4 1. Introduction. This machine has been specifically designed for slicing bales of silage, hay or straw. Specifications. Most farm accidents can be avoided by observing simple precautions. You should read through the following precautions before operating the equipment and at intervals afterwards to refresh your memory. BE ALERT to the following dangers: SAFETY Before using the equipment for the first time, practise using the controls a number of times, well away from any buildings, persons and on solid level ground. Before starting the tractor to use the equipment, check that all the bolts are tight and that the lift mechanisms are in good working order. Check for oil leaks and ensure all guards are securely in position. Stop the tractor and remove the key before connecting or disconnecting the hydraulics. When operating the equipment, make sure no spectators or children are anywhere near the machines. Ensure that the bale splitter knife is in the closed position when not splitting bales. When moving the tractor fitted with the bale splitter, allow for the ground conditions. Page 4 McHale Bale Splitter I-3 R-1 02/11

5 2. Bale Splitter Safety Notes and Warnings. (Continued) Drive slowly on wet slippery or bumpy ground. Never make fast stops or turn when carrying a load. REMEMBER your traction is greatly reduced when the tractor is loaded at the front. When moving a tractor fitted with a bale splitter, lower and close the bale splitter, to shield the blade and tines. Always carry the bales as near to the ground as possible. Always keep back window closed when using a bale splitter on the three point linkage. When crossing, or climbing slopes, lower the bale near to the ground and drive slowly. Always wear heavy gloves when sharpening the blade of the bale splitter. 3. Operator Instructions. Fitting. Your bale splitter fits as standard to the three-point linkage of the tractor. Brackets are available for all types of loaders and may be acquired as necessary. Hydraulic requirements. The bale splitter requires a hydraulic supply with a minimum of 150 bar pressure and a minimum flow of 10 litres/min. Hydraulic pressure should never exceed 200 bar. If the bale splitter is to be used on a machine capable of generating over 200 bar for attached implements such as some telescopic loaders and other industrial spec machines your McHale dealer should be contacted. Quote pressure relief kit KST Operating. Before using the machine, it is extremely important to check that the blade is both clean and sharp. The machine may require sharpening before being put into use to ensure efficient working, this also allows the machine to cut bales using less pressure. The blade should be opened and the tines levelled before being driven hard into the bale. Spike the bale near the bottom. You must get the bale back against the bottom beam of the machine, otherwise it will not cut properly. As the bale splitter hydraulics are operated, the ram will extend and the blade will cut down through the bale centre. Care must be taken to hold the tines level and still. If the tines become loose, mechanical damage will occur and will also result in the bales having a mixture of cutting and tearing. Sharpening the Blade. Using a second cut flat face file, place the file on the chamfered face of the blade and draw-file along the blade face. Do not file along the flat face of the blade. Always ensure that heavy gloves are worn. 4. Maintenance. 1. All pivots should be greased regularly. 2. Check tightness of all nuts and bolts. 3. Check all hydraulic items for signs of wear and leakage. 4. Keep the blade sharp. Although the blade is of high quality steel, it must have regular attention. It may require a few minutes of gentle fine filing just to maintain the edge. A rotary grinder must NEVER be used as this will destroy the steel temper. Any nicks or burrs must be filed away. 5. In the event of serious irreparable damage to the bale splitter blade, a replacement blade may be fitted by cutting the blade away from the frame and a replacement blade welded into position. 6 5. Storage. Move the machine onto a level area where it is intended to store the machine. After stopping the engine, applying the parking brake and removing the key, disconnect the bale splitter from the tractor. Clean the Machine thoroughly and paint any bare metal. Coat the ram pistons and blades with grease. Cover the machine with a water-proof cover. 6. Warranty Conditions. This only applies to the defective parts recognised by us as such after delivery. The warranty does not apply to damage received during dismantling, reassembling or in transit. Flexible hoses are not covered by the warranty. Each part requested under the warranty will be invoiced. A credit note will be dispatched as soon as it is established that the part in question is defective. For further details, concerning warranty, see Section 9. 7 7. Decal kit Diagrams and Explanations It is important that all safety warnings and instructions are understood and followed. If any of the decals become damaged, or are missing, they are available from your McHale dealer. The part numbers are shown. [See picture on opposite page for individual decal locations] Below is the identification plate for the machine. It displays the individual serial number of your bale splitter. It is important to quote the serial number as well as machine type when enquiring about spare parts or technical information. Serial Number plate 1 CST00079 McHale decal 2 CST00047 Warning to rest knife in Horizontal position when not in use. Keep clear of machine. 3 CST00097 Keep all livestock clear when operating the bale splitter. The blade can seriously injure animals. 4 CST00098 For the bale splitter to operate to its optimum performance, the blade must be kept sharp. 5 CST00657 Max Hydraulic pressure 200 bar. 8 8. Assembly Instructions 1. Attach the tines to the bale splitter frame. M22 and M28 sockets are required to undo nuts from the back of the tines. Feed large tines through the two large bushes in the middle of the frame. Feed the small tine through either of the small bushes on the frame outer. 12 9. Limited Warranty McHale Limited Warranty McHale Engineering Ltd, Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo, Ireland (hereinafter called the company ) warrants to the original retail purchaser that new products sold and registered with the company, shall be, at the time of delivery, free from defects in material and workmanship, and that such equipment is covered under Limited Warranty providing the machine is used and serviced in accordance with the recommendations in the Operator s manual. This Limited Warranty covers the equipment for 10,000 bales, or a period of one year starting from the date the equipment is commissioned, whichever comes first. The online submission of the pre-delivery inspection (PDI) form by the dealer (Importer) is taken as evidence of the delivery of the machine to the original retail purchaser. This is compulsory, and is required to record the machine in the McHale warranty system. 1.1 These conditions are subject to the following exceptions; Parts of the machine which are not of McHale manufacture, such as tyres, PTO shafts, slip clutches, hydraulic cylinders, etc. are not covered by this limited warranty, but are subject to the warranty of the original manufacturer. Warranty claims applying to these types of parts must be submitted in the same way as if they were parts manufactured by McHale. However, compensation will be paid in accordance with the warranty agreement of the manufacturer concerned. This limited warranty does not apply to failure through normal wear and tear, to damage resulting from negligence or from lack of inspection, from misuse, from lack of maintenance and/or if the machine has been involved in an accident, lent out or used for purposes other than those for which it was intended by the company. This Limited Warranty will not apply to any product that has been altered or modified in any way without the express permission of the company, or if parts not approved by McHale are used in repair. The company take no responsibility for any additional costs, including loss of oil and/or consumables incurred during the failure and repair of a product The company cannot be held responsible for any claims or injuries to the owner or to the third party, nor to any resulting responsibility. Also, on no account can the company be held liable for incidental or consequential damages (including loss of anticipated profits) or for any impairment due to failure, a latent defect or a breakdown of a machine. 1.2 The customer will be responsible for the following costs; Normal maintenance such as greasing, maintenance of oil levels, minor adjustments, etc. as specified in the Operator s manual. Labour charges other than originally agreed, incurred in the removal and replacement of components. Dealer s travel time and travel costs to and from the machine. Parts defined as normal wear items such as, but not limited to belts, blades, knives, tines, tine bars, slip clutches, nylon chain runners and slides, etc. that are not covered under the Limited Warranty. 1.3 The importer will be responsible for the following costs; All warranty labour charges. 13 1.4 The limited Warranty is dependent on the strict observance of the following conditions: The machine has been put in service by the dealer according to our instructions. The online pre-delivery inspection (PDI) form has been correctly completed by the dealer. A printed version of the PDI form has been signed and dated by the original retail purchaser. This copy is to be stored by the dealer and made available to McHale when requested. The warranty claim is submitted using the McHale online claims system. The warranty claim must be submitted by the original retailing McHale dealer only. The decision of the Company in all cases is final. Damaged parts should be held by the dealer until credit has been given, or a returns request has been issued. Parts must be returned to McHale with the McHale claim number written clearly on each individual part. These parts must be free from dirt and oil. If a part is returned in an unfit state, the claim will be refused. If damaged parts have been returned to the company and warranty is refused, the dealer is allowed a period of one month from the date of receiving our notification to request the return of the damaged parts to the dealer site. 1.5 Further conditions: limits of application and responsibility This Limited Warranty cannot be assigned or transferred to anyone without the prior written consent of the Company. McHale Dealers have no right or authority to assume any obligation or take any decision on the Company's behalf, whether expressly or tacitly. Technical assistance given by the company or its agents for repairing or operating equipment does not lead to any responsibility on the Company's behalf and cannot under any circumstances bring novation or derogation to the conditions of the present Limited Warranty. The Company reserves the right to incorporate changes in its machines without prior notice and without obligation to apply these changes to machines previously manufactured. The present Limited Warranty excludes any other responsibility, whether legal or conventional, express or implied, and there are no warranties extending beyond those defined herein.
