Summary of the project s expected climate, community and biodiversity benefits Since the project start date, in the period covered by this document (PIR), hectares of riparian forests have been planted in nine properties in the municipality of Santa Cruz do Xingu, in the state of Mato Grosso. The restored areas are in process of development, some with bulky plant formations, generating already climate benefits. The restored areas are not yet being monitored regarding the CO 2 capturing, which will occur after the fifth year, but are already contributing to the water protection and hence to the rainfall and climate regimes. It also benefits biodiversity trough forest fragments connectivity. From the Social standpoint, in addition to training employers from the nine farms directly involved in the project, the seeds demand strengthens the Rede de Sementes do Xingu. The Xingu Headwaters Carbon Project alone consumed 14,571 kilos of seeds and generated R$ 232,000 of revenue for the collectors Indigenous and small farmers, mostly women. The project also encouraged the creation of the Sustainable Xingu

2 Association, formed by farmers involved in the project, which strengthen themselves in the pursuit of their interests and qualify them respect carbon projects. x. 4 The Project Implementation Report of the Xingu Headwaters Carbon project is being submitted together with the Xingu Headwaters Carbon project PDD, in such a way that the majority of the indicators presented in the PDD did not change. Therefore, this document focuses primarily on the activities that were implemented in the nine properties involved and the results that have been already achieved. The project submitted for validation and verification is the Xingu s Headwaters Carbonproject, which is part of the PoA Xingu. Although other forest restoration activities have been undertaken under the PoA Xingu, it had not yet been validated and such activities were not subject to any audit. Therefore, the Xingu s Headwaters Carbon project, a partnership between InstitutoSocioambiental - ISA, Associação Xingu Sustentável - AXS, Instituto Centro de Vida ICV and Natura, can be seen as the first CPA subject to verification under the PoA Xingu. As stated in the PDD, all eligibility criteria are met in the project areas. Aiming to ensure the success of restoration activities in accordance with the submitted project and with the activities used in other plantations carried by ISA within the 'Y Ikatu Xingu Initiative, the restored areas are monitored every year, evaluating the necessity for enrichment and/or replanting. Then, the monitoring report presents a schedule of activities for corrections and its execution timetable. The restorations were implanted in the nine properties during the rainy season of 2012/2013 and 2013/2014, which runs from November to March. A 38.6 ha.area was implemented in three properties in 2012/2013 and the remaining hectares has been implemented in the rainy season of2013/2014. Once the Xingu s Headwaters Carbon project is part of the 'Y Ikatu Xingu Initiative, project activities do not differ from other activities carried out daily by the Initiative. The only difference in this project is that the financial resources come from a company interested in purchasing carbon credits, which generates greater complexity in terms of contracts, guarantees, monitoring, etc. In the Initiative, stakeholders have access to all information and activities through the various meetings that happen periodically in different parts of the Xingu basin and through the Rede de Sementes do Xingu ( and the InstitutoSocioambientalweb pages ( as well as their respective social media. Project impacts are all positive, and the periodic meetings of the Rede de Sementes do Xingu are the appropriate forum to discuss relevant issues about forest restoration and related activities in general, and about the Xingu Headwaters Carbon project, in particular. Since the beginning of the project, three general meetings of the Rede do Xingu occurred, where the project was discussed with all stakeholders.

5 As detailed in the PDD, there are no adverse impacts on the identified stakeholder groups nor in the surrounding communities. Rather, the project generates many economic, social and environmental positive impacts and externalities. Likewise, the high conservation value attributes are maintained and/or enhanced by the project - forest restoration, creating ecological corridors, water production, habitat for biodiversity, preservation of traditional communities livelihoods, among others. Still, in accordance with the precautionary principle, trainings performed with the seed collectors that sell to the Rede de Sementes do Xingu in order for them to collect better and with minimal impact. This training includes monitoring methods of fruiting, search, collection, cleaning, processing and storage of seeds, among others. The climate net benefits resulting from the project implementation are measured every five years, according to the methodology detailed in the PDD. The first monitoring for carbon accounting will occur in Although no accounting has been done yet, according to the allometric equations used in the project, it is estimated that through the end of 2014 about 3,000 tons of CO 2 equivalent should be capturing in the 9 farms. The Rede de Sementes do Xingu sold 22 tons of seeds in 2013, generating total revenues of R$ 326,000. The Xingu s Headwaters Carbon Project consumed 14,571 kilos of seeds and generated R$ 232,000 of revenue for the collectors. Therefore, the Xingu s Headwaters Carbon project was responsible alone for 66.2% of seed transactions in 2013 and for 71.2% of the revenue generated in the same year. The replacement of agricultural areas for riparian forests undertaken by this project increases natural habitat areas along rivers and naturally creates ecological corridors for biodiversity among deforested areas, enhancing the potential for biological connectivity between the High Conservation Value Areas present in the region. Increased vegetation cover along rivers should also contribute to the water temperature and brightness, with positive impacts on aquatic life, at least for those under the direct influence of the project. The prevention of fires actions undertaken by farmers participating in the project also contribute to the maintenance of the High Conservation Value Attributes, as well as those held by ISA and other partners of the 'Y Ikatu Xingu Initiative in indigenous lands and small producers land in the region ( Until now it has not been seen any negative impact on biodiversity resulting from the project, and this is not expected indeed. Project activities generate positive externalities on biodiversity, and since we are reforesting riparian forests, with several High Conservation Value attributes, project activities themselves tend to maintain and enhance these attributes. During 2013 and 2014 all areas were monitored and correction actions have been suggested and implemented when necessary. This is the ISA s standard procedure to the reforested areas within the Y Ikatu Xingu Initiative, whereby the restored areas development are carefully monitored during the first 3 years. After this period it is considered that the vegetation has the

6 conditions to develop with fewer interventions. All the monitoring and implementation reports are attached to the PIR.
