a gauge distance of 60 mm and edge distance of 35 mm. The steel used is of Fe 410 grade quality. 4. Design a built up column of two channels placed toe to toe. The effective length of the column is 5 m. The column carries an axial load of 2000 KN. UNITIII 5. Design a simply supported plate rolled steel beam section to carry a uniformly distributed load of 50 KN/m inclusive of self weight. Effective span of the beam is 6m.The depth of the beam is not to exceed 450 mm. The compression flange of the beam is laterally supported 6. Design a two tier grillage foundation for a column carrying 2000 KN load. The size of base plate is 800 x 800 mm. Safe bearing capacity of the soil is 200 KN/m 2. V 7. Design a laterally unsupported beam for the following data: Effective span = 4m, Maximum bending moment = 550 KN-m, Maximum shear force = 200 KN, Both ends are restrained in rotation, Steel is of grade Fe Design a laterally unsupported beam of effective span 6m for the following datasteel is of grade Fe410, Maximum bending moment = 150 KN-m, Maximum shear force = 210 KN. Check for web buckling, webcrippling and deflection is not required. UNIT V 9. An ISLB N/m transmits an end reaction of 385 KN, under factored loads, to the web of ISMB N/m. Design a bolted framed connection. Steel is of grade Fe 410 and bolts are of grade Design a stiffened seat connection for an ISMB 350@514 N/m transmitting an end reaction of 320 KN due to factored loads to a column section ISHB N/m. The steel is of grade Fe 410 and bolts are of grade 4.6.
