Using the Garni IMS Auxiliary Station Records in Operation of the Nextgeneration Real-Time Seismic Intensity Display System in Armenia Valery Arzumanyan, PhD National Survey for Seismic Protection Agency, Ministry of Emergency Situations, Armenia
Recently, a number of real-time seismic systems have been designed for providing rapid information after seismic event. One of them is the Real-Time Seismic Intensity Display System introduced in Japan after the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake (Kobe, Japan, M6.8, 6430 casualties, $120billion property losses) on the base of strong motion seismographs. In the frame of ongoing joint Japan-Armenia Project for the seismic risk assessment and risk management planning in the Republic of Armenia it is planned to implement such system in Yerevan city, capital of Armenia, especially vulnerable to earthquake disaster.
The necessity of the Real-Time Seismic Intensity Display System in Yerevan city The importance of implementation of such system become evident, when we analyzed dramatic social and economic consequences of the Spitak, 1988, M=7.0 destructive earthquake. Recovery from this disastrous earthquake is far from complete, more than 20 years, later.
During the Kobe (Japan) earthquake situation awareness was delayed and the rescue fell behind. In the time of Spitak earthquake awareness of situation was practically absent and help was late. The present scarcity of quantitative measurements of ground shaking and its damaging effects on the built environment.
What is The Real Time Seismic Intensity Display System? Data Acquisition Data Collection & Processing Data Display The seismic intensity The distribution of seismic intensity
The system will be based on 5 strong motion seismographs installed in the central part of Yerevan city and the surroundings (Densely Populated Areas)
The Surface waves survey studies necessary for the Real-Time Seismic Intensity Display System in Yerevan city The system will allow to obtain the earthquake intensity distribution in the city of Yerevan. The territory was divided into the grid of 250x250m. Surface waves survey has been carried out by Japanese specialists and S-velocity structure was determined with the creation of the Ground Model for Yerevan city.

In Garni (Republic of Armenia), at the geophysical observatory, the seismic recording station is functioning. This station is included in the IRIS Global Seismographic Network (GSN) and it provides seismographic data to research, earthquake hazard mitigation and the verification of a Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (CTBT). Collected data are transferred to Vienna International Data Centre, Albuquerque Seismological Laboratory and Armenian National Data Centre NDC AM 008 via satellite based Global Communication Infrastructure (GCI).

The Planning Real Time Seismic Intensity Display System in Yerevan city will automatically determine the distribution of seismic intensity during an earthquake. The earthquake alarm information will be sent in real-time to the Disaster Prevention Center of the Ministry of Emergency Situations (MES) of the Republic of Armenia. The host computer at the Center upon receiving information will estimate seismic intensity using data about site location and site amplification response due to soil condition. The seismic intensity distribution information will be basic material for MES RA, providing the opportunity for central and local governments to undertake necessary actions in emergency. Data obtained from IMS Garni station will be used in new seismic system verification activities.
