1 fire & smoke stop for above suspended ceilings.01 Introduction Lamatherm s and CS systems have been developed to provide a simple and easy to install method of sealing the void formed above suspended ceilings. The standard range has been optimized to include options of materials that are costeffectively matched to suit the specific performance criteria for all suspended ceiling void requirements. Being specifically designed for this application, these products represent a combination of fully qualified performance, practical installation and service benefits. The products have integral aluminum foil facings to provide a Class O rating and excellent resistance to smoke. A unique method of manufacture (patent protected) provides a resilient lateral compression required to ensure a tight fit. As standard, the materials are supplied with an interlocking overlap joint to further enhance the integrity of the installation. The materials are either supplied as pre-cut units to suit a quoted void size or in sheet form for cutting on site and are installed with no fixing sub-frame being required. -CB Cavity Barrier systems are used to subdivide uninterrupted voids in accordance with Building Regulations. 2 .02 Application The Lamatherm systems provide a certified resilient seal between the top of a partition, or fire resistant suspended ceiling, and the structural soffit. The choice of material is simply determined by the performance requirement in terms of fire resistance. Typical applications include:- Voids above suspended ceilings Acoustic barriers Areas of difficult access -CB Cavity Barriers have been specifically developed to meet the provisions for cavity barriers as required by current legislation. They are used to laterally subdivide large uninterrupted voids above suspended ceilings of up to 1 metre or less. The vertical seals used to subdivide the ceiling voids should, wherever possible, be placed so as to coincide with the fireresisting partitions in the compartment below the ceiling. This may require location of barriers at less than the maximum 20 Approved Document B to the current Building Regulations stipulates maximum dimensions for concealed spaces so as to limit the spread of unseen fire & smoke. 3 .03 Description The materials can be either supplied as precut units to suit a quoted void size or in sheet form for cutting on site. Standard sheet product is supplied 1200 x 1200mm and is complete with edge rebate detail. Supply in sheet form may be of benefit when the actual ceiling void is not known or where it varies significantly. The correct sized units are placed in position ensuring that the interlocking joints are pushed tightly together..04 Installation For all installations they are fitted to the full depth of the ceiling void with a compression allowance:- For voids up to 200mm high the minimum product height is void height + 5%. For voids mm the minimum product height is void + 10mm. 4 Fixing brackets are incorporated into the assembly to maintain the integrity of the construction. They are simply impaled alternately into the top and base of the barrier prior to installing, using 3No. per unit which are positioned at nom. 400mm centres. The fixing brackets are mechanically fixed to the surrounding structure with steel fixings. The standard fixing brackets are available in flat pre-notched form for folding on site to the requisite "L" or "Z" shape. They are precut to a spike so that the long leg can penetrate into the barrier. For voids up to 400mm, B15 0 brackets are used. These comprise galvanized mild steel, 150mm x 120mm x 25mm long x 1mm thick. 6 .06 Acoustics The and CS range additionally provides a high performance acoustic barrier which improves the room-to-room sound reduction of suspended ceilings. Their acoustic performance is attributable to the mass of the mineral fibre core coupled to the unique resilient lamella board internal construction. 7 .07 Service penetrations Fire spread and limitation of damage is principally achieved by compartmentation. These compartments are bounded by fire resistant elements - including Lamatherm Fire Stops. Accidental Release Measures No special measures required. 7. Handling and Storage Avoid unnecessary handling of product. Store in a dry place. 8. Exposure Controls and Personal Protection Maximum Exposure Limit (MEL) 5mg/m 3, 8 hour weighted average. Ensure good general ventilation. Local exhaust ventilation may be required if the method of use produced dust levels in excess of the MEL. Respiratory protection: If the MEL cannot be met, disposable face masks complying with BS/EN149 FFP1 or FFP2 should be used and are suitable for most applications. Hand protection: Not normally required but industrial gloves can be worn. Eye protection: When working with product above head height, eye protection is advised. Skin protection: No special requirement other than loose clothing. 9. Physical and Chemical Properties Appearance: vitreous mineral wool supplied in the form of foil faced strips or foil faced lamella slabs. Melting point above 1000 o C. Solubility: insoluble in water and generally chemically inert. 10. Stability and Reactivity No special physical conditions need to be avoided. No restrictions regarding incompatible materials. Above 230 o C, some binder degradation may occur for a short while, leading to the evolution of small quantities of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and other trace gases. 11. Toxicological Effects Human epidemiological studies show no link between exposure to mineral wool fibres and lung disease or any other chronic effects. The base fibres are not classified as a carcinogen by the European Commission Directive 97/69/ EC. 12. Ecological Information Stable product with no known adverse environmental effects. No CFCs or HCFCs are used in the manufacture of the base slab materials. Zero ozone depletion potential. 13. Disposal Considerations No special precautions.
