3 Green Jobs Action Team Established in response to the Power to Live Green: Toronto s Sustainable Energy Strategy and the Green Economic Sector Development Strategy Mandate: Make more jobs green and help create more green jobs Scope of Work: Foster the development of green businesses Assist in providing a skilled workforce for the green sector Assist industry to green their operations Market Toronto as a recognized centre for the green economy attract green investment
4 Green Jobs & the Greening of Jobs Green Greening Jobs of Jobs Work with the defined green sector stakeholders to identify where the challenges are and find the best leverage points for the City to act Challenge of defining what is a green sector or job 4 Green touching jobs i.e. Building managers that need training to operate new green building operations Focus in this area may be on providing additional training to existing trade/skill categories

7 Current Work Plan Focused on 4 strategic areas: 1. Greentech Incubation Fostering innovation and entrepreneurship 2. Greentech Alliances Creating links between industry, academia and other stakeholders 3. Green Jobs Framework Using the Tower Renewals Workforce Challenges & Opportunities Report as a template for other green initiatives 4. Greening of Jobs Replicating Partners in Project Green in other Employment Zones 7
8 #1 Greentech Incubation A couple of green tech incubation projects are in early discussions Working with industry and academia on a centre of excellence at the Celestica site at Don Mills & Eglinton Toronto Business Development Centre and MaRS
9 #2 Greentech Alliances Creating stronger links between industry, academia, other stakeholders and the City Create networks where ideas, knowledge and expertise can be shared A number of sub-sectors Green Energy Electric Vehicles Green Buildings 4 more to be identified this year First meeting with Green Energy industry was held Jan 19 A t t f T t G E Alli hi h Agreement to form a Toronto Green Energy Alliance which will take forward actions identified at the forum
10 #3 Green Jobs Framework Tower Renewals Workforce Challenges & Opportunities Report Identified for a typical renewal project: the type of work, the jobs, skill sets, number of full time equivalents, hours and net wages Develop a framework/model to be able to assess the jobs and skills required for a number of City environmental initiatives Identify courses at Toronto based academic institutions to identify gaps Also to identify gaps in the local supply chain that could be filled
11 #3 Green Jobs Framework con t Partnership with ED&C and TEO Toronto Urban Fellow started in October 2010, final report in April 2011 Initiatives being assessed: Eco-roofs incentive program and bylaw PV on City facilities (2MW) Home Energy Assistance Toronto (HEAT) program
12 #3 Green Jobs Framework con t Where are we now: Background research completed, including scan of training programs Beginning g to consult with companies and industry associations to check research findings Final report will include a methodology to allow this to be replicated for other initiatives
13 #4 Greening of Jobs Background Green Economic Development Strategy identified developing a Sustainable Employment District pilot project City supported the creation of Partners in Project Green the Pearson Eco-Business Zone Established in 2008 this program has been very successful in working with companies to improve their bottom line through sustainable business practices
