4 Oriented strand board (OSB) and MDI A winning combination Huntsman is a leading resin manufacturer for the OSB market and OSB is the fastest growing application in the wood binding industry. OSB, produced to the EN 300 standard, is an engineered wood structural panel that is rapidly gaining popularity. OSB applications include: timber frame construction hoarding and barriers, shutters and fences furniture manufacture, not only as decorative furniture but also to reduce thickness and weight of furniture components (chair seats and backs, furniture frames, desk tops under lamination) fair and shopfittings, for both structural and decorative components dry storage pallets vehicle and wagon interiors 4

5 What advantages does MDI offer? In OSB production the use of 100% MDI resin results in a high performance panel with excellent mechanical strength/durability, good moisture resistance and a high dimensional stability. The use of MDI also results in reduced blender maintenance cost (time/frequency), faster cure, lower formaldehyde emissions and lower drier energy. Our SUPRASEC fast cure resins and release systems offer OSB manufacturers opportunities to increase production output. SUPRASEC 1483 resin is our catalysed fast cure resin and SUPRASEC 1560 our ultra-fast cure resin, which provides an increase in production capacity. Depending on the press system, we offer different release agents which are applied externally on the press belt. Additive 9366 is suitable for multi-daylight lines with screens, Additive 9263 gives excellent performance on continuous press systems. 6 Medium density fibreboard (MDF) A continuously growing market Since 1966, when the first MDF panel was produced commercially in the USA, the demand for MDF has increased dramatically around the world. Thanks to its availability in a wide range of thicknesses and to its excellent machinabillity, MDF has a wide variety of applications such as construction, furniture and flooring. It is also a continuously evolving market. MDF producers have brought many innovative products to the market to address customer needs, for example anti-bacterial treatments, sound absorbing systems and direct printing applications. Through innovation and pioneering technology, Huntsman has established itself in this exciting market as a key MDI-resin supplier. MDI can be used 100% in the production of special MDF quality grades like exterior grade panels, moisture resistant panels, thin panels for flooring applications and low density panels. All panels are produced according to the F **** or super E0 formaldehyde emission standard. 6

7 SUPRASEC 1041 resin is a result of Huntsman s continuous development in resin technology. This resin has the important advantage that it forms a stable emulsion with water, providing better distribution on the fibers in the blow line. The result is a significant increase in panel performance. Another advantage of MDI is the ability to work as a catalyst in combination with standard resins. On continuous production lines this means a possible increase of 15% in line speed or an additional positive effect on the panel properties (SUPRASEC 1041 resin). For MDF, Huntsman has developed two groups of release agents, the first (additives 9898 and 9897) is applied internally on the fibers. These release agents can be in-line mixed with the resin and added into the blow line. The other group includes additive 9333, where the product is sprayed externaly on the press belt or in case of a multi-daylight press, on the screens. Each group has its own advantages. The internal release agent does not result in emissions, the external release is cheaper due to lower dosing rates, and is only sprayed on top of premat/screens. 8 Particle board (PB) A traditional material in a modern industry As a base material PB provides an enormous range of possibilities in furniture manufacturing and makes wood furniture more affordable. It is easy to work and flexible in application. Different types of specialty boards can be produced according to individual building application requirements. Moisture resistance, fire retardance or acoustic insulation are all properties which can be achieved by using specific types of particle board. Using MDI on your particle board line will bring you significant benefits for example, an improvement in board properties and a significant increase in production capacity. SUPRASEC 1047 resin is our MDI resin specially developed for the particle board industry. This resin is compatible with standard (melamine) urea formaldehyde (M)UF resins and is commonly used as a catalyst in hybrid systems, which can result in an increase of 15 % production output. Our other catalyzed fast cure resins are also suitable for particle board production. Together with additives 9366 and 9333, our external release agents, Huntsman can provide a full package of excellent products suitable for your production line. 9 Wood fibre insulation board (WFIB) The next generation insulation board Wood fibre insulation board (WFIB) up to a thickness of 240mm is a brand new application in the wood-based panel industry and another example of Huntsman s dedication to continuous innovation. This type of panel has a high performance in sound and heat insulation and offers an excellent alternative to standard insulation materials such as mineral fibre. Huntsman has developed a resin specially for WFIB. SUPRASEC 1549 resin, a low temperature curing MDI resin, is designed to give excellent board properties under extreme conditions (a low press temperature or a high moisture content) without negative effect on production output. 10 Composite wood products Building a sustainable future Increasing focus is being given to the environment to safeguard our planet for future generations. At Huntsman we believe that our Composite Wood Products business has a major role to play in support of sustainable and environmentally responsible construction and manufacturing technologies. Global warming The manufacture of composite wood products relies on timber sourced from managed and sustainable forestry resources, which ensures that a greater number of trees are planted than those harvested. Fast growing young trees absorb more carbon dioxide than mature trees, thus helping to trap the carbon contained in one of the principal green house gases. Deforestation In many areas of the world, illegal logging and deforestation are significant issues, destroying habitats, reducing biodiversity and damaging the water cycle. Composite wood products produced using sustainable forestry resources are a real alternative to panel products such as plywood that are produced from large mature trees that take many years to grow. Energy conservation To combat the increasing cost of energy and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, increasing use is being made of timber frame building as an efficient, high quality and sustainable construction method. For example in the UK, timber frame construction is increasingly specified by housing associations seeking to develop affordable, high quality, energy efficient homes, with over 25% of all social housing projects being based on timber framed construction. Timber frame construction is increasingly seen as the modern alternative to traditional brick and concrete construction in many areas of the world. Indoor air quality Consumers are increasingly concerned about the quality of the air in their homes and the levels of volatile organic compounds emitted by the buildings and furnishings around them. Composite wood products manufactured using high efficiency MDI binders contain zero added formaldehyde, meeting the most stringent of standards specified around the world.
