2 Floating Floors Floating Floors and Room-within-a-Room Structures Floating floor and room-within-a-room structures represent the state-of-the-art technique to control vibrations and structure-borne noise within buildings. They are used to separate TV, broadcasting or recording studios, recital and rehearsal rooms as well as theatres, but also discotheques, gymnasia and HVAC areas dynamically and acoustically from the surrounding. For more than 50 years GERB has been developing spring elements for floating floor and room-within-a-room structures based on steel coil springs. They guarantee highest attenuation values by extremely low system natural frequencies. At 7 down to 2.5 Hz GERB steel spring elements are the most efficient solution to protect highly sensitive areas safely from mechanical vibration as well as from structure-borne noise. Vibration and structure borne noise isolation starts from frequencies as low as 4 Hz. making them superior to any elastic pad material. 2. Supporting types are arranged below the floating slab. They are designed for high and concentrated loads and can be subsequently adjusted to the actual loads as required. All spring elements can be provided with damping improving the system damping as well as the attenuation levels in the higher frequency range. The air gap between the floating slab and the substructure should have a minimum height of 30 to 40 mm. In special cases, especially on demand of the acoustic consultant, a gap as high as 100 mm or even more is also possible. Basic Spring Element Systems For floating floors, GERB offers a variety of spring element systems. Beside of a large number of steel springs of different elasticity and load capacity, there are several element systems available for a wide range of applications: 1. Embedded in the concrete slab, jackup type spring units are a best choice in terms of installation, re-adjustability, and system flatness. Jack-up -type spring unit

3 Phase 5 Installation of springs from top Phase 3 Fixing of reinforcements Embedded jack-up Spring Elements This floating floor spring element system* offers the following features: A range of different types of springs is available to provide system natural frequencies as low as 2.5 to 7 Hz. The decision depends on the respective requirements in terms of vibration attenuation and slab stability. Springs are accessible from above which makes subsequent levelling of the floating slab as well as the replacement of the springs with springs of other load capacities possible and easy. Slab construction and the installation of the springs are very simple. Beside of a bond-breaking plastic layer, there is usually no need for any bottom formwork. The slab is lifted directly from the substructure after the concrete has gained its design strength. The jack-up and adjustment facilities are an integrated part in every element. The elements can be equipped with a damping system in order to stabilize the floating slab and to further improve the attenuation capacity at higher frequencies. In order to achieve uniform spring deflections, elements of different type and loading capacity can be combined in a system layout to allow for different slab loadings. Their height usually determines the acoustic gap below the floating slab. They offer the following features: Supporting spring elements are the most economic solution for spring supported floating floors. For supporting spring units, too, a broad range of different types of springs is available to provide system natural frequencies as low as 2.5 to 7 Hz resulting in excellent vibration and structure borne noise isolation starting from frequencies as low as 4 Hz.
