SWISSLOG S INNOVATION WORKSHOP Mike Hatrick June 2014
Innovation Workshop Mike Hatrick Swisslog s Innovation Manager Mike Hatrick spends more time than most thinking about the next big idea. Innovation is never easy. Having better ideas really means having ideas with a higher chance of success, or with higher potential. Furthermore, the idea itself is only part of the problem. The paradox is that it is comparatively easy to have ideas. Before joining Swisslog Mike worked in the aerospace industry for nearly 20 years as an engineer in product development and innovation. He subsequently became the leader of an innovation transformation programme at Bombardier Aerospace. Mike s Passion Mike is obsessed with understanding how innovation can be taught, enabled and systemised. At Swisslog Since May 2011 Mike has been Swisslog s Innovation Manager, responsible for growing and sustaining an infrastructure that delivers customer-focussed innovation. Page 2 / June 2014 / Swisslog UK customer day innovation workshop outcome Working within Swisslog s Technology Centre, Mike ensures the continuous optimisation & modernisation of Swisslog s solutions & services. We hope you enjoy the workshop!

Most difficult problems selected #1 Size of products / diversity #2 Obsolescence #3 Ageing workforce #4 Keeping ahead of the competition / changing market Page 9 / June 2014 / Swisslog UK customer day innovation workshop outcome
Choose only 1 Find a solution to the most difficult problem / opportunity 15 minutes
Ideas & solutions discussed Problem: Size of products / diversity Ideas / Solution: Flexible storage locations Flexible bin/tote sizes Flexibility within the bins themselves? Clever Software to understand: Best pick paths Space Weight Cartons for despatch Pallet stack order How full bins are Define spare storage Tailored solution with customised light software to provide this understanding at the customer s fingertips on mobile devices #1 Page 11 / June 2014 / Swisslog UK customer day innovation workshop outcome
