BeAAT [Central Environment Protection Facilities] An Overview of BeAAT Plant 2 nd Qatar-Japan Environment Symposium By Jassim Jawas Health Safety, Environment & Fire Department, Manager Ruwais Refinery, TAKREER Tuesday, 05 th February

PRESENTATION CONTENTS Purpose of BeAAT Plant. BeAAT Location BeAAT Processes BeAAT Waste Transfer Protocol

BeAAT An Overview The BeAAT Facility has been established : To safely receive, manage, treat and dispose hazardous waste generated by: ADNOC Group of Companies (18 entities) To ensure that human health and the environment are adequately protected

BeAAT Solidification (Unit 101) Solidification is a process that converts hazardous waste into physical and chemically stable product. The process is typically used to treat inorganic wastes containing heavy metals to convert them into a product suitable for Class 1 Landfill.

BeAAT Solidification (Unit 101) Decision criteria for disposal in Landfill Class I and/or Class II: TCLP-Test (c < D-list) Yield strength test > 5 N/mm2

BeAAT Centrifugation (Unit 102) Petroleum Hydrocarbon Sludge such as tank bottoms, API Separator sludge, desalter sludges and sludges generated from cleaning processes are dewatered through centrifugation.

BeAAT Centrifugation (Unit 102) Demulsifier Flocculant

BeAAT Thermal Desorption (Unit-103) Thermal desorption is used to treat the petroleum hydrocarbon sludge (PHC) from centrifugation as well as externally generated PHC sludges, tank cleaning sludges, filter clays and contaminated soil.

BeAAT Thermal Desorption (Unit 103) Target: Recovering oil from dewatered PHC sludge, drill cuttings from OPCOs and from Unit 102

BeAAT Incineration Unit (Unit-104) Various Organic wastes re-destroyed through incineration. The rotary kiln provides good operational flexibility and it can handle liquid waste, sludge's and solid wastes. Solids are fed through a feed chute by means of a ram feeder, while liquid waste and sludges are pumped into the system through liquid lances.

BeAAT Incineration (Unit 104) Target: For destruction of various groups of hazardous wastes such as organic liquids, aqueous wastes and solid wastes by using thermal energy. System is restricted to 5.4 MW of thermal load.

Physical-Chemical Treatment (Unit-105) This Unit neutralize acidic and alkaline waste. Liquid waste contains heavy metals, cyanides, fluorides and ammonium are also treated here Chemicals used: Acid, Caustic, Lime, Ferrous Sulphate and Sodium Hypo Chloride. Product and destination: neutralized Effluent slurry to solidification Unit Oil water Separation (Unit-108) This Unit separates oil, water, and solids from oily water. Chemicals used: Acid, Caustic, Coagulant and Flocculent. Product and destination: 1. Oil to recovered oil tank in tank farm 2. Water to process water tank for internal use 3. Sludge to incinerator.

BeAAT Mercury distillation (Unit 109) Treatment of HID lamps, fluorescent tubes and HgO-containing batteries

BeAAT HAZARDOUS WASTE LANDFILLS BeAAT Hazardous waste landfills are engineered landfills to US-EPA standards. The methods and materials used in the construction of the landfill assure its integrity. Stable hazardous wastes are deposited directly into onsite hazardous waste landfill. Water (called leachate, if any) that drips through the waste and is trapped by the impermeable layers of HDPE liner is then collected and treated onsite. Skilled personnel operate the landfill to international standards. The landfill liner system has many impermeable layers.

BeAAT LANDFILLS In BeAAT plant there are two types of landfills that are constructed for final disposal of the waste viz. Class 1 Landfill (Unit 142) - 2 Cells of Capacity 22,400 M3/Cell [one more big cell has been added] Class 2 Landfill. (Unit 143) - 2 Cells of Capacity 16,200 M3/Cell [one more big cell has been added] All types of the wastes, to be disposed of in the landfills, needs to pass certain test described in USEPA SW-846 method 1311 (TCLP) and BeAAT Waste Transfer Protocol. It is responsibility of the OPCOs to analyze and classify the waste before sending it to BeAAT site.

BeAAT: Occupational Health Program To be in line with BeAAT ultimate goal which is to have a sustainable environmental development, it needs to have a committed staff maintaining the facility. Having a clear Occupational Health Program and continuous monitoring of the program would improve staff moral thus more productive efforts and less cases of plant unavailability. We are following a stringent system through a risk based health surveillance using the ADNOC guidelines (COPV3-14) on sixth monthly basis
