4 Course Syllabus Session 1: Basic Geology The building blocks that make up gas and oil formations are the result of hundreds of millions of years of geologic evolution. The processes that led to their existence have played out over a span of geologic time that is difficult to even imagine. Gain an understanding of the earth forces that led to the basins we rely on for shale and a variety of fossil fuels. Session 2: Oil and Gas Formation Geology led to the creation of basins capable of producing oil and gas, but the process is not complete without some major chemical changes. These changes occur naturally in the earth but only at temperatures and pressures capable of breaking long chain hydrocarbons into shorter chain gas and oil. Learn Mother Nature s recipe and see how the very source of organic content can affect the outcome. Session 3: Exploration and Plays Most with an interest in shale have heard names like Barnett, Haynesville, and Marcellus. We ll explore how petroleum engineers and geologists find such formations or plays? The reserve estimates are phenomenal and continue to grow. In fact, over the last five years the change in recoverable gas is nothing less than transformational to world economies. Session 4: Drilling and Fracturing Vertical drilling, horizontal drilling, and hydraulic fracturing are all key to the success of shale gas production. Are these technologies new? Actually no but it has only been in the past decade that the environment has been right to allow extensive experimentation, implementation and refinement of these methodologies in order to successfully advance shale gas production. Learn the steps and see what a difference just a few years have made. Session 5: Gas Processing and Transportation Now that we understand the creation of shale gas and the production methodology to extract it, we must process it for quality purposes and bring it to market. This session will look at the basic steps required to make pipeline grade natural gas and the distribution system used in North America. The natural gas industry serves many different consumers including utilities, commercial and industrial users, as well as residential customers that we will explore. Session 6: Environmental Issues Much has been written about the impact of shale gas production on the environment, but how do you sort fact from fiction? Is ground water affected by hydrofracking? Does the production process cause methane gas to build up in water supplies? What about the waste water from the process? We ll explore these issues and try to form a logical base of understanding that can be used to evaluate future studies and claims. Session 7: Shale Oil While the focus of the course is shale-derived natural gas, we cannot ignore the fact that many shale formations produce nonconventional oil in conjunction with gas. In fact some plays are more oil prone than gas. It makes sense to take a brief look at this aspect of the industry and the plays and processes making headlines today. Session 8: Gas Market Implications What moves natural gas prices? How are overall market values established? Where is natural gas traded? These and other topics will be addressed as we look at the changing financial side of the market. Just a few years ago natural gas peaked at record high price levels and the industry was abuzz with the prospect of importing liquefied natural gas. Today the situation is vastly different with talk of the U.S. as a potential exporter. Will increased supply lead to increased demand and higher prices, or will a glut of product depress overall market values? Session 9: Why Shale Gas, Why Now There is a new paradigm in conventional oil; one that is increasingly subject to the whims of tyrannical and fanatical world leaders. The market has experienced upward pressure and intense volatility that seems to have established itself as the new norm. Can the North America s economies continue to weather the burden of being dependent on so much foreign oil? This section will examine the factors causing such great interest in moving toward domestic energy supplies. Session 10: Evaluating the Alternatives If our objective is to move toward more domestically sourced energy supplies, how do we know shale gas is the right direction? What types of energy policy have been explored to accomplish this goal? Which alternatives have been approved for use by the government? What are the most logical choices? This last session will touch on these issues and search for answers.
