Unit 7: Systems Analysis & Design Assessment: 1 Salchester Arms Assessor: Mrs Dominique Stainton Grading Met Grading Met Grading P1 M1 D1 P2 M2 D2 P3 M3 P4 P5 P6 Met STUDENT DECLARATION I confirm that this assignment is my own work and that all use of source material has been properly acknowledged. I am aware that failure to make proper acknowledgement may lead to a charge of alleged plagiarism. SIGNED: DATE: ASSESSOR COMMENTS SIGNED: DATE:
Scenario You work in a junior role for Salchester as an analyst/designer. You have been asked to support the Royal Hotel in the development of a new information system to support their business. Your manager has asked you to provide various reports and presentations of systems analysis and design in an IT environment. Following this a review will take place of the work done. Your presentations may take the form of a Power-Point slide show or a website. Your analysis and design must be fully documented. Task 1 P1 Describe the key drivers for initiating a particular systems analysis activity and explain the particular potential benefits Produce a presentation giving an overview of the various business needs that may force a systems analysis and design activity to take place. Show which of these you might consider to be main factors for the Royal Hotel in Skegness. Task 2 P2 P3 Describe 2 different development life cycle models and their suitability for particular situations Describe the features, advantages and disadvantages of a development methodology Describe the waterfall model approach and rapid applications development approach. Ensure you give details of each stage for both models. Identify which approach would be most suitable for the Royal Hotel. Finally select the most appropriate for the Royal Hotel and show the advantages and disadvantages.
Task 3 P4 (part) M1 (part) D1 D2 (part) Undertake an investigation and document the specification requirements Describe alternative solutions to a given requirements specification and explain in what circumstances such alternative solutions could be chosen Judge the effectiveness of a systems analysis process ensuring that the design is fit for purpose and recommend potential improvements Explain the potential risks in undertaking a systems analysis and design activity and for each one offer ways of reducing or eliminating that risk Prepare a presentation listing the different investigation techniques that you could employ, giving details of how each may be undertaken and showing which ones you consider appropriate for the Royal hotel. You should consider the costs involved in each technique. Contrast the different techniques to obtain information and judge whether, if you could use alternative approaches within the hotel situation, the solution you derive could be different in any way. Evaluate the techniques involved to derive the best possible information to be able to move analysis forward to the design stage, giving recommendations for areas in which you feel the process could be improved. Describe what can go wrong when undertaking the analysis process and give ways in which improvements could be made, explaining the risks involved both from ineffective and effective processes.
Task 4 P4 (part) M1 (part) M2 Undertake an investigation and document the specification requirements Describe alternative solutions to a given requirements specification and explain in what circumstances such alternative solutions could be chosen Take an independent role in planning and undertaking the production of a requirements specification Using the Royal Hotel case study (attached) undertake an analysis of the current booking, reservations and billing process. The system needs to be upgraded to be able to provide more automation and to give additional accounting information. The system requires updating and new software may need to be purchased. The Hotel staff would like a database system if possible. You should provide a full requirements specification showing the scope of the system to be developed, the inputs and outputs involved and any possible processing that might take place. The specification that you produce should be easy for a nonanalytical person to be able to understand remember that a picture speaks a thousand words! You should clearly specify the analytical techniques you have used, explaining your reasons for choosing them. This will build on your choices from the previous task. You should offer the staff at least 2 solutions to their problem, justifying why one is better than the other. Note: you must do this task by yourself but you may use your teacher as an additional resource to fill any gaps in knowledge of such systems that you might have. If you are working with another learner whilst doing this task you will be unable to achieve M2. Task 5 P5 P6 M1 (part) M3 D2 (part) Design and document a new systems Design a test plan Describe alternative solutions to a given requirements specification and explain in what circumstances such alternative solutions could be chosen Explain the choice for a chosen test strategy Explain the potential risks in undertaking a systems analysis and design activity and for each one offer ways of reducing or eliminating that risk Once you have developed the requirements specification and you consider that the enduser will be content with your main proposal, you then need to produce a full design and testing specification. Remembering that the end-users have asked for a database system if possible, you should produce the following: Data structures
Input formats and possible screen layouts Output formats and possible report and screen designs Data dictionary showing possible validation of data involved An E-R model showing hot the data link together Structured English format of any processing required by the system A full set of tests should show normal testing, extreme testing and erroneous testing. You should also indicate whether the tests you propose to perform are black box or white box tests. You will need to explain the different strategic approaches to testing in order to do this. Write a brief report on the process you have carried out, evaluating the analysis that you undertook to see if you had enough information to be able to do the design and testing requirements effectively and efficiently. Clearly show any improvements you would like to have made to the analysis process.
Grading ref P1 P2 P3 P4 Grading Task Achieved (date & initial) Describe the key drivers for initiating a Task 1 particular systems analysis activity and explain the particular potential benefits Describe 2 different development life cycle Task 2 models and their suitability for particular situations Describe the features, advantages and Task 2 disadvantages of a development methodology Undertake an investigation and document the Task 3 & 4 specification requirements P5 Design and document a new systems Task 5 P6 Design a test plan Task 5 M1 Describe alternative solutions to a given Task 3 & 4 requirements specification and explain in what circumstances such alternative solutions could be chosen M2 Take an independent role in planning and Task 4 undertaking the production of a requirements specification M3 Explain the choice for a chosen test strategy (Task 5) D1 Judge the effectiveness of a systems Task 3 analysis process ensuring that the design is fit for purpose and recommend potential improvements D2 Explain the potential risks in undertaking a systems analysis and design activity and for each one offer ways of reducing or eliminating that risk Task 3 & 5
