2 HISTORY IS MADE 1970 Congress and President Nixon formed the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which was to govern air and water pollution President Jimmy Carter signed into law the Federal Clean Water Act President George H. Bush signed the Pollution Prevention Act The City of Oklahoma City began a program to comply with this unfunded federal mandate, requiring Phase I cities to develop programs to prevent urban pollution from entering Waters of the US OKC Council approved Drainage Utility Fee to fund program. September 9, 1997 EPA delegated the responsibility for storm water discharges in the state of Oklahoma to the ODEQ.

4 The City of Oklahoma City Storm Water Quality Management A Division of Public Works The goal of the Storm Water Quality Division of business is to provide inspections, enforcement, water quality assessments, public outreach, and household hazardous waste services to citizens, businesses and government agencies so they can comply with the Clean Water Act and enjoy a safe and clean environment.

Detections are tracked to their source and elimination steps are taken. Storm Event/Runoff monitoring Program Monitoring during runoff conditions at representative locations in Oklahoma City. Watershed Characterization Program Data generation of the environmental conditions in 154 outfallwatersheds in Oklahoma City.
7 Environmental Water Quality Floatable Debris Program ~ Study-Categorize and remove floatable debris from waterways collected 121 tons
8 Construction Auditing Program Permitting ~ All construction sites are permitted and inspected for potential pollutant runoff Permitting requirements include - Notice of Intent - Storm Water Pollution Prevention Plan - Site Plan showing erosion controls - Annual permit fee Sites are audited by five Environmental Technicians. The intent of these audits is to reduce or eliminate the potential to pollute surface runoff at each site. 9,000 audits annually.

16 PRESS RELEASES News The City of Oklahoma City City to collect ammunition, computers, tires and medications; April 28 (April 23, 2012) - Oklahoma City will host a special collection for unwanted ammunition, computers, tires and prescription drugs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, April 28 at the State Fairgrounds. The collection is a part of Oklahoma City s Earth month celebration. The drop off site will be on the south side of the fairgrounds, east of the arena. Enter the fairgrounds on Gordon Cooper Boulevard, Gate 5 from North May. Residents just have to drive to the fairgrounds and our crews will do all the heavy lifting, said Environmental Protection Manager Raymond Melton. We ve made the drop off process as convenient as possible so people will continue participating. The collection is open to Oklahoma City residents only. Recyclers must bring their current Oklahoma City water bill stub to prove residency. Syringes, liquids, inhalers, tire rims and wheels will not be accepted. The next special collection will be this fall. Businesses wanting to recycle hazardous waste should contact the Department of Environmental Quality at The Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility at 1621 South Portland accepts a wide variety of hazardous materials from residents homes year-round. The type of products accepted at the facility includes gasoline, automotive fluids, batteries, pesticides, weed killers, swimming pool chemicals and paint-related products. The Facility is open from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday through Friday and 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturdays. The Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility is operated by the Stormwater Quality Division of the Public Works Department. Visit for a list of materials the facility accepts.
