The Dutch experience Dutch Road Administration specifies 2 % Hydrated Lime in Porous Asphalt 90 % of highways/main roads Rijkswaterstaat w/ PA (= ZOAB ) Why PA? Safety (and noise reduction) Lifetime : 11Y (right lane) 17Y (left lanes) No HL = premature stripping bitume 70/100 Aggregates (PSV > 58) Mixed fillers (EN 13043) sources: data: Hagos et al., RILEM 2009; Voskuilen + Verhoef, RILEM 2003; picture: 2. History 78
and French experience French Highway Agency (SANEF) specifies 1.5 % Hydrated Lime in all wearing courses All mixtures (AC, PA, BBTM ) since 2004 Maintenance operations from 12 to 14 yrs (~+20-25% increase of durability) thanks to HL addition sources: data: Raynaud, BTP Matériaux 2009; picture: SANEF 2. History 79
3. Mechanisms of hydrate lime in asphalt Increased resistance to moisture and frost damage Longer lasting durability Improved mechanical properties Increased aging resistance source: critical literature review from 3. Mechanisms 80
«all in one» - synergetic benefits of hydrate 1. Hydrate is an excellent «anti-stripping» agent 2. Hydrate stiffens the HMA, increasing the «rutting resistance» 3. Hydrate interacts with aggregate surface 4. Hydrate is an inhibitor for aging or «oxydation» 5. Hydrate will create a better resistance to low temperature cracking Mechanisms 81
American publications 3. Mechanisms 82
4. Research : Status 2008 Mechanisms Quantification Method 1. Use in Europe today? Austria successful 2. Critical Literature Review (D. Lesueur & All) Scientific Papers on : What Evidence? What Mechanisms? 3. Quantification Method V. Mouillet & All (LRPC) 4. E&E 2012 Istanbul 4 Publications : E&E Posters Research
Research => gaps on know-how 1. Evaluation of the Effects of Lime on Workability of Open Graded and SMA Mixtures (A. Marradi & All Pisa Univ.) comparison fibers/lime 2. Lime as additive for increased durability of asphalt mixes even after recycling (HJ. Ritter & All KOAC) 3. Influence of hydrated lime on the field performance of SMA10 mixtures containing PMB (S. Vansteenkiste & All BRRC) see next slide Research Today 84

Assumptions Following assumptions are made for the: 1. Recycling of the Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP): 50% of the RAP reused for the production of new HMA (replacement of virgin bitumen, sand, gravel and filler) 50% of the RAP reused as sand / gravel for external uses (substitute to sand / gravel) 2. End-of-life of the road (50 years): The asphalt layers will not be removed The surface layers do replace the sub base layer of the future new road 5. LCA 88
