There is so much enthusiasm among these dedicated volunteers. In June, we spent a half-day in a workshop brainstorming ideas for the upcoming year. I commend them for the commitment they have made to provide you the best programs, communications, educational opportunities, marketing and membership support possible. Plan Ahead to Earn Re-Certification Points Now that you have your CPSM/CSM, it s not too early to start thinking about the 60 credits that you will need to renew your certification in three years. That is 20 credits per year. 7 ISM-KANSAS CITY NEWSLETTER PAGE 7 Recruiters Not Calling You? Five Reasons Why And How To Fix It You ve been hoping for a new job, but your phone is silent. No recruiters calling, no job offers; it s so quiet you can almost hear the crickets outside. Maybe it s time to reassess. Does this sound like your job search efforts? You ve sent out hundreds of resumes to countless job postings but received little or no response. You ve left dozens of voice mails to recruiters explaining why you are a perfect fit and they never return your call. You ve tweaked your resume so many times you no longer recognize it. If this describes your situation, you are not alone. Many talented, qualified job seekers get ignored by recruiters and hiring managers simply because their resume has one or more of the following problems. 1. Your resume highlights your lack of industry experience Most recruiters are looking for a point-by-point candidate match when screening resumes. Industry background usually ranks high on the list of qualifying issues. If you don t have experience in that industry, your resume is going straight to the circular file unless you can give them a compelling reason to keep your resume in the stack. If you lack specific industry experience, but you know you have the basic skills for the job, try highlighting your transferable skills instead. Job seekers who lack industry experience can make it past the resume screener by proving their ability with skills they have that transfer from industry to industry. Examples of transferable skills include expertise gained in sales, customer service, finance, accounting, negotiation, cross-functional communications, and/or team building. Look at the skills they need, then figure out how your background is a match. 2. Your resume shouts Overqualified! Nothing scares off a recruiter faster than a candidate who is obviously overqualified for the job. The two main concerns are (1) that the candidate would soon get bored and leave at his earliest convenience, and (2) that the candidate would be too expensive to hire. Even worse is the assumption that the over qualified candidate is on a downward career slope a has-been with all his best years behind him. There are, however, many valid reasons job seekers wish to downsize to jobs with fewer responsibilities. Whatever your reasons, tailor your resume to fit your current career objective. This means you ll want to play down your prior responsibilities, list only relevant education (don t list a PhD if you are applying for a mid-level management position!), and emphasize tactical experience over strategic planning when appropriate. 3. Your resume is crammed with information, but not the right kind

8 PAGE 8 ISM-KANSAS CITY NEWSLETTER Pity the poor recruiter who must get through 200 applicant resumes before lunchtime. If your resume is in the pile, it will get a quick scan and pass over if she can t find what she is looking for in less than 30 seconds. If you have a resume that is disorganized or full of dense blocks of text, how will the recruiter learn anything about you? You ll catch the recruiter s attention if you have a clear, easy-to-read resume that highlights your skills and accomplishments, even at a glance. The first rule of resume effectiveness is relevancy, so edit out the past data and redundant facts that aren t relevant to your current career path. Fill your resume only with the skills needed for that particular job, and you ll go a long way toward getting a recruiter s attention. 4. Your resume has too little information While the strong, silent type may be attractive in men, it just plain flops in a resume. A resume that looks more like an outline just doesn t give the reader enough to work with. Recruiters don t want to guess what you did at your last job. You need to include enough information to give prospective employers a vision of the possibilities if they choose to hire you. If you struggle with what to include in your resume, use job descriptions to help you understand what recruiters will want to find in your resume. Then review your previous jobs to determine what skills you have that will be a good match. 5. Your resume doesn t include accomplishments If you haven t thought lately about how your employer has benefited from having you as an employee, it s a sure bet that your resume is lacking in accomplishments. Remember, as a job seeker you are selling your talents, and you are competing with many others who have the same qualifications as you do. Accomplishments give recruiters a reason to choose you over others for the interview short list. Give screeners ample reason to select you for interview. Highlight how you have saved time, increased efficiency, cut cost and increased client satisfaction. After all, if you don t tell them, nobody else will! If you use this five-point checklist to restructure your resume, you ll soon hear back from recruiters who appreciate qualified, articulate and confident candidates. New export orders drop to lowest level since August Almost one-fourth of supply managers expect implementation of healthcare reform to have large negative impact on their firm. Only 8 percent expect a return to a recession in For Immediate Release: July 2, 2012 OMAHA, Neb. The monthly Business Conditions Index for the nine-state, Mid-America region indicates regional economic growth is likely to weaken slightly in the next three to six months but will remain above growth neutral. The index, a leading economic indicator from a monthly survey of supply managers, declined for a second straight month. Overall index: The index, which ranges between 0 and 100, fell to 57.2 from 57.6 in May and 60.0 in April. Since the end of the recession in 2009, the businesses that we survey have benefited from healthy farm income and exports. While agriculture income continues to grow at a positive, but slower pace, global economic problems are pushing new export orders into negative territory. Europe s economic problems are spilling over into the region via weaker commodity prices generated by the advancing U.S. dollar. Recent gains in the dollar have made U.S. goods less competitively priced abroad, said Ernie Goss, director of Creighton s Economic Forecasting Group and the Jack A. MacAllister Chair in Regional Economics. This month supply managers were asked what was the biggest negative hurdle facing their firm in the next year. Approximately 24 percent reported that the implementation of healthcare reform was the number one negative factor ahead for their company. Another 36 percent indicated that the European economic turmoil represented the largest economic headwind for their company while 13 percent and 14 percent, reported that the housing market and slow wage growth, respectively, were the biggest economic obstacles for their company. The Creighton Economic Forecasting Group has conducted the monthly survey of supply managers in nine states since 1994 to produce leading economic indicators of the Mid-America economy. States included in the survey are Arkansas, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Oklahoma and South Dakota. The forecasting group s overall index, referred to as the Business Conditions Index, ranges between 0 and 100. An index greater than 50 indicates an expansionary economy over the course of the next three to six months. The Business Conditions Index is a mathematical average of indices for new orders, production or sales, employment, inventories and delivery lead time. This is the same methodology used by the National Institute for Supply Management, formerly the Purchasing Management Association, since 1931.

10 PAGE 10 ISM-KANSAS CITY NEWSLETTER Employment: For a sixth straight month, the employment index climbed above growth neutral. The hiring gauge advanced to a healthy 61.8 from May s The Mid-America region continues to outperform the U.S. in terms of job growth. While the region accounts for approximately 10 percent of the nation s employment, it has accounted for almost 15 percent of 2012 U.S. job additions. Based on our survey results, this regional advantage should continue for the next three to six months. Even so, job gains for the rest of 2012 for Mid-America will be down from that experienced in the first half of 2012, said Goss. Wholesale Prices: The prices-paid index, which tracks the cost of raw materials and supplies, slumped to 51.1 from May s 59.9 and well down from April s This is the lowest reading for our inflation gauge since May 2009, two months before the end of the recession. Slower economic growth, European economic turmoil, and a stronger dollar are all contributing to declining inflationary pressures. The degree to which inflationary pressures have cooled has surprised me. This is an important signal and indicates that the Federal Reserve (Fed) can become more aggressive in its stimulation of the U.S. economy without any significant inflation fears. However given current short and long term interest rates, there is little the Fed can do to push growth higher especially with the national elections ahead. The last thing the Fed wishes to do is enter the political fray by abruptly changing policy, said Goss. Confidence: Looking ahead six months, economic optimism, as captured by the June business confidence index, expanded to 56.7 from 55.8 in May. While the index was up for the month, it continues to be restrained by the downturn in U.S. economic growth and Europe s economic problems, said Goss. In the June survey, supply managers were asked if the Obama Administration should initiate another economic stimulus program. Almost three fourths, or 72 percent, said absolutely not. Only 8 percent said yes with the remaining 20 percent unsure. Inventories: The June inventory index declined to 53.9 from May s This is another signal of softening growth as supply managers cut the growth in inventory accumulation in anticipation of slower production in the months ahead, said Goss. Trade: June s export reading for the Mid-America region plummeted to 48.4, lowest since August 2009 and down from May s much stronger At the same time, June imports decreased to 51.5 from 57.1 in May. Given the importance of exports to regional growth over the past year, this pullback in exports is a significant problem if this trend continues. On the other hand, the stronger dollar and somewhat slower regional growth have pushed import growth lower. I expect weak trade numbers in the months ahead for the nine-state region, said Goss.
