1 DuPont Formacel BLOWING AGENT TECHNICAL INFORMATION ABA-1 Materials Compatibility with DuPont Formacel S Like other HCFCs, DuPont Formacel S has greater solvency powers than CFC-11. Thus, it isimportant to assess its effects on elastomer and plastic materials of construction. Simple exposure of different materials to Formacel S provides insight into their compatibility with Formacel S. Coupons of different elastomers and plastics were exposed to both Formacel S liquid and vapor at 7 F for seven days. To quantify the effect of the exposure, percent linear swell and percent extractables (coupon weight loss) are measured. Table 1 is a list of elastomers and plastics used, though not all were tested in every case. Additionally, for the liquid Formacel S exposures, only linear swell data is available. The amount of linear swell is a valuable guide in determining whether or not the elastomer or plastic is suitable for use with Formacel S; the lower the linear swell, the more suitable the material. In this way, materials can be screened for use with Formacel S; final selection of elastomers and plastics, however, should include testing more specific to the application. When foaming with low-boiling Formacel S, materials of construction in foamed products are more likely to contact only blowing agent vapors. Compatibility tests with vapor exposure alone, showed that the effect of Formacel S, was less severe than with a liquid exposure. Data for the exposure tests are summarized in Table. For convenience, linear swell results are plotted in the attached figures.
