102 Services & Useful Info 100 STONE USAGE GUIDE To assist in deciding whether a specific stone is appropriate for certain uses, the coding system below was developed and corresponds with the charts on the following pages for all available natural stone. Special NOTES Not recommended in wet areas. Can be used in interior wet areas, if sealed and maintained properly. If not properly maintained, the stone look could be altered. Please contact your sealer manufacturer or your Daltile sales representative for information about products that can protect the stone from moisture exposure. Might contain dry seams, pits, fossils and glass veins that are filled at the factory or during installation. These are all inherent characteristics of the stone. Since these voids can sometimes lose their fillings, they should be refilled as part of normal maintenance. A sealer is recommended. (Note: Some stones, such as limestone and tumbled stone among others, should be sealed prior to grouting.) These stones contain deposits of minerals and iron that may react to moisture. Stone bleeding or rusting is a common example of this. These stones should not be used in installations where they would be exposed to standing, run-off water or too much humidity. Water Absorption, ASTM C Water absorption is measured using ASTM C Individual tiles are weighed, saturated with water, then weighed again. The percent difference between the two conditions is referred to as the water absorption value. Tiles are classified according to water absorption percentages as follows: Impervious Tiles exhibiting 0.5% or less. Vitreous Tiles exhibiting more than 0.5%, but not more than 3.0%. Semi-Vitreous Tiles exhibiting more than 3.0%, but not more than 7.0%. Non-Vitreous Tiles exhibiting more than 7.0%. Scratch Hardness (MOH s Scale Ratings) The relative hardness of glazed tile is an important issue that should be addressed when selecting a tile. The test is performed by scratching the surface of the tile with different minerals and subjectively assigning a MOH s Scale Hardness number to the glaze. The softest mineral used is talc ( 1 rating) - the hardest is a diamond ( 10 rating). Other minerals of varying hardness providing MOH s Scale Hardness values of 5 or more are suitable for most residential floor applications. A value of 7 or greater is normally recommended for commercial applications. Breaking Strength Ceramic Tile, ASTM C Ceramic tiles used on floors and walls must be able to withstand the expected load bearing capacity of various installations. The tile industry uses ASTM C to determine the strength and durability of the tile. A force is applied to an unsupported portion of the tile specimen until breakage occurs. The ultimate breaking strength is then recorded in pounds. Final selection of the tile should be based upon the breaking strength and the appropriate installation method. Tile integrity is critically dependent upon proper installation. Dal-Tile recommends strict adherence to industry installation guidelines set forth in ANSI A108, A118 and A136. Chemical Resistance, ASTM C Chemical resistance is measured using ASTM C A tile sample is placed in continuous contact with a variety of chemicals for 24 hours, rinsing the surface and then examining the surface for visible variation. Shade Variations Tiles range from complete consistency to a more random appearance. Here s an overview of color and shading of individual tile selections. Monochromatic (V0) - Very uniform, monochromatic color Low (V1) - Consistent color within each tile and from tile to tile Medium (V2) - Color variation within each tile High (V3) - Some variation from tile to tile, and within each tile Random (V4) - Considerable variation from tile to tile Abrasion Resistance, ASTM C The durability of glazed tile is measured subjectively by observing the visible surface abrasion of the tile when subjected to the ASTM C testing procedure. Dal-Tile evaluates glazed tile recommended for floor applications using this test method which includes the following classification system: Class Zero Class One (Light Residential) 1 Class Two (Residential) 2 Class Three (Heavy Residential or Light Commercial) 3 Class Four (Commercial) 4 Class Five (Heavy Commercial) 5 Not recommended for use on floors. Light Traffic - Residential floor coverings in areas subject to softsoled footwear or normal footwear traffic, without scratching dirt (i.e. domestic bathrooms and bedrooms without exterior access). Medium to Light Traffic - Residential floor coverings in areas subject to soft-soled footwear or normal footwear traffic with small amounts of scratching dirt (i.e. rooms in the living areas of homes except kitchens, entrances and other areas that may be subjected to high usage). Medium to Heavy Traffic - Residential or light commercial may withstand normal footwear and regular traffic, with some dirt and/ or other abrasives present in limited quantities. Tile in this class may be used in light commercial installations with limited foot traffic and with no direct access to the outside. Examples may include residential kitchens and hallways with limited traffic from the outside. Heavy Traffic - Residential and commercial floor coverings subjected to considerable traffic and scratching dirt (i.e. entrances, workrooms, inns, exhibition halls, and sales rooms, as well as other rooms in public and private buildings). Floors should be adequately protected against scratching dirt at the entrances to buildings by either floor mats or some other footwear cleaning device. Heavy Traffic - Heavy commercial floor coverings subject to heavy traffic with very abrasive soil. Industry Standards The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) are nationally recognized organizations, which identify and develop industry test methods and technical standards. *Neither ASTM nor ANSI establish an industry standard identifying a minimum COF value whereby ceramic tile may be labeled slip resistant. All Standard Grade ceramic tile products manufactured by or for Daltile meet or exceed the requirements of ANSI A See product pages for series-specific technical data. INSTALLATION PRODUCTS With a variety of forward-thinking product innovations at your disposal, even the most difficult tile installation is made simple. Ask your Daltile representative for information on installation products you ll need for your next project, including thin sets, grouts, adhesives, epoxies, water-proofing membranes, and concrete backer board. INSTALLATION CONSIDERATIONS Water, oil, grease, etc. create slippery conditions. Floor applications with exposure to these conditions require extra caution in product selection. Latex modified thin-set recommended for all ColorBody and glazed porcelains. Strong random shading enhances the natural beauty of many Daltile products. To achieve optimal results of a product with Random Shading, tiles should be selected from multiple cartons and shading arrangement planned prior to installation. For ColorBody Porcelain tiles, special care should be taken when grouting with dark pigmented colors. A grout release is recommended to prevent finely powdered pigments from lodging in the pores of the tile surface. Special preparation is needed when installing tiles 20" and larger. Please refer to www. daltile.com/largetiles for additional information. Any rectified series with rectangle sizes, should use a 3/16" grout joint when installed in a staggered brick-joint pattern. The overlap should not exceed 33%. Pre-grout sealing is recommended when installing all natural stone decorative accents. This prevents grout from staining the stone during the grouting process, and eases grout cleanup. After installation, sealing of the stone will reduce porosity and increase stain resistance. Use a penetrating or surface coating type of sealer, depending on desired aesthetic. Cove Base and Floor Bullnose trim are intended to coordinate with floor field tile in the standard 90-degree installation position. daltile.com

105 CARE AND MAINTENANCE Many Daltile tile products require limited maintenance. Our glazed and unglazed tile, under normal situations, can be cleaned using clear water with a tile cleaner. Always follow up with a rinse of clean water. Regular maintenance is recommended to avoid build-up of residue, dirt, grease, soap, detergents or other external contaminants. We do not recommend acid cleaning our tile products. For all floor cleaning operations, follow these basic procedures: 1. Sweep or vacuum surface 2. Mix water with tile or grout cleaner per manufacturer s instructions and apply to surface 3. Allow solution to sit for three to five minutes 4. Agitate with sponge or mop 5. Mop up solution 6. Rinse mop and change cleaning solution at least every 500 square feet 7. Rinse thoroughly with clean water 8. Dry mop floor to remove moisture or pick up residue with a wet-vac 9. Wipe the floor dry Coarse or abrasive tile surfaces need more frequent maintenance. Agitation should be vigorous and water changed frequently. Proper cleaning of these types of tile is necessary to maintain slip resistance. The presence of grease or water may create slippery conditions. Be careful to avoid introduction of grease from dirty mops to your floor surface while cleaning. *Wax cleaners, oil-based detergents, and sealants may decrease the slip resistance of ceramic tile. Sealants may be used on grout. Consult the manufacturer of the cleaner, detergent, or sealant for more detailed information on the impact of their cleaning solution to your tile product. Glass Tiles For routine cleaning, use any non-abrasive cleaning compound recommended for either glass or tile. Metal Signatures/Urban METALS To clean, use a liquid non-abrasive household cleaner. DO NOT use scouring pads, steel wool, sandpaper or other abrasive products. Avoid cleaners containing ammonia, bleach, or abrasives. Always test in a small inconspicuous area when using a new cleaner to ensure compatibility. Test results on a particular product may vary slightly from tile to tile, and from test to test. Test results disclosed in this catalog are not guarantees of minimum or maximum thresholds of performance. Tile containing abrasives create a rough surface. While this condition enhances slip resistance, it creates cleaning challenges because dirt and other contaminants become lodged in the surface. Extra attention is necessary to assure contaminants are removed promptly. Natural stone products, such as marble and granite, are inherently subject to variations in shading, markings and coefficient of friction. Purchasers must inspect and accept shipments with the full knowledge and understanding that any claims concerning the acceptability of the product must be presented to Dal-Tile and resolved prior to installation. Unless specifically stated otherwise, tile recommended by Dal-Tile for floor or wall applications refers to interior applications only. Dal-Tile does not recommend its products for use on ceilings or roofs. Check local building codes prior to specification or installation to verify that the specified technical characteristics comply with all required parameters. Color samples as shown may not be an exact product match. Dal- Tile explicitly disclaims any liability arising out of product selections that rely solely upon the color samples reprinted in product literature. The terms of this warranty may be found at daltile.com/warranty. Factors to Consider Prior to Installation 1. No floor tile is slip proof. However, proper care and maintenance procedures should be followed. 2. Absent an exception below, glazed floor tiles and porcelain tiles should not be used in floor applications where there is a consistent surface presence of water, oil, or grease. This includes outdoor areas. 3. Proper maintenance is critical. Improper maintenance and improper maintenance products can result in a build-up on the surface of the tile causing the tile to be slippery. See maintenance recommendations above. 4. Professional restauranteurs use special floor cleaning machines and cleaners to assure removal of contaminants, which are critical to maintain slip resistance in dining areas. Restaurant and commercial kitchen applications are considered highrisk areas subject to floor contamination by substances that increase slipping. Dal-Tile does not recommend the use of glazed floor tile or porcelain tile in a commercial kitchen unless the SCOF exceeds.80 wet. The use of a glazed floor tile in a dining room of a restaurant is subject to the same risk factors. A glazed floor tile or porcelain tile may be suitable for the dining area if: (a) the SCOF meets or exceeds.60 wet, AND (b) the utmost care is taken to properly clean the floor and minimize the presence of water. 5. Pool decking has a continuous exposure to standing water and Dal-Tile does not recommend glazed floor tile or porcelain tile on pool decks unless the surface (1) has minimal glaze, (2) SCOF meets or exceeds.60 wet, (3) has a textured surface, and (4) is not polished or semi-polished. Proper drainage is a necessary prerequisite for all pool decking tile applications. A textured surface is by its nature rough and may be uncomfortable to bare feet. 6. floor applications are considered to have a continuous exposure to standing water due to weather conditions. Glazed and unglazed ceramic and porcelain tiles are not recommended for exterior floor applications unless the tile surface: (1) SCOF meets or exceeds 0.60 wet, (2) is textured, (3) is not polished or semi-polished. NOTE: areas require extra attention to minimize slippery conditions including proper drainage, systematic clean up of wet or contaminated conditions, and regular inspection of tiled floor surface to assure immediate correction of wet or contaminated conditions. 7. Slippery conditions can be reduced by (1) limiting foot traffic in wet conditions, (2) prompt removal of contaminants, (3) effective drainage, and (4) proper maintenance. 8. Polished and semi polished surfaces create a very smooth surface. Dal-Tile does not recommend polished surfaces in any areas subject to water, oil, or grease exposures. 9. Ramped surfaces, irrespective of the degree of incline, require a more slip resistant surface for safety purposes. Dal-Tile recommends a minimum of SCOF.80 wet on all ramps or inclined flooring. 10. Test Methods there are many different test methods for slip resistance. The tile industry uses ASTM C for SCOF and AcuTest A137.1 for DCOF (dynamic coefficient of friction). DCOF is important, because it more realistically measures conditions similar to walking on tile. DCOF AcuTest uses slightly soapy water instead of clean water to more realistically recreate environments where slipping occurs..42 Wet is the new measurement standard for DCOF AcuTest. Dal-Tile recommends that customers have tile independently tested to determine if the Dal-Tile product meets the requirements of the customer s preferred test method (if other than ASTM C ) prior to product selection. Be sure to test competitor s products under any preferred alternative method for comparison purposes.
