2 The Story of Tile Clay tile traces its ancient origin as a roofing material to China and the Middle East during the Neolithic period. Originally, builders formed these tiles by hand, shaping clay, drying it, and then firing it to achieve a durable and attractive roofing solution from readily available materials. By Biblical times, many cultures of the world crafted clay tile roofs, including Egyptians, Babylonians, Romans, and Greeks. The public buildings and villas of ancient Rome were generally roofed with clay tile. In the Americas, the clay tile roofing tradition was first introduced to the east coast in the 17th century, with distinct types of clay roofing tile brought by Dutch, English, French, and Spanish settlers. Each culture had their own slightly different tradition for hand crafted tile, and manufactured clay tiles were even imported from the Old World until the first clay tile manufacturing facilities were erected in With the growth of urban areas on the East Coast of the United States, clay tile became a very popular roofing choice due to the ever present concern over fire. After devastating fires in London (1666) and Boston (1679), the communities of Boston and New York introduced the first building and fire codes. This practical urban concern about fire danger encouraged the use of tile roofs over the next 200 years. On the west coast, Spanish tile arrived with the construction of Spanish missions starting in the late 18th century. Spanish tile, which is also sometimes called Mission tile, was characterized by a series of convex rounded pan tiles that were traditionally terra cotta red in color. The color of Spanish tile varied somewhat depending on the mineral composition of the clay deposit, and also on whether additional elements were added before or during the firing process. Another common color for Spanish tile was green, owing to the natural deposits of copper in the clay. Spanish tile was sometimes variegated or glazed, and painted in a wide variety of hues. Since its introduction by Spanish missionaries and explorers, Spanish tile has been a defining feature of many styles of North American architecture. In the mid- to late-1800s, as revival styles of architecture came into vogue, Spanish tile

3 experienced a surge in popularity as a required element for styles such as the elegant Italianate Villa or Romanesque Revival. Later, the in 1915, the Panama- California Exposition in San Diego sparked a nationwide passion for Spanish Revival style building, as well as the addition of Spanish tile roofs to many different types of architecture. (Grimmer & Williams, 1992) Of all types of clay tile, Spanish tile continues to be a popular choice that brings many different home styles to life. From Seville to Marseille to Tripoli, a distinctive Spanish tile roofscape serves as the hallmark of many Mediterranean cities. Because Spanish tile evokes this Old World look, a Spanish tile roof traditionally defines many classic architectural styles such as Mission, Spanish Revival, and Mediterranean. Against a lighter adobe or stucco exterior, a red to brown Spanish tile roof provides the pop of color that identifies the style. Spanish tile in various shades also coordinates well with many types of brick homes. Certain varieties of red brick shine with either a darker Spanish tile or a contrasting green Spanish tile. A natural yellow brick home topped with red Spanish tile becomes sublime. Or a classic grey brick home roofed with darker grey tile can achieve a modern edge. The earthiness of a Spanish tile roof provides counteracting warmth when paired with many types of stone. Historically, Spanish tile is a common feature of stone Romanesque Revival, Georgian, and Renaissance Revival homes. For modern stone designs, a combination of stone and Spanish tile conveys permanence and casual elegance. Homes of many shapes and sizes feature Spanish tile rooflines. From a four-story multi-family building with a low profile roof, to a sprawling adobe ranch style home with multiple rooflines, Spanish tile is a natural complement. Spanish tile can lend an air of movement to a complicated roofline extending in different directions, or can add visual interest to a simple bungalow. Spanish tile is used in many parts of North America to add an element of texture and interest. With its classic elegance and long history, Spanish tile remains the most popular choice in many parts of the West and Southwest, as well as across the United States. Given the variety of colors for naturally occurring clays, and the tradition of glazing Spanish tile in a wide variety of hues, a broad range of color expressions are possible. Our Terracotta color is the classic medium brown hue with a hint of orange that defines tile roofs around the world. Weathered Clay uses that same hue as a base but also features a more white and weathered look on the top of the barrels. These earthy, clay-colored options look natural with a range of hues, from creamy whites to red brick and pale stone. With Matterhorn Tile, the crucial task was to form a color palette that would have the perfect visual temperature blend to evoke the timeless look of real clay tile. 7 Matterhorn Metal Roofing Tile Colors: Matterhorn Jade & Weathered Sage Our Inspiration: We wanted to include jade in the line as a classic tile color, yet an alternative that stands out in a neighborhood of browns. Historically, a green colored tile was often created by adding copper to the clay before firing. Less common but still traditional, jade is a distinctive yet subtle green shade. Our lightly mottled Jade color coordinates well with creamy golden stucco or cream, particularly with wood tone accents, or black with a Tuscan theme or red brick for a cottage feel. For a delicately aged look, choose Weathered Sage. They reflect a variety of traditional brick colors, combined to create a fairly neutral option. They are both especially appealing with creamy yellow or light beige, and contrast nicely with sage. 9 Matterhorn Metal Roofing Tile Colors: Matterhorn Tuscan Stone & Weathered Sequoia Our Inspiration: Tuscan Stone and Weathered Sequoia are the darkest of our tile color offerings, mid-tone browns with natural appeal. These colors evoke Tuscan villas and vineyards, where darker roofs and trim are often used with light yellowish stone and stucco. The darker color incorporates the home into the landscape, and provides relief against the sky. These versatile colors coordinate with nearly any off-white or lighter natural hue, and pairs well even with green undertones. The result of our research is a selection of classic tile colors for modern sensibilities.
