3 Introduction The Cathodic Protection Technologist (CP 3) essay exam is designed to assess whether a candidate has the requisite knowledge and skills that a minimally qualified Level 3 Cathodic Protection Technologist must possess. The exam consists of 3 essay questions that are based on the Cathodic Protection body of knowledge. A candidate should have theoretical concepts and practical application of cathodic protection (CP) with a strong focus on interpretation of CP field work, interpretation of CP data and troubleshooting. Test Name NACE- Cathodic Protection Technologist (CP 3) Essay Exam Test Code Time 2 1/2 hours Number of Questions 3 Format Paper/pencil NOTE: The CBT exam and the essay exam are scored separately and candidates must pass both exams. NOTE: The course manual is allowed in the exam. Note: Cathodic Protection Technologis (CP 3) essay exam is only given at the conclusion of the NACE Cathodic Protection Technologist Course. Separate arrangements should be made to take this portion of the exam should the candidate choose not to attne the full course. Target Audience A Cathodic Protection Technologist (CP 3) is responsible for observing, recording, and measuring the effectiveness of Cathodic Protection (CP) systems. This certification is geared towards persons who have a high level of working knowledge of CP systems and years of extensive field experience in CP. CP Technologist should have good understanding of mathematical procedures and scientific knowledge of corrosion processes. NOTE: There is NOT a direct progression from Cathodic Protection Technician (CP 2) to Cathodic Protection Technologist (CP3). Substantial experience involving all aspects of cathodic protection, including design and formal education in math/science/engineering is critical to student s success on this exam. Attendance in the Cathodic Protection Technician (CP 2) course is strongly recommended before attempting Cathodic Protection Technologist (CP 3). However, additional experience and education are also recommended. Exam Preparation Guide Mar

Sample Questions The sample questions are included to illustrate the formats and types of questions that will be on the exam. Your performance on the sample questions should not be viewed as a predictor of your performance on the actual test. 1. For the riveted water main example: If the anode run to location 2 (30 anodes) was fed by a AWG #4 cable connected into the middle of the run (i.e., 15 anodes in each direction), what would be the voltage applied to the last anode (furthest away) in this distributed groundbed if 1.0 V is applied at the midpoint? 10 2. Two coated pipelines (A & B) which parallel each other are electrically isolated from each other and have separate impressed current systems. Each company conducts a CP survey on their own pipeline with their own transformer-rectifier interrupted. The surveys are conducted one week apart and the data is recorded in the table below. You are asked to review the data to: a) identify any suspect problems and explain why you suspect a problem; b) outline what field tests might be done to investigate each suspected problem; c) recommend remedial measures as if each suspected problem was confirmed during testing.
