Deciding how to carry out a task, the amount of time to be devoted to it and the most suitable information sources. Teaching methodology The teaching methodology varies depending on whether it is theoretical (large group) or practical (small group) classes. In the theoretical classes, teachers will introduce the general knowledge related to the basic matter. They will try to motivate and involve the students to participate actively in their learning. Learning objectives of the subject It is intended that students acquire all necessary knowledge and enough skills in biological techniques related to learn the main aspects about plant tissue culture, genetic engineering and other biotechnological tools. To apply in a practical way microprogation techniques, DNA extraction, PCR determination and electrophoresis techniques. 3 BIOTECHNOLOGY APPLIED TO PLANT GENETIC ENGINEERING Learning time: 8h Theory classes: 3h Self study : 5h Plant Genetic Engineering: Biotechnological methods in plant breeding. A brief theoretical explanation of each techniquewill be done. Related variability analysis techniques will be explained (molecular markers, bioinformatics, genomics... ). Techniques related to the generation of new variability will also be studied (transgenics, Tilling and Ecotilling, CRISPR / Cas9... ). Legislation. 4 Planning of activities ACTIVITAT 1: CLASSES D'EXPLICACIÓ TEÒRICA Hours: 93h Theory classes: 38h Self study: 55h The teachers, through all the methods available in the classroom, expose the general knowledge related to the basic concepts of the subject. In most cases sessions last two hours. Therefore it is necessary to seek motivation and participation involving students who actively participate in their learning. The material imparted is current, changing and not exempt from controversy, ethics and / or morality, which in no case should be avoided. Support materials: All material available in the classroom, such as computer connected to projector, Internet connection, audiovisual material, blackboard, etc. (ENG) ACTIVITAT 2: PROVES INDIVIDUALS D'AVALUACIÓ Hours: 2h Theory classes: 2h The evaluation will be related to the theoretical and practical contents. The capabilities of the students to learn by themselves will be also evaluated. (ENG) ACTIVITAT 3: PRÀCTIQUES DE LABORATORI Hours: 41h Laboratory classes: 16h Self study: 25h There will be six sessions of laboratory practices. Tree of them will be to acquire skills in vitro plant and other three will be linked to the extraction of DNA, PCR, and electrophoresis techniques from plants incolated with microorganisms. Support materials: Binoculars. Laminar flow chamber. Environment controled chamber. Thermocycler. Transilluminator. Various consumables. Specific objectives: To learn applied biotechnology techniques. At the end of the activity, the student will be able to know the factors involved in plant tissue cultur, and to apply a PCR thecnique to characterize the microorganismes involved in plant interactions. (ENG) ACTIVITAT 4: VISITA Hours: 14h Laboratory classes: 4h Self study: 10h A private company will be visited. It uses biotechnology as a tool for saving time and making varietal improvements 4 / 5
