Biography Started site prep business in December 2005 Three dozers and a shear/bed contract with Weyerhaeuser Timberlands 2007 started offset ripping and shearing/bedding Today, nine tractors ranging from D6 to D8 Three Savannah four-disk bedding plows Five offset rippers Work for several different timber companies in Arkansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and Louisiana
Mechanical Site Preparation The purposes of mechanical site prep are: To reduce the competition of unwanted vegetation in order to increase the survival and growth rate of the desired trees To removed slash and logging debris for tree planting To prepare or modify the soil to increase chance of successful seedling establishment Ultimately, you want to provide better light, nutrients, and moisture to make conditions favorable for germination, survival, and growth of you trees
Shearing Piling or Raking Site Prep Techniques 3 in 1 Combination Bedding or Plowing Sub-soiling Offset or Single Shank Ripping Site prep prescriptions are based on a tract by tract basis that evaluates existing competition, logging debris, and soil type.
Shearing Shearing is where a dozer pushes a V-blade across the ground shearing off all stumps, brush, and saplings left over from final harvest/timber sale, reducing logging debris and competition Depending on size/number of stumps and amount of debris, this process will either be performed with a D6 or D8 size machine Shearing is the first technique of the process followed by piling/raking or bedding This technique is to be performed with the contour of the land reducing erosion

Piling or Raking Piling is a recommended technique on tracts with an abundance of debris and left over hardwood vegetation Piling is usually done with a D6 size machine by mounting a brush rake to the front of a dirt blade and raking the debris into long windrows leaving a pasture-like setting for bedding/plowing The remaining neatly rowed piles of debris can either be burned or left for wildlife habitat

3 in 1 Combination Bedding/Plowing D6 size machine will pull a Savannah bedding plow equipped with a coulter wheel to cut roots and split the sheared off stumps Ripper shank to loosen compacted soils 18 to 24 inches below the ground surface Four 36 inch disks used to furrow the soil Plowing is used to loosen heavy soils and to elevate the seedlings in wet sites On elevated tracts, plowing is performed with the contour of the land Plowing increases seedling survival, growth rates and site index

Sub-soiling Offset Ripping Depending on the amount of debris, ripping can be performed after shearing or be performed as a technique by itself (dirty rip) Ripping loosens heavy compacted soils providing tillage and capturing additional rain runoff Performed by a shank or shanks being pulled by a dozer, 18 to 24 inches below the ground surface Ripping is performed on tracts with greater topography, shallow hardpans, or rocky sites *Offset ripping will provide greater cultivated area and tillage compared to single shank ripping but is limited to amount of logging debris and weather conditions

Prices by the acre range from: Site Prep Cost Shearing - $ to $ Piling/Raking - $ Bedding/Plowing - $75.00 to $ Offset ripping - $ to $ Shear/Pile/Bed - $ to $450.00
Variable Cost Cost of prescriptions are based on chosen technique, row spacing, the amount of debris and if the tract has been burnt Site prep cost will fluctuate with the price of off-road fuel Site prep cost will fluctuate with volume of work, site condition, and productivity for contractor Prices do not include additional fees for moving: overweight permits, trip permits, fuel cost, or traveling expenses
