5 4. Bottom ash is melted to make slag 3. Bottom ash is recycled as raw material for cement What does it mean to recycle bottom ash as raw material for cement? When combustible waste is incinerated, bottom ash and fly ash are generated. Among them, bottom ash, except for the portion which is melted to make slag, used to be disposed at the landfill along with fly ash processed with chemicals. However, currently we are making effort to utilize it as raw material for cement. "Cement raw material conversion" means to transport bottom ash to private cement factories by freight lorries, railway freight and ships in order to utilize bottom ash as a substitute raw material for clay, which is one of the raw materials for Portland Cement*. At Clean Authority of TOKYO, in FY 2013 we started verification and confirmation of the method of loading bottom ash from the incineration plant, safety of each transportation method, and compatibility as a raw material for cement. And, we started full-scale implementation from FY2015. The actual result of cement raw material production for FY2016, which is a combination of trial verification period and full-scale implementation, totaled approximately 11,000 tons. We intend to increase cement raw material production in stages, continuing to promote the reduction of landfill disposal volume and effective use of resources. * It is the most common general-purpose cement which accounts for about 70% of cement consumed in Japan. Raw materials for cement are limestone, clay, silicone, iron raw material and gypsum. Incineration plants use the heat energy generated from waste incineration beneficially in power generation and in supplying energy. Electricity and hot water produced at plants are used within facilities to operate the plant, thereby reducing electricity purchases and fuel costs. Surplus electricity is sold to power companies. All of the plants sell electricity, and four plants sell heat as hot water to other facilities. Sales performance in FY 2016 is shown in the table on the right ,000 * Based on the website of the electric power company 3,120 FY 2016* 1 Beneficial use of heat *1 From March 2016 to February 2017 for statistical reasons
