The Nelson Environmental OPTAER system is an efficient pond-based wastewater treatment solution utilized in a broad spectrum of applications. OPTAER projects range from municipal and industrial wastewater treatment to storm water and airport deicing fluid treatment. In comparison to conventional mechanical treatment facilities, the OPTAER process maintains the operational simplicity of a lagoon system, but is typically 40% less costly to construct. Long-term operation and maintenance costs of the OPTAER process can be 50% less than those of a conventional mechanical plant. Aside from financial benefits, the documented performance of the OPTAER system makes it a reliable solution for achieving high effluent quality and meeting increasingly stringent wastewater effluent regulations. The sludge digestion capability of the OPTAER process results in minimal long term solids accumulation, extending the design life of the lagoons and allowing longer operation prior to de-sludging. The Nelson Environmental OPTAER system has proven to be a reliable, highly efficient and cost-effective wastewater solution, demonstrated by successful implementation in projects across Canada and the United States.
The OPTAER system utilizes either new or existing lagoons to provide: Ammonia Removal (cold and moderate climates) Total Nitrogen Removal CBOD Removal TSS Removal Phosphorus Removal Algae Control/pH Stabilization Total Coli form, Fecal Coli form, E.coli Reduction The OPTAER system is flexible and can be adapted to meet a wide range of effluent requirements and existing pond configurations. Nelson Environmental Inc. provides long term cost effective, ecologically friendly wastewater treatment through: Process Design Equipment Supply Installation and Commissioning Turn Key Systems Maintenance Services
The OPTAER System meets a wide spectrum of effluent quality requirements by incorporating some or all of the following technologies and processes: OPTAER Aerated Complete Mix Ponds OPTAER Aerated Partial Mix Ponds Anoxic Ponds Flow Optimization Baffles Floating Cover Systems SAGR (Submerged Attached Growth Reactors) Chemical Phosphorous Precipitation Continuous Backwash Sand Filters Cloth Disk Filters The OPTAER fine bubble aeration system provides excellent operational flexibility as each diffuser can operate in an airflow range between 5 to 25 SCFM. The airflow can be adjusted to accommodate variable load conditions and provide cost effective future upgrades to increase capacity.
A Reduce CBOD, TSS, TP levels to less than 10/10/0.1 mg/l Aerated Aerated Tertiary Chemical B Reduce CBOD, TSS, TP, Total Ammonia to less than 5/5/0.1/1 mg/l Aerated Aerated Tertiary Chemical C Reduce CBOD, TSS and TP levels to less than 5/5/0.1 mg/l and Total Ammonia and TN levels to 1/7 mg/l Addition The OPTAER System can be modified to upgrade existing pond based wastewater facilities to meet specific effluent requirements.
TREATMENT PROCESS The primary purpose of the OPTAER process is to provide oxygen as well as residence and contact time to natural bacteria, which ultimately convert the wastewater contaminates (CBOD, ammonia and TSS) to carbon dioxide, water, inert ash, and nitrates. Aerated ponds effectively control odors and provide internal sludge digestion. ODOR CONTROL Aerated ponds in the OPTAER process produce no nuisance odors when the system is operated within the specified design parameters. If anoxic ponds are included within the treatment process, odors can be controlled by the use of floating covers. CBOD REDUCTION CBOD is reduced to carbon dioxide, water, and inert ash by natural bacteria, which receive their oxygen supply from air provided through the OPTAER aeration diffusers. The aeration bubbles not only provide oxygen but also mix the water, ensuring aerobic conditions throughout the water body. The small-sized bubbles produced by the air diffusers result in high total surface area per volume of air introduced into the system. This, combined with the slow rate of bubble rise, increases the overall oxygen transfer efficiency of the system. SUSPENDED SOLIDS REMOVAL The aeration diffusers are placed at or near the lagoon bottom. Through the rise of bubbles and subsequent mixing, convection cells are created between the diffusers. Not only does the water rise with bubbles, the solids settle out through the downward motion of the water between the diffusers where the circulation loop is completed. The mixing rate is reduced in the secondary cells to minimize turbulence and facilitate additional suspended solids removal. Covered cells are used to control algae to meet stringent suspended solid limits. In addition, gravity sand filters or cloth disk filters can be used for final suspended solids removal.
SLUDGE REDUCTION The OPTAER system has attributes of a mechanical wastewater treatment plant with aerobic and anaerobic sludge digestion. Oxygen provided by the OPTAER diffuser allows for aerobic digestion at the sludge-water interface. Further, long term sludge digestion occurs under anaerobic conditions within the settled sludge layer. The environmental impact and cost of sludge removal and disposal can be minimized with the OPTAER system due to minimal organic bottom sludge accumulation. The low sludge production also retains the pond retention time required for long term CBOD removal. AMMONIA REMOVAL PROCESS (Cold and Moderate Climates) Ammonia Removal is achieved with the SAGR (Submerged Attached Growth Reactor), a novel technology designed specifically for cold water nitrification. The SAGR process is ideally suited for post lagoon applications, but can also be utilized for nitrification following any secondary treatment process. The SAGR consists of a specifically graded, aerated coarse gravel bed designed to cultivate and maintain nitrifying bacteria, while providing optimum dissolved oxygen levels for high treatment efficiency. Flow is distributed by gravity across the front of the SAGR with an influent distribution chamber system. A full grid of LINEAR aeration throughout the floor of the SAGR provides aerobic conditions that are required for nitrification. Full year-round nitrification is achieved, even in severe cold to moderate climates, where water temperatures can reach 0.5 o C for extended periods of time. TOTAL NITROGEN REMOVAL Total nitrogen removal is achieved by one or more of the following methods: Final effluent recycle to a primary anoxic pond Carbon addition in conjunction with a gravity sand filter PHOSPHOROUS REMOVAL Phosphorous removal is achieved through one or more of the following methods: Chemical precipitation in the settling pond, followed by filtration Chemical addition prior to tertiary sand filters.
