Finding Sustainable Options for End of Life: Product Recycling Solutions Scott DeMuth Vice President, Business Development 2016 Inmar, Inc.
Recycling as an Alternative to Waste Retail model: Use hazardous waste programs for many unsold, expired and/or damaged products Requirements and costs of hazardous waste programs - and a desire to be greener are driving retailers to look for product end-of-life alternatives Shipping materials from one facility to another, only to dispose of them after shipment, has often been interpreted to be waste shipment and disposal (Possible partial future solutions - USEPA) 4
Regulatory Tools for Recycling Conditionally Exempt Generator Continued Use Universal Waste Use as an Ingredient or Substitute Reclamation of Commercial Chemical Products 5
Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generator (CESQG) No hazardous waste manifest for shipping (usually) Usually time/waste pickup advantages Materials can go to a beneficial use facility Technical approach to waste management What to watch out for: Generator status assumptions Any state CESQG requirements/differences Still have DOT/shipping rules Work with your environmental folks! 6
Continued Use Returned Use for Intended purpose never a waste Internal use Ex.: Cleaning chemicals used to clean your facilities Ex.: Vehicle chemicals used to maintain your fleet Control purchasing inventory/supplies Send to consolidator for use as-is What to watch out for: Using far more than you really need Storage, labeling and handling Not Donating waste Loss prevention/inventory processes Excess stockpiling = Not allowed Documentation Used On Site 7
Universal Waste Still hazardous waste, but relaxed rules Fluorescent bulbs Batteries (Lithium, etc. - Also alkaline batteries in CA) Uncommon: Devices with mercury (old thermostats, etc.) Some states have added other materials to UW Electronics (About nine states) Aerosols (CA, CO, MN) Pharmaceuticals (MI, FL) Paint-related (TX) Antifreeze (LA) Oil-based finishes (NJ, PA) What to watch out for: State differences Labeling for UW Closed containers Time limit 1 year 8
Use as Ingredient/Substitute Product Not hazardous waste when Used or reused as ingredients in an industrial process to make a product Used or reused as effective substitutes for commercial products What to watch out for: Must use as-is to make your new product Documentation of process as legitimate 9
Examples of Ingredient/Substitute Products Perfume Returns Nail Polish Returns Soap and Shampoo Returns 10
Reclaimed Commercial Chemical Products Reclamation (via chemical, heat, etc.) of usable materials for the same intended use Contaminated or off-specification gasoline with water, where the gasoline is reclaimed for fuel What to watch out for: Must start with and extractable/usable material Some states don t allow or may restrict this option Must have a legitimate reuse recovered material has a market Documentation 11
Reclaimed nicotine from nicotinecontaining products Expired Nicotine Products Recovered Nicotine New Nicotine Products 12
Real World Recycling Example National retailer Sells food and general merchandise Began a hazardous waste program due to agency enforcement activities Piloted recycling programs in certain difficult jurisdictions Continued use Ingredient/substitute Reclaimed commercial chemical product Results Documented 30% savings (retailer s internal numbers) Expanded recycling programs as a result 13
Other Innovations: Manufacturer Product Stewardship Research and develop specific solutions for manufacturers with consumer items Keurig K-Cups Developed two sizes of easy-to-use containers for commercial entities Created Grounds to Grow On TM website Farm compost and waste-to-energy Whirlpool water filters Refresh & Recycle TM program All brands of refrigerator filters Mail-in recycling kits for customers Coupon incentives Concrete and waste-to-energy 14
Recycling Advantages Can save money versus disposal through hazardous waste Recycling and reuse of both materials and packaging Reduced compliance record-keeping and external reporting Reduced corporate long-term exposure to risk not hazardous waste, not landfilling Fewer training requirements for employees Contributes to sustainability goals and programs 15
