1 SYLLABUS FOR THE ADVANCED MINE SURVEYING CERTIFICATE Version 1/06 (Legislation Amended June 2012) Examination conditions The candidates shall have passed the Elementary Mine Surveying Certificate or an acceptable equivalent. This certificate will be in two parts: Part A: Part A consists of one closed book and one open book examination papers, namely: A three-hour survey theory paper. A two-hour legislation paper. The above two examination papers can be written separately and to pass Part A the candidate must obtain a minimum of 50% in the Survey and 60% in the Legislation paper. A pass will be retained for 18 months. Reference material for the Legislation will be permitted. Part B: The successful completion of Part A (both examination papers) is a prerequisite for the submission of Part B. A portfolio. A portfolio is a document where the candidate provides evidence of his/her practical survey skills to prove competence in the prescribed or required skills listed under Syllabus (Practical) below. The candidate will be required to submit a portfolio of his/her survey skills for assessment by the examination committee
2 The candidate may be required to present his/her portfolio of evidence to a panel of mine surveying practitioners appointed by the COM Survey Examination Committee. The portfolio must be submitted within a period of 18 months after successful completion of the two theory examinations. Failure to comply will result in the theory part being re-written. To be credited with the advanced survey certificate the candidate will have to pass the theory examinations and have his/her portfolio of evidence accepted by the examination committee. Syllabus (Theory) The syllabus shall consist of the following and the Elementary Mine Surveying Certificate syllabus: 1. Mine Surveying 1.1 Demonstrate an understanding of the theory and principles associated with and perform calculations related to: (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f) (g) (h) (i) (j) (k) (l) (m) (n) (o) Areas and volumes. Tacheometry. Traversing and joins. The adjustments of a closed survey traverse. The adjustment of a closed levelling traverse. Two- and three-pointer problems. Triangulations and triangulation error figures. Trilaterations and trilateration error figures. Simple curves (including setting out simple curves underground and on surface). Lines of intersection. Strike and dip from three-boreholes. Establishing underground surveys from shaft wires. Eccentric set ups. Base lines. Establishing shaft control (vertical and inclined shafts) - 2 -
3 1.2 Demonstrate an understanding of the use, principles of operation, adjustment / calibration and care of a laser, gyro theodolite, electronic distance meter, electronic theodolite, total station, GPS. 2. Mining Legislation Syllabus (Practical) The portfolio of evidence must include eight (8) of the skills listed below. The outcome of the skills selected must be plotted on a plan drawn in accordance with the Mine and Works Regulations. The candidate must be able to: Perform a tacheometric survey and construct a surface plan (including contour lines). Perform a closed surface levelling traverse with the necessary adjustments (calculation and instrument error adjustments). Perform a closed surface survey traverse with the necessary adjustments (direction and Bowditch adjustments). Perform a triangulation survey (with a direction sheet) from at least three known points and obtain the final position of the point by graphical means. Perform a trilateration survey (including a zero error calibration beforehand) from at least three known points and obtain the final position of the point by graphical means. Perform a resection survey from at least four known points. Transfer a survey from surface to underground workings (vertical or inclined). Construct development layouts (flat and inclined development ends). Perform an eccentric set up, observing at least four known points. Locate the position of a point by means of GPS in accordance with best survey practice (site calibration and residues). Establish a base line

7 Annexure A GUIDELINES FOR THE PRACTICAL PORTFOLIO Consists of 3 parts Part A fieldwork Naming and execution Survey field books Ordinary books Self made templates All fieldwork must conform to accepted survey practice. All fieldwork must be signed and cross-referenced. Part B calculations Calculations must conform to an acceptable layout. Calculations must be checked and be accurate. Must be neat and cross-referenced to field work. Part C plan Must represent a minimum area of 1 Ha in extent and show all surface details within the framed area. Must conform to legal requirements enforced by the Mine Health and Safety Act. Must be neat. Recommended scale 1:500 Portfolio When the 3 parts mentioned above are combined, they will form the portfolio. The portfolio must have the following layout: 1. Title page 2. Index 3. Short work related CV of the candidate (including qualifications) 4. Declaration of own work signed by supervisor (Name and designation) 5. Chapter for each comptetency. EACH chapter will consist of a. Title b. Introduction c. Work process d. Fieldwork e. Calculations f. Analysis of Results g. Conclusions/Recommendations The portfolio will be combined in an acceptable format, for example a bound book, file or folio. Neatness and presentation will be taken into account
