3 Content 1.THE ORIGIN OF THE SCHOOL ENGINEERING During the eighteenth century, the first teaching centres for engineering were set up, contrasting with the fact of being the engineering a practical activity. In France, the first experiences in civil engineering were experienced. In the Borbonic Spain, the army and the navy also set up schools of engineering. 2.THE CREATION OF INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING IN SPAIN. THE BARCELONA INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL, FIRST TIMES ( ) In early nineteenth century, several centres were created for promoting the industrial technology. In 1850, a royal decree established the industrial engineering. The School of Barcelona was created in It was not recognized as higher school until THE SOLITUDE OF THE SCHOOL. RECOGNITION OF THE INDUSTRIAL ENGINEERING ( ) With the crises of the 1860s, the system of industrial engineering set up in 1850 fell down. Only the school of Barcelona managed to continue. Being the only one in Spain, the School of Barcelona got a relevant prestige as teaching centre and the industrial engineers achieved its recognition as profession. 4.FOR AN INDUSTRIAL UNIVERSITY. PROJECTS AND TENSIONS ( ) Included in the new promotion of industrial education, in 1904 an Industrial School or University was set up. The School of Industrial Engineering lasted several decades to join this new project. 3 / 5

4 5.A TIME OF GREAT TRANSFORMATIONS (1939- PRESENT) During the Francoism, a stagnation took place, but the economic changes of the 1950s promoted the industrial engineering. Within the democracy, a polytechnic university has been consolidated in Barcelona.
