DuPont Nomex fibres are inherently resistant to degradation caused by many chemicals; the fibres successfully pass elbow lean tests in which the fabric is exposed to concentrated acid. Specially designed, laminated or coated DuPont Nomex fabrics are available where barrier protection against hazardous chemical penetration is required. EVEN THE SMALLEST SPARK CAN IGNITE CERTAIN VAPOURS OR GASES, ESPECIALLY WHEN TRAPPED, AND CAUSE AN EXPLOSION. THE IMPACT CAN BE DEVASTATING TO THE HUMAN BODY, NOT ONLY BY THE HEAT GENERATED, BUT ALSO BECAUSE OF THE UNLEASHED ENERGY AND PRESSURE WAVE. 6 THE CHARACTERISTICS OF DUPONT NOMEX DuPont Nomex is a meta-aramid fibre that derives its flame resistant properties from its specific structure of aromatic rings and conjugated amide bonds. As its thermal behaviour is obtained by its molecular structure and not by applying a flame retardant chemical substance to the fabric, yarn, fibre or polymer, DuPont Nomex offers you permanent protection, which cannot be washed out or worn away. >> ADDITIONAL STRENGTH AND STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY ALL DUPONT NOMEX PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT SOLUTIONS HAVE BEEN BLENDED WITH THE PARA-ARAMID FIBRE DUPONT KEVLAR, RESULTING IN A FIBRE WHICH PROVIDES ADDITIONAL STRENGTH AND STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY WHEN EXPOSED TO HEAT AND FLAME. But even today, because of the lower initial investment, flame-retardant-treated (FRT) cotton garments are still widely used, despite their lower protective characteristics. A chemical additive is needed in the fibre or fabric, to provide some level of flame retarding. During a fire, chemically treated fabrics rely on a chemical reaction to extinguish the flame. This reaction is triggered by the heat of the fire and the exposure time. The flame resistant properties of FR treated fabrics deteriorate during laundering when regular chlorine bleach is used or when hydrogen peroxide bleach is combined with hard water. Exposure to oxidizing chemicals in the workplace has a similar effect. Unfortunately, to the wearer of FRT garments, it s impossible to tell whether the flame-resistant properties are still uncompromised.
