5 Achievements supported by a dynamic governance and through regional cooperation High-Level Groups strategic steering and policy guidance on technical topics in European regions that have been identified as being of high priority - Central and South Eastern Europe Gas Connectivity - North Seas Energy Cooperation - Interconnections for South-West Europe - Baltic Energy Market Interconnection Plan (BEMIP) Commission Expert Group on electricity interconnection targets makes proposals on defining interconnection targets for 2030 and on improving interconnection capacity

9 - Western Europe Integration of Iberian Peninsula with the rest of Europe. Integration of RES. Removal of the bottlenecks in the northern BE, and reinforcements between BE-DE, and IT-FR. 110 electricity PCIs Strengthening Europe s grid to deliver on the energy and climate commitments and to address important challenges of the energy systems. - Northern Seas - Enabling off-shore grid to harness significant RES potential. The first direct link between Ireland and Continental Europe. Reinforcements between DK-DE and in the northern DE. - BEMIP Synchronising the Baltic grid with the continental European network (CEN). Reinforcements between the Baltic States to remove existing bottlenecks and to ensure the full operation of interconnectors with PL and SE. - CESEC - Strengthening the existing grid and providing for new interconnections between BG-EL, SI-HU, and RO-Balkans. Integration of the RES. Prevention of uncontrolled energy flows ("loop-flows") in PL and CZ.

10 53 gas PCIs Western Europe has well-developed transmission network with diversified supply sources Important (security of supply and internal market) needs remain in Central Eastern Europe, Eastern Baltic Sea Region and Iberian Peninsula, which are to be addressed by PCIs. GAS PCIs: BEMIP: Connecting Baltic States and Finland with the continental network. CESEC: Establishing interconnectors between the Member States and diversifying gas sources. WESTERN: Connecting Iberian Peninsula to the rest of Europe. SOUTHERN GAS CORRIDOR: Providing Europe with access to a new source of gas Gas demand disruption in case of Ukrainian route disruption 2020 Dependence on RU gas Access to supply sources Q Wholesale gas prices

11 Way forward Timely completion of electricity and smart grids PCIs Reinforcement of the electricity transmission and distribution grids, digitalisation and smartening of the grids and deployment of new infrastructure solutions, particularly in the storage area, and the impact of self-consumption Remaining gas bottlenecks can be largely addressed around 2020

12 What has happened so far in CEF Energy? 2014: First multiannual call for proposals EUR 647 million allocated to 34 actions 2015: Second and third multiannual calls EUR 366 million allocated to 35 actions 2016: Fourth and fifth multiannual calls EUR 707 million allocated to 27 actions 2017: Sixth multiannual call EUR 873 million allocated to 17 actions
