1 Resources required for delivering L1 Diploma in Construction Multiskills Sizes and uses of buildings and other areas will vary across training centres. N.B. This document is divided into sections each relating to specific work activities required by applicable units:- Please If the following facilities are available for use in the relevant occupations and already exist within a centre then they may be utilised accordingly SECTION 1 Resources required for delivering the unit:- CSA-L20cc88 Develop Customer Relationships Facilities and resources required for this unit will be classrooms and recourse based learning area. Classroom The classroom will be equipped with standard classroom equipment to promote a learning environment: Overhead projector/powerpoint projector Projector screen Flipcharts/chalkboards/whiteboards/interactive whiteboard Stationery as required Props as required Desks and chairs as appropriate (one workstation to one student) Resource based learning area This may be a centre s library/specific area and will be equipped with resource material equipment to promote a learning environment for research using:- Technical literature Specific workbooks Trade journals/bulletins BSI Literature Computer workstations Internet access Continued. 1 Version 1.0
2 Materials and equipment Learners will require access to computer workstations and the internet Stationary materials Hard copy literature (e.g. technical, statutory, health and safety) SECTION 2 Resources required for delivering the units:- CSA-L10cc243 Construct Woodworking Joints. CSA-L10cc244 Fit Architrave and Skirting CSA-L10cc245 Fit Ironmongery to Internal Door Work areas Workshop having approximately 2.5m² floor space per trainee to allow for carpentry and joinery works to be carried out.(i.e internal and external woodwork) Ideally a roof clearance height of approximately 3.5-4m is recommended to allow for wood stud partitions to be erected. Area 2 Covered or part covered area of approximately 60m². Where covered the roof area should allow for structures with a height of 2.5m. Hand Tools Handsaws ripsaws, cross cut saw, tenon saw, dovetail saw, coping saw, hammers & mallets, planes (Jack, smoothing) spokeshave, wood chisels, boring tools, screwdrivers, cramps & holding devices, workbench holding devices, bradawls Measuring and Marking out equipment Rules, tapes, marking gauges, try squares, combination squares, scribing tools, mitre Other Workbenches for measuring and marking out, work holding and producing woodworking joints and components Fixings, nails, screws, brackets Ironmongery:- locks, latches, hinges, handles Door lining 100mmx28mm joinery grade Materials & Resources Sealants and adhesives 2 Version 1.0
3 Timber and timber based materials - Canadian Lumber Stock (CLS) or similar softwood planed on two or four sides (PAR) Other wood materials - Door Linings supplied and reusable 100mm x 28mm joinery grade Doors standard full size flush doors Mouldings architraving, skirting board joinery grade softwood Personal Protective Equipment Gloves, eye and ear protection, protective clothing, masks/respirators, barrier creams etc. Secure, covered areas (internal or external) with racking for storing timber materials Secure, dry and ventilated areas for storing lengths of timber, hand tools, portable power tools and hardware items, preferably integral to the workshop. Designated area for containers/skips, bags or other means of waste disposal. SECTION 3 Resources required for delivering the unit:- CSA-L10cc250 Plaster Walls Work area Workshop with area for demonstration, plastering and plasterboard work (approx. 50m²) and cubicles or rooms with wall and ceiling surfaces(background surfaces : solid, timber, plasterboard) with cubicles/areas incorporating door and window openings, recesses, piers etc. A roof clearance height of approximately 2.5m is recommended to allow for a variety of constructions to be errected, e.g. wood studding and metal channelling. Hard wall surfaces for plastering. Additionally Area of about 20m², preferably adjacent to the location, with water supply and storage, mixing area and wash down facilities and bays for mortars, materials and sands. 3 Version 1.0
4 Plasterers tools: Hand and power tools plus ancillary equipment for carrying out various practical tasks. Hawk/hand board, feather edges, floats for applying plaster, measuring tapes, spirit levels, straight edges, gauging trowel, screwdrivers. Mixing equipment: hand and power e.g. buckets, whisks. Materials & Resources Timber battens, timber/metal frame studding, bonding agents, sealants, plaster (backing and finishing coats) finishing plaster, standard size plasterboard sheets and wallboards. Personal Protective Equipment Gloves, eye and ear protection, protective clothing, protective footwear, high visibility clothing, masks/respirators, gloves, barrier creams etc. Secure, dry and ventilated stores for bagged materials e.g. renders, plasters, additives, plasterboard sheets, shovels; hand tools, power tools, e.g. whisks, access equipment. Designated area(s) for skips, bags or other means of waste disposal. SECTION 4 Resources required for delivering the unit:- CSA-L10cc248 Prepare Substrates for Painting and Decorating. CSA-L10cc246 Apply paint to Substrates. Work areas Workshop with area for demonstration and initial skills training including paint mixing and preparation and cubicles/rooms areas with wall and ceiling substrate surfaces suitable for painting/wallpapering. Cubicles/rooms to include flush doors, skirting, architraves etc., of various types for painting. 4 Version 1.0 Continued
5 Where possible, a proportion of cubicles/rooms to be high enough to require low level access equipment e.g. stepladders, platform steps, trestles and platform staging. Space norm of 5m². Area 2 Covered area of approximately 50m² with various wall surfaces provided by brick or block wailing straight and returned. Additionally Area for washing/cleaning brushes and equipment. Hand tools for painting and decorating tasks Filling knives, scrapers, shears/scissors, shave hooks, pallet knives, hammers, wire brushes, screw drivers, pliers, brush keeps. Hand tools for application of wall hanging Paper hanging brushes, trimming knives, buckets, paste tables, plum bobs, spirit levels, roller/edge rollers, paste brushes, hand trimmers, measuring tapes, rules Materials & Resources Appropriate and adequate supplies of Paint brushes, paint kettles, rollers and roller sleeves, abrading sheets, PADS for preparing substrates, buckets/pots Foundation and plain papers Paint and primers acrylic, waterborne primers, undercoats, egg shells, glosses, emulsions Cleaning solvents e.g. white spirit, brush cleaners, turpentine substitute Surface filler, decorators caulk Glass papers and abrasives for preparing substrates Masking tape, masking paper Previously coated background surfaces for carrying out paper hanging Papers non matching or matching patterned vinyls Protective sheeting Personal Protective Equipment Gloves, eye protection, protective clothing, masks/respirators, barrier creams etc. 5 Version 1.0
6 Secure, dry, ventilated, enclosed stores for paints, painting tools and equipment, solvents etc., complying with current regulations for the storage of flammable, toxic items and external access. Secure storage for access equipment. Designated area for containers/skips, bags or other means of waste disposal. SECTION 5 Resources required for delivering the units:- CSA-L10cc240 Build a Block Wall CSA-L10cc241 Build a Brick Wall Work areas Workshop having approximately 3m² floor space per trainee. To enable forms of low level access to be erected, a roof clearance height of approximately 4m is recommended. Area 2 Covered or part-covered area of approximately 50m². To enable scaffold and other forms of access to be erected, a roof clearance height of approximately 6m is recommended. Additionally Area of about 20m², preferably adjacent to the Type 1 and Type 2 locations, for a mortar mill or mixer, with water supply and storage, mixing area and wash down facilities and bays for aggregates and sands. Appropriate and adequate supplies of : Measuring, marking and setting out equipment: - measuring tapes, spirit levels and straight edges, builders square, profile boards, ranging lines, pegs, automatic levels, staffs, gauging box (or equivalent), wheelbarrows, shovels, brushes/brooms Bricklayers tools: - trowels, chisels,hammers, pointing irons, lining pins, soft hand brushes, cavity wall ties 6 Version 1.0
7 Materials & Resources Appropriate and adequate supply of: - standard size common bricks, facing bricks, - lightweight blocks standard type - sand, lime mortar, water Personal Protective Equipment appropriate and adequate supplies of: gloves, eye and ear protection, protective clothing, masks/respirators, barrier creams etc. Secure, dry and ventilated stores for bagged materials e.g. cement, lime mortar, additives, shovels, hand tools etc. Part-covered secure area with racking for drainage goods, bricks, blocks, props, struts etc. Designated area(s) for skips, bags or other means of waste disposal. SECTION 6 Resources required for delivering the unit:- CSA-L10cc254 Tiling Walls. Work areas Workshop having approximately 2m² floor space per trainee. Suitable backgrounds to enable wall tiling to take place (e.g. timber, brick, block, plasterboard, backerboard) Additionally Area of about 12m² (which can be cumulative), preferably adjacent to the locations with water supply and storage, mixing area and wash down facilities and bays for aggregates and sands. Appropriate and adequate supplies of hand tools and ancillary equipment for carrying out various practical tasks: e.g. Measuring and setting out tools Background preparation tools Scribing, trimming, drilling and cutting tools Applying and spreading tools Bedding and finishing tools Buckets, brushes, shovels, cleaning materials 7 Version 1.0
8 Materials and resources Appropriate and Adequate supplies of Wall tiles (e.g. Ceramic or other available types) tile spacers Mortar mixes, adhesives, (training adhesives may be used), admixes, primers, Grout cement based Tile sealants Templates/objects for cutting tiles around e.g pipes, sockets etc. Personal Protective Equipment Appropriate and Adequate supplies of gloves,eye protection, protective clothing, masks/respirators, barrier creams etc. Secure, dry and ventilated stores for handling and moving bagged and contained materials e.g. sand, mortar, cement, plasters, adhesives, grouts, additives. Racking for storing tiles, grouts, adhesives, primers, admixes etc. Designated area(s) for skips, bags or other means of waste disposal. APPLICABLE TO ALL SECTIONS (except section 1) Designated area for containers/skips, bags or other means of waste disposal. Water supplies for use of mixing, washing down etc. Paved/solid mixing areas. Access and egress for deliveries and waste collections etc. PLEASE NOTE: each practical assignment for this qualification will outline further resource requirements. 8 Version 1.0
