3 The Company The Polisan brand is widely known in glue and paint sectors. The name is derived from polyvinyl acetate (PVA) glue and the word sanayi (Turkish for industry). The founders of the company, the Bitlis family, started commercial operations in the 1920s as a merchandising firm until the establishment of a fabric painting and knitting business called Şark Mensucat. In 1964, they entered the chemicals industry with the foundation of Polisan Chemical, which produced emulsifier resins. In 1985, paint production had begun under the Polisan brand. With annual production capacity of tonnes when first established, Polisan now boast tonnes on a total production area of m 2. Polisan offers the widest range of products appealing to all price segments in the decorative paint market with more than 250 ownbranded products in addition to package and colour options. Elegance premium interior paint is the market leader in its segment. With the Turkey s first equivalent to oil-based paint, its waterbased gloss-finishing coat sealed Polisan s environmental and innovative credentials. Polisan has ISO 9001, ISO 10002, ISO 14001, ISO and ISO standards certifications. Polisan developed the sector s first water-based mixing machine offering retail customers the same quality as factory production and developed the sector s first interior paint with 7 superior properties and exterior paint with 9 superior properties. 4 Statement This study is conducted according to the guidelines of ISO 14040/44 and the requirements given in the Product Category Rules (PCR) document for Construction Products and CPC 54 Construction Services (Version 2.0, ) with reference to EN and the general program guidelines by The International EPD System. The inventory for the LCA study is based on the 2012 production figures for Elegans Extra Semi- Matt internal paints from Polisan s main production plant in Kocaeli, Turkey. This LCA was modelled with SimaPro LCA package using the latest version of the Ecoinvent database and impact factors. 4

5 Product Specifications ELEGANS EXTRA SEMI MATT Paint is composed of pigments, solvents, resins, and various additives. The pigments give the paint colour; solvents make it easier to apply; resins help it dry; and additives serve as everything from fillers to incan protective agents. Hundreds of different pigments, both natural and synthetic, exist. Cadmium Sulphide, used as pigments, is identified according to the procedure described in Article 59(1) of the REACH Regulation which establishes the Candidate List for Substances of Very High Concern but its use is very small (less than 0.04%). The amount of Cadmium Sulphide is lower than danger level. 5

6 Production Process Manufacturing process of paint products can be seen below. Raw materials and water are fed into the high speed mixer and mixed by 5-10 minutes. During dispersion process, pigments and fillers are added into the mixer and mixed with rpm. After homogenous mix is prepared during the dispersion process binders, anti-foaming agents, antibacterial agents, antifreezing agents are added into the mixture and the production is completed after mixing 3-5 minutes. After the quality control is done, the products are transfered into the kettle for colouring or storage tank to be filled. The products that are transfered into the kettle are coloured with suitable colouring pigments. At the end of the colouring process the products are brought to the packaging process and transfered into the despatched. Interior paint products (Natura Ambians and Elegans SemiMatt) are produced under the standard of TS 5808 Paints and varnishes Water based coating materials and coating systems for use in interior walls and ceilings and exterior paint products (Exelans Macro and Natura A1 Silicone) are produced under the standard of TS 7847 Paints and plasters Coating materials and coating systems for exterior masonry and concrete. 6

7 System Boundary The system boundary covers the production of raw materials, all relevant transport down to factory gate and manufacturing by Polisan (cradle to gate) and disposal. The review framework comprises the following details: Raw materials acquisition and transport, Further processing of raw materials for paint products, Production operations includes dispersion, storage, tinting, filling the paints into the cans, Energy and water consumption, waste management; and Packaging of the product final for delivery; and Disposal The system boundary of the LCA study conducted on the interior and exterior paint products is shown in below by the dotted lines including packaging of the final product for delivery and landfilling as disposal. Due to same manufacturing process, the system boundary depicted below is relevant for each product group. 8 LCA Results Upstream Processes (A1: Raw Material Supply) In this report, for each product group production starts with raw materials, transported locally and from other parts of the world. (A1). Raw Materials Supply also includes manufacturing of plastic paint bucket. Core Processes (A2: Transportation and A3: Manufacturing) Transport is relevant for delivery of raw materials to the plant and internal transport. (A2). Production stages start with dispersion of raw materials followed by storage tank, tinting, filling into the cans and packaging for final delivery. There was not natural gas consumption. Only electric energy is consumed during the manufacturing of paint products (A3). Downstream Processes (C4: Disposal) All paint products end up at landfill as their final fate and modelled as such in this LCA. There is no open loop recycling in the manufacturing. Packaging waste is assumed to end up at packaging recycling streams due to national law, which requires manufacturers to have at least 44% of their packaging waste to be recovered (C4). Benefits and loads beyond the product system boundary in information (Module D) No possible benefits of recycling and re-use were taken into account in the LCA work here. 9 LCA Calculation Rules Functional Unit/Declared Unit The declared unit is the production of 1 kg of Elegans Semi-Matt Interior Paint (1.54 kg/l, 4.5 m2/l for double coat). Goal and Scope This EPD evaluates the environmental impacts of 1 kg of interior paint products from cradle to gate with disposal. System Boundaries The system boundary covers A1 A3 product stages referred as Raw material supply, Transport and Manufacturing and C4 as Disposal. Estimates and Assumptions There are no additional product scenarios developed for this EPD. However, very small amount of packaging waste for paints are modelled based on the 44% collection rate enforced by law in Turkey at the time. Cut- Off Rules All raw materials that are constituent of the paint products are included in this study. Therefore, cut-off criteria were not applied. Background Data Ecoinvent database were used as generic background data source. Data Quality Raw materials, electricity, water use and waste data were collected from Polisan. Localized data developed by Metsims based on Ecoinvent database were used where relevant. Period Under Rewiew All primary data collected from Polisan s plant is for the period year of Primary datasets were produced in SimaPro using these data. Necessary background data (secondary data) relevant to life cycle stages were taken from the Ecoinvent database. Allocations There are no co-products in the production of Interior paint products. Hence, there is no need for co-product allocation. Polisan sources raw materials from different locations across the world and by different means of transport (truck and ship). For this reason, transport is allocated according to tonnages for almost all raw materials bought by Polisan. No allocation is done for energy and water consumption during the production of Elegans Extra Semi-Matt Exterior Paint Products. Comparability A comparison or an evaluation of EPD data is only possible where EN has been followed, and the same building context and product-specific characteristics of performance are taken into account and the same stages have been included in the system boundary. According to EN 15804, EPD of construction products may not be comparable if they do not comply with this standard. All the waste resulting from the main production and related processes of Polisan is managed in accordance with valid legal requirements. 9

10 Environmental Impacts Indicators for the Life Cycle Inventory Analysis as per EN The results of the LCA with the indicators as per EPD requirement are given in the following tables for product manufacture (A1, A2, A3) and disposal (C4). The system boundaries in tabular form for all modules are shown in the table above. All energy calculations were obtained using Cumulative Energy Demand methodology, while fresh water use is calculated with the Pfister et al 2009 (Water Scarcity) V1.01 within SimaPro. 12 Environmental Interpretations Below figure shows the impacts of life cycle stages for 1 kg Elegans Extra Semi-Matt Interior Paint. Analogous to the all other impact categories, raw materials supply (A1) represents the life cycle stage with the biggest impact. The GWP of raw materials supply is 97.5%, while end of life has about 0.9% of the total carbon emissions followed by transport with 0.8% of the impact. The ODP impact of of 1 kg Elegans Semi- Matt Interior Paint manufactured by Polisan 1.69E-07 kg CFC11 eq. Raw materials supply has about 98.2% of the photochemical oxidation impacts, followed by transportation and end of life, with about 0.77% and 0.51%, respectively. The photochemical oxidation impact of 1 kg Elegans Semi-Matt Interior Paint manufactured by Polisan is 1.26E-03 kg C2H4 eq. Acidification impact of raw material supply is about 97.3%, while that of transportation is around 1.29%, followed by 0.76% from end of life. The acidification impact of 1 kg Elegans Semi-Matt Interior Paint manufactured by Polisan is 2.30E-02 kg SO2 eq. by this cost. Eutrophication is dominated by the raw materials supply (94.3%) followed by manufacturing (3.12%) and end of life (1.3%). The eutrophication impact of 1 kg Elegans Semi-Matt Interior Paint manufactured by Polisan is 3.35E-03 kg PO4--- eq. 12

The non-renewable fossil fuel has the highest impact from raw materials supply (99%) followed by manufacturing (0.7%). The non-renewable fossil impact of of 1 kg Elegans Semi-Matt Interior Paint manufactured by Polisan is 57.8 MJ eq. Below figure shows total energy consumption including fossil and non-fossil based energy sources. Raw material supply has the highest energy requirement with about 99.2% followed by 0.53% in manufacturing. Transport has about 0.28% energy demand.
