Reducing the impact of marine litter in the form of derelict fishing gear in the Baltic Sea
Operations at Sea DFG search strategies 1. Sonar data of German Hydrographic Survey provided by BSH/Uni Kiel 2. Fisheries control authority 3. Clearing area Ahlbeck 4. Estonian Hook Navama, WWF
1. Sidescan sonar Location: Odrabank Sonar data of German Hydrographic Survey provided by BSH/Uni Kiel Navama, WWF
1. Sidescan sonar Location: Odrabank 1000 khz 400 khz BSH/Uni Kiel
1. Sidescan sonar Location: Odrabank Driving pattern of fishing vessel Marked sonar position Centered on structure 1000 khz 400 khz BSH/Uni Kiel
1. Sidescan sonar - Tests Location: Odrabank Technical equipment was provided by BfN to check if net material is present at the sonar locations BSH/Uni Kiel Towed camera system StarFish 400 khz Sidescan Sonar (ROV) Scientific diving team
1. Sidescan sonar - Results Location: Odrabank No nets were found A Stone wall was present at the location of the structure Divers confirmed rocks and smaller stones observed in a long hump Small-scale structures observed on the StarFish sonar corresponded to sand ripples Obstacles: Visibility was < 1.5m StarFish did not redetect the extended structures ROV was limited in manoeverability Towed camera was most useful to evaluate seafloor
2. Fisheries Control Authority Location: Ahlbeck, Rostock Two most efficient ways to find nets so far: Net locations known by Divers Net losses known by Fisheries control
3. Clearing Area Ahlbeck Location: Ahlbeck to PL border Total area provided by fisheries control: 650m x 2400m = 1.5 km 2 Scanned approx so far: 0.5 km 2 Method used: Fishing vessel & net fork Diver to mark nets with bouyes
4. Estonian Hook & Gillnetter density Location: Greifswalder Bodden, Rostock Previous randomised search in high-density trawl fishing areas did not result in net findings (250kg) Fishermen tell us that trawls are not easily lost anymore & they do all they can to retrieve them Situation is different with gillnets: Sportboats and wind break nets, which can lead to loss of fragments => Search in dense gillnet areas
Plans for Summer 2017 Extend locations to Rostock, Greifswalder Bodden (to be clarified with nature protection office) Try small-scale fishing vessels with Estonian hook to retrieve gillnets Wrecks with WWF PL/Uni Szczecin 6 wrecks cleared with cultural heritage office Permission from BSH not a problem
Recycling Update WP4 Lead partner: WWF Germany
Recycling 1. step: shredding of material The Problem: Dirty Material is mixed Metals/cables need to be removed Lead weights are hazardous waste Blades become bland quickly with ropes and nets
Recycling 1. step: shredding of material Specialised grinding rotators Sieves with 25mm wholes Nets & ropes treated separately
Recycling 1. step: shredding of material
Recycling 2. step: Density separation in saline solution High-density saline solution with 1.15 g/cm 3 Plastics & organic polymers float Metal residue & sediments sink
Recycling 2. step: Density separation in saline solution High-density saline solution with 1.15 g/cm 3 Plastics & organic polymers float Metal residue & sediments sink Plain water with 1.00 g/cm 3 Nylon sinks PP & PE floats
Recycling 3. step: Washing & drying Friction washer: 2 discs move against each other Material is channeled through the slit Fine material < 2.5mm is filtered out Coarser material is slightly pre-dried
Recycling 3. step: Washing & drying Fibres remain a challenge:
Recycling 3. step: Washing & drying If all goes well...
gentlemanrook Recycling Next steps 4. step: Pelletising Material testing & chemical analysis If material is sufficiently pure & formable: Melting into granules Granules can re-enter the production process Any suggestions welcome!
