TREX PRODUCT & INFORMATION GUIDE An Ounce of Prevention PRODUCT JOB SITE STORAGE & SAFETY Job Site Storage There are several important things to remember when storing Trex decking. Trex decking must be stored on a flat surface. Trex decking must be supported every 2 on center. When stacking Trex decking, supports should start at each end of the unit and line up vertically. Trex decking must be supported on a level plain. Adjust support blocks accordingly. Do not stack Trex higher than 6 units or 12 high. Safety Units of 12' Trex lumber on level ground. As with any construction project, you should wear the proper protective clothing and safety equipment. Trex decking is heavier and more flexible than wood. Do not try to lift similar quantities of Trex boards as you would traditional lumber. Units of 12' Trex lumber on uneven ground. 10

The Tools of the Trade Tools Intricate shapes, profiles and patterns are possible with Trex. No special tools are required. For best results, use carbide tipped blades and router bits. Fact: All colored chalk lines are permanent except white. We suggest using white chalk. Trex Company does not recommend sanding. Sanding will change the appearance of the surface of the Trex material. When using a miter box saw, we recommend a saw blade with 30 teeth or less. Screw guns provide a quick and easy way to fasten Trex. When drilling, periodically lift the bit out of the hole to remove the shavings. INSTALLATION TOOLS Trex routs beautifully to give extremely crisp edges. Do not rout 2x2 or 4x4 profiles. Trex does not recommend routing Trex Brasilia. Routing will change the unique surface of this product. For most Trex profiles, saw blades with fewer teeth (18 to 24, on a blade) stay cooler and last longer. When cutting Trex Artisan Series Railing, Trex recommends using 42-tooth carbidetipped blade B U Y - T R E X w w w. t r e x. c o m 11

TREX PRODUCT & INFORMATION GUIDE INSTALLATION FASTENERS Assemble with Care Fasteners Trex decking and railing systems can be assembled with most traditional outdoor fastening methods. Hot-dipped, galvanized, ceramic-coated, and stainless steel fasteners resist rust and stains. We recommend these five fastening options: Minimum Fastener Size Nails Tip: Screws Profile Length Gauge Length No. 5/ or 11d 2-1/2 #7 2 x or 11d 3 #7 Consult the supplier of the framing lumber for additional recommendations on fastener coatings as some wood preservatives can affect fastener life. These types of fasteners work well with Trex: Exterior grade deck screws Fewer threads per inch work best. You will need to flatten excess shavings after screw is in place. Composite decking screws These screws are designed to pull the shavings into the screw hole. If you want the screws to coordinate with Trex colors, you can use TrapEase * screws. Trim-head screws These screws have sufficient holding power and their small head decreases screw visibility. Hidden Fasteners There are several brands of hidden fastener systems that work well with Trex. Check with the manufacturer if you have questions about suitability. Nails Nails are also effective on Trex. Spiral shank nails have extra holding power. The minimum diameter nail recommended is 0.120" *Fastenmaster TrapEase is a registered trademark of Olympic Fasteners 12

A Strong Foundation Framing Fastening Tips for End to End on Joist The key to quality installation starts with the foundation and framing. Check your local building codes for restrictions. Trex material is not recommended for structural applications. Do not attach Trex decking directly to any solid surface or watertight system. systems on page 25. Special Patterns See sleeper When planning a unique pattern, you will need to adjust the framing to support the surface pattern. Please refer to the spanning chart on page 14. Many decks are designed to take advantage of angles, as in the herringbone design in Illustration #1. There are numerous creative layout options that will add value and visual appeal to the decking surface. For more advanced layout options, including bending and sunbursts, please see pages /8 3/ Trex does not have a linear grain like wood, and will not split if fasteners are started 1 from the board edges and angled into the joist. Pre-drilling will reduce the probability of splitting. Please see page 15 for gapping guidelines. Illustration #1 Herringbone pattern Illustration #2 Tile pattern Illustration #3 Picture Frame pattern An alternate installation is to add an additional joist band/nailer at the butt joint to provide greater fastening area. 16 TREX PRODUCT & INFORMATION GUIDE Code Compliance Joist Spanning for Decking Trex decking meets all applicable national model building codes. The joists must be spaced according to the chart below. Be sure that all joists are level and plumb. Trex decking must span at least three joists. Tip: 1. For load-bearing applications such as hot tubs, planters, etc. consult a local building engineer or inspector for span recommendations. 2. Paint the top of your joists black to minimize the appearance of joists through spaces between boards. See chart above. At a 60 angle, maximum joist spanning is 2 less than above chart. At a 45 angle, maximum joist spanning is 4 less than above chart. At a 30 angle, maximum joist spanning is 1/2 of the above chart. 14

Needed Space Gapping Trex decking must be gapped, both end-to-end and width-to-width. Gapping is necessary to facilitate proper drainage and for the slight thermal expansion and contraction of the Trex decking boards. Another reason for gapping is to account for shrinkage of the wood joist system. Following the proper gapping requirements will ensure that your deck will look great year after year. 1/4" 3/8 1/8" 3/16 1/4 1/2 Width-to-width The required width-to-width gapping is 1/4. When installing in temperatures below 40 F, 3/8 gapping is recommended. End-to-end Trex decking must also be gapped end-to-end, based upon the temperature at installation. See chart below. For fastening tips, see page 13. Abutting Solid Objects Trex decking must also be gapped 1/4 1/2 depending upon the temperature at installation when decking is abutting a wall. See chart below. INSTALLATION GAPPING Width to Width Gap Below 40 F* 3/8 Above 40 F* 1/4 *temperature at installation End to End & Abutting Gap End-to-End Abutting Below 60 F* 3/16 1/2 Above 60 F* 1/8 1/4 *temperature at installation Fact: Always follow Trex recommended gapping guidelines. Maximum allowable overhang for Trex is 4. All decks require air circulation to keep them dry and looking good. Leave openings under the decking or increase gapping to 3/8 to improve air flow. Trex used as vertical siding or fascia around the base of a deck must be gapped the same as decking to allow for air flow. Fascia should be attached with two screws every 18" B U Y - T R E X w w w. t r e x. c o m 15

TREX PRODUCT & INFORMATION GUIDE INSTALLATION STAIRWAYS Moving on Up Stairway Assembly Detail The majority of decking projects require the installation of stairs. Due to its lowmaintenance composition, Trex products are ideal for treads and risers. Heavy traffic areas will hold up for years. 2x6 Stair treads built with Trex 2x6 or 2x8 meet requirements set forth by the major national model building codes. Fasten treads continuously across at least 4 stringers. Maximum center to center distance between wood stringers is 12 (see the chart on page 14). Gapping between all Trex boards should be 1/4 in warm weather. Use 3/8 gap for cold weather installation (see the table on page 15). Dress the sides of the stringers with Trex 1x6, 1x8 or 1x12 for a finished look. A graspable handrail may be required on stairways. Check with your building code official for local requirements. See illustrations on page 20 for designer rail installation on stairway applications. 1x8 36 min. 4 stringers required Riser trim removed for clarity 12 max (see page 14). 16

Trex has all the components you need for the deck of your dreams. For railing component profiles, please see page 6. Trex Company offers three railing systems to accommodate your deck's design. Trex Designer Series Railing provides a higher level of design with its shaped top and bottom rails, giving a distinctive look without cutting or routing normally required. It is not only beautiful, but also easy to install with its unique TrexExpress Assembly Tool. This assembly system makes building with these components faster and easier. Align top and bottom rails. Insert all balusters for that section into the channel on the top rail. Use the Railing Assembly Tool to properly space each baluster in the top rail. When spacing the balusters, make sure that the distance from the end of the top rail and the first baluster are equal on both ends. Step 5 - Securing Balusters to Bottom Rail Place the bottom rail on its side, ensuring that the side with the lip is up. Slide the Railing Assembly Tool face up, adjacent to bottom rail. Using the marked distance that matches the first baluster on the top rail, place the baluster in contact with the lip of the bottom rail. Once in place, nail through the underside of the bottom rail into each baluster. If using screws, Trex Company recommends pre-drilling. (Hint: Groove in the bottom rail indicates the center location of the baluster for nailing.) For added stability, predrill center of balusters and attach balusters with screw. Step 6 - Securing Balusters to Handrail Align the bottom rail so it is the same distance from the first baluster as the top rail. Nail both sides of handrail for added stability. Using a nail gun, (2ʹʹ - 16 gauge nails) secure each baluster by inserting a nail through the lower side portion of the top rail into each baluster. Hold nail gun perpendicular to baluster to be sure the nail drives securely into the baluster. Step 7 - Attach Your Support Blocks Nail through the sides of the bottom rail into the support blocks (See image in Step 5). Support blocks are 4ʹʹ long and are required every 18ʹʹ. Step 8 - Securing Railing Section to Post Place the assembled railing section on the RSB s already secured to the posts. Using (2) screws provided, secure the top rail to the RSB s. Step 9a - Securing Bottom Rail to Post From the Top Secure the bottom rail by installing a screw through the top of the bottom rail into the outer-most hole of the RSB. OR Step 9b - Securing Bottom Rail to Post From the Side Using a nail gun (2ʹʹ - 16 gauge nails) at a 45 angle, place a nail from the bottom rail into the rail post. Position the nail 1 1 /4ʹʹ up from the bottom of the rail and 1ʹʹ in from the rail post. INSTALLATION TREX DESIGNER SERIES RAILING INSTRUCTIONS B U Y - T R E X w w w. t r e x. c o m 21

Rooftop & Sleeper Deck Systems Sleeper Deck Systems Trex is an ideal material for applications above solid surfaces as in a rooftop deck or on top of concrete or slate provided that your installation includes a sleeper system. A sleeper system is a buffer between the solid surface and Trex. Drainage, access and airflow are critical. Water must be able to flow away from the deck. Access is needed to the joist system for repairs and removal of debris when necessary. Good airflow will keep the decking dry and good-looking. Roof-deck notes: Consult your building code authority for proper detail on railing installation to the roof structure. If access to the roof is desired, the Trex deck must be built in removable sections or with removable fasteners to allow access to roof. The sleeper joists must be attached to the roof structure in a manner that stabilizes the deck frame. Failure to do so may result in a poor structure which will compromise deck performance. Sleeper system notes: Surface below the deck must be pitched for proper drainage. 1/4-1/2 gap abutting walls or other fixed objects. Gaps between deck boards shall be 3/8 minimum on a sleeper system. Minimum height of a sleeper joist is 3-1/2. Trex, when used with a sleeper system, must be supported below its entire length and run the direction of the pitch of the roof to facilitate proper drainage. 30 TREX PRODUCT & INFORMATION GUIDE SPECIAL APPLICATIONS BENDING DETAIL Don t Be Square Bending Detail Suggested methods for bending Trex : Trex boards can be bent without being heated when the outside temperature is above 80 F. Trex 5/4 x 6 or 2 x 4 boards, laying flat, can be bent to achieve a 20 foot radius when formed as in Illustration #1. To assist in the bending of Trex, you can use a non-flammable pipe/tube and a portable heater with fan to heat boards to approximately 140 F internal temperature. See Illustration #2. To achieve this temperature, heat boards a minimum of minutes. To minimize damage to the board surface near the heater, flip boards after 20 minutes or move heater to other end of the tube. Illustration #1 Suggested Methods for Bending Trex (without heating) for Decking at an ambient temperature of 80 F or higher Illustration #2 Non-Flammable Tube or Pipe & Portable Heater System Joist spans must be reduced to 12 inches to accommodate Trex installed in curved configurations. 28

Don t Be Square Bending Tips 1) Installing curved profiles will take considerably more time than installing straight profiles. Illustration #1 Bending Trex Decking 2) Heaters larger than 100,000BTU will require less time to heat Trex profiles. 3) Bending boards in this manner places them under considerable stress. Boards may break. The most common causes are: a. The boards are not hot enough b. Bending is being done at a rate faster than 1" per second 4) Railings need to be bent as in either Option #1, #2 or #3 as shown on the following page. 5) Attach fasteners only on inside of curve, until boards are bent entirely into place. Then fill in rest of the fasteners. 35 Caring for a Trex Deck All exterior building materials require cleaning. Periodic cleaning of Trex Decking & Railing will maintain the beauty of a Trex deck. Trex recommends a basic cleaning to remove dirt and debris at time of installation. PROBLEM Dirt and Debris Chalk Markings Visibile Mill Markings Water Spots/Leaf Staining/Wood Tannins Pigment Staining Ice and Snow Rust Stains, Ground-In Dirt and Grime Oil and Grease Stains Berries and Wine Stains Ink Stains Mold Pressure Washer Sanding Disposal SOLUTION Clean deck to remove dirt and debris. Soap, hot water and a stiff bristle brush are all that is needed. For Artisan products, general cleaning may be done with an orange citrus cleaner. For a tougher stain, use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser* in conjunction with an orange citrus cleaner. All colored chalk lines are permanent except white. Scrubbing the area with hot soapy water with bleach may dislodge some of the chalk. We suggest using white chalk or baby powder. The mill markings on the side of Trex decking boards are required by building codes. With careful installation, most mill markings can be hidden. Visible mill markings can be lightened with acetone. Tannin leaching occurs in Trex and all wood based products naturally. Allow for at least 12 weeks of normal weathering. This process may be hastened through the use of a product containing oxalic or phosphoric acid. During the weathering process, a small amount of surface pigmentation may wash off of the Trex surface, which may discolor neighboring surfaces. Remove with common rust cleaner. Calcium chloride or rock salt, available in many home centers, will melt ice on Trex decking. Rinse off when first practical. Use a cleaning product containing oxalic or phosphoric acid base to lighten or remove the rust or dirt. Product may need to sit on stain min. before rinsing. Scrub in a household-degreasing agent as soon as the stain occurs. Rinse with hot water. For more severe stains, call BUY-TREX. Mix bleach into hot water according to the bleach-packaging label. Scrub the stain lightly and rinse thoroughly. The stain may not disappear entirely. Inks may be permanent. However, the stain may be lightened by scrubbing with hot soapy water. Rinse thoroughly. Use conventional deck washes or cleaners that contain sodium hypochlorite (bleach) and detergent (refer to Mold Technical Bulletin). Treat with PSC Composite Deck AfterKlean ( or Anti-Growth ( to delay regrowth. Periodic cleaning of your deck, even if it appears clean, is important to prevent the build-up of pollen/debris that can cause mold. Trex Company does not recommend the use of a pressure washer. The use of a pressure washer with a greater than 1,500 PSI and/or applied closer than 10" from the deck surface could damage the decking surface and result in a loss of warranty coverage. Trex Company does not recommend sanding. Sanding will change the appearance of the surface of Trex material. Trex Artisan products should be disposed with normal construction debris or household waste. Do not burn Trex Artisan Products due to its material properties. 38 APPENDIX: A USAGE GUIDELINES Usage Guidelines Trex Wood-Polymer lumber is suitable for a wide range of uses such as decking, railing and landscaping.trex Wood-Polymer lumber is not intended for primary structural members such as load bearing columns, joists, stringers and beams. In most installations, a span of 16 on center using a minimum of 3 joists will provide excellent results. Please refer to the Trex Decking Span Chart for specific requirements or consult the Trex Wood-Polymer lumber building code listings (National Evaluation Service - NER-508 or ICBO ES ER-5747) or the Trex Wood-Polymer lumber evaluation reports (Canadian Construction Materials Centre CCMC R). IMPORTANT: Trex decking must always be installed properly gapped and directly on joists. Do not attach Trex decking to any solid surface or water tight system such as sheathing, waterproof membranes, concrete, roof systems, or patios. Getting Started As with any woodworking project, protective clothing and safety glasses should be worn. Handling Trex Wood-Polymer Lumber Trex Wood-Polymer lumber weighs more than wood and it's more flexible. Special care should be taken when handling. Do not attempt to lift similar volumes of Trex lumber as you do wood. When storing Trex Wood-Polymer lumber at the job site, be sure to place on a flat surface. When stacking units, supports should start at each end and be spaced 24 on center. Supports should line up vertically Units of 12' Trex lumber on level ground. Units of 12' Trex lumber on uneven ground. Cutting and Drilling Trex Wood-Polymer Lumber For best results, use carbide tipped blades and router bits. Trex Tip: Blades with fewer teeth (18-24 for 7 1/4 circular sawblade) work best. Trex Wood-Polymer lumber s workability is outstanding. Unlike wood, with Trex Wood-Polymer lumber you won't need to be concerned about grain direction or knots. When drilling large or deep holes, periodically lift the drill out of the hole to draw the shavings out. Nailing and Fastening Trex Wood-Polymer Lumber Hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel nails or screws are highly recommended to take full advantage of the durability of Trex Wood-Polymer lumber. Per Evaluation Report CCMC R, Trex Wood-Polymer lumber decking must be fastened to the wood joists with fasteners conforming with Article of the NBC The fasteners must have a corrosion protection coating or be made of stainless steel. The planks must be fastened with at least two fasteners per support, and the fasteners must be at least 76 mm long. Consult the supplier of the framing lumber for additional recommendations on fastener coatings as some preservatives can affect fastener life. More force is required to drive a nail into Trex Wood-Polymer lumber than regular wood. Hold nail while hammering until it is driven 1/2 to 3/4. Hitting a nail with full force when it is not driven in may cause it to fly out. Nail guns work very well with Trex Wood-Polymer lumber. For cold weather installations or when using wood screws or lag bolts, pre-drilling may be necessary. Do not drill holes any larger than 3/4 of the screw/bolt diameter. Pre-drilling is generally not required for self-tapping or deck screws. Trex Tip: Most screws will cause Trex lumber to "mushroom" up over the screw head. Simply tap down with a hammer to hide the fastener or pre-drill to reduce the "mushroom" effect. 36

Gapping Trex Wood-Polymer Lumber Trex products are engineered to last. Following proper gapping requirements will ensure your deck looks great year after year, preventing debris build up by facilitating drainage. Trex decking must also be gapped end-to-end, based upon the length of the board and the temperature at installation. For end-to-end gapping installations below 60 F - gap 3/16, above 60 F - gap 1/8. The required width-to-width gapping is 1/4. For below 40 F installations, 3/8 gapping is recommended. Trex decking must also be gapped 1/4 when decking is abutting a wall. For below 60 F installations, 1/2 gapping is recommended. Trex Wood-Polymer Lumber Colors & Weathering Process Trex Wood-Polymer lumber is available in five colors: Natural starts out in varying shades of tan and weathers to driftwood grey hues when exposed to sunlight and water. Winchester Grey starts out in varying shades of brown and weathers to deep, rich grey hues when exposed to sunlight and water. Madeira is a reddish brown and weathers slightly while maintain - ing its reddish brown hue. Woodland Brown is a dark brown and weathers slightly. Saddle is a deep tan and lightens while maintaining its rich tones. This weathering process is normal and does not harm the product. Cleaning Trex Wood-Polymer Lumber Periodically clean out gaps between Trex boards with a flat tool to ensure proper drainage. For stains caused by mold, mildew, berries and leaves, conven - tional deck washes containing detergent and sodium hypochlorite work well. For rust stains, ground-in dirt and grime, use cleaners containing oxalic or phosphoric acid which are commonly available in home centers and hardware stores. For tougher stains, such as oil or grease, scrub with a detergent containing a degreasing agent as soon as the stain occurs. Refer to Trex Wood-Polymer lumber Care and Cleaning Guide for more information. General Construction Facts Trex Wood-Polymer lumber complies with all major model codes issued by BOCA, ICBO, SBCCI and ICC. For detailed information, please see NER-508 and ICBO ES ER Trex Wood-Polymer composite lumber (1 1 4x6, 2x4, 2x6, and 2x8 planks) can be used as exterior decking in combustible construction for light-duty applications, such as in residential occupancies, falling within the scope of Part 9 of the National Building Code of Canada (NBC) 1995 subject to the limitations described in CCMC R. 41 APPENDIX: A MOLD TECHNICAL BULLETIN Mold Technical Bulletin Mold is a lower form of plant life that can settle and grow on any surface, including Trex decking. Mildew is a form of mold that grows on damp surfaces. Mold spores are similar to seeds, but cannot be seen until colonies form. Air currents, insects, animals and water transport the spores easily. Due to mold s adaptability and large number of species, it is very hard to control and impossible to totally eliminate. Mold will not affect the structural performance of Trex decking. In order to form visible colonies, mold needs food, moisture, and temperatures between 40 and 90 degrees F. Trex decking is not a food source for mold, but can collect food in the form of dirt and debris such as the overflow from flowerpots and gutters. Trex decking can also supply moisture if the gaps between deck boards are too small or clogged. Refer to Trex decking Usage Guidelines (p. 36 & 37) for gapping instructions. How to remove Mold from Trex Decking All exterior building materials require cleaning. Trex is no exception. Periodic cleaning of Trex decking will remove dirt that can feed mold. If mold colonies appear, clean the deck with a deck wash containing a detergent and sodium hypochlorite, commonly known as bleach. This chemical will lighten the wood on the surface of Trex in addition to removing the mold. To minimize lightening of darker Trex colors, dilute bleach cleaner 50% with water. The following brands of deck cleaners have been found to be effective in removing mold from Trex decking: PSC Composite Deck Restorer * (www. psc-solutions.com) Olympic Deck Wash** Behr *** Deck Prep and Mildew Stain Remover Follow all package directions for usage, safety and disposal. 42 APPENDIX: A PAINTING TECHNICAL BULLETIN Can Trex decking and railing be painted or stained? Yes, you can paint or stain Trex to achieve a custom color, but it is not necessary for protection. Paints and stains that adhere well to wood will work as well or better with Trex decking. Trex decking that has been weathered can be painted or stained at any time, even years after it has been installed. However, you should use a paint or stain that is made for a walking surface. What types of paints and stains shall I use? Most paints or stains that you would apply to wood can be applied to Trex decking and railing. The following paint companies have evaluated Trex and have suggested these coatings. Paint Manufacturer Toll Free Number for Technical Support Suggested Coating Cabot * Solid Color Decking Stain with Teflon Surface Protector Behr Deck Plus Solid Deck Stain (no primer needed) Olympic (PPG) Sherwin Williams ** Technical Sales Sherwin 1 Coat Olympic Deck Primer or Olympic Permanizer 2 Coats Olympic Solid Color Deck Stain S-W Deckscapes ext acrylic deck stain A Series or S-W Woodscapes ext acrylic deck stain A15 Series Should I wait until my Trex decking is faded before applying paint or stain? Yes, it is important to wait for Trex to fade (approximately 8-12 weeks) before applying paint or stain. If the Trex decking is painted or stained before it fades, the paint or stain could become discolored and adhesion may be compromised. This discoloration is not permanent and can be cleaned. Once I've picked out my paint or stain, what do I do? This easy three-step process will guide you: Wait until the Trex decking and railing fades, approximately 8-12 weeks. Clean your Trex surface. Never paint or stain over dirty surfaces or surfaces with mold or mildew. Refer to your owners kit for cleaning instructions. Apply the paint or stain in accordance with the manufacturer's directions. How long will the paint or stain on my Trex decking and railing last? This depends on the paint or stain, but testing has shown that paints and stains on Trex will last as long or longer than paints or stains on wood. Because Trex decking absorbs minimal moisture, the paint or stain will not experience checking or splitting. What about cleaning my painted or stained Trex? Consult with your paint or stain manufacturer's directions before cleaning. *Cabot is a registered trademark of Samuel Cabot, Inc. ** Sherwin Williams is a registered trademark of the Sherwin Williams Company. 40
