4 Executive Summary An independent assessment of a software tool is a critical step that provides confidence to users and others premised on a formal standards-based assessment. The purpose of this report is to provide an independent, third-party verification of the conformity of ABB s cpmplus Energy Manger v4.3 software with specific clauses and requirements of the ISO 50001:2011 International Standard for Energy Management Systems. Specifically, this assessment seeks to determine the extent to which the cpmplus Energy Manager v4.3 software scope and functionality supports conformance to elements 4.4 and 4.6, and perhaps other key elements, germane to the requirements of the ISO 50001:2011 standard. Verification and Validation (V&V) is the process of ensuring that the software tools developed for use will satisfy functional and other requirements and that each step in the process of building and maintaining the software yields the correct products. The term V&V refers to all of the activities that ensure that the software will function as required. V&V provides a systematic and technical evaluation of software and its associated products. In a typical V&V protocol, it is customary for reviews and tests to be performed at the end of each phase of the development process to ensure requirements are complete, testable and that design, code, documentation, and data satisfy those requirements. Key criteria from IEEE 1074: Standard for Developing a Software Project Life Cycle Process and ISO/IEC 90003:2004 Software engineering Guidelines for the application of ISO 9001:2000 to computer software are applied to customize a V&V protocol methodology for the assessment of the cpmplus Energy Manager v4.3 software. (International Standards Organization 2004; IEEE 2006). The three major V&V activities are Phase I Reviews (including inspections and presentation walk through) and Phase II Report on Evaluation of Documentation, and Phase III (a more rigorous evaluation) at an installed site. Subsequently, significant version changes and other evidence of scope change, manipulation of code, functionality and related modifications to a previously assessed tool may warrant a supplementary assessment of the modified product and implementation to maintain any claims that might be made regarding conformity. cpmplus Energy Manager is an energy management software package developed by ABB that allows clients to: Monitor, report and target energy usage and efficiency (dashboard) 2

5 Plan and forecast plant energy consumption Optimize and schedule energy production and procurement. UL DQS was engaged by ABB to assess whether the scope and functionality of cpmplus EM v4.3 software conformed to key elements of the ISO 50001:2011 standard including Monitoring, Measurement and Analysis (4.6.1) and Energy Performance Indicators (4.4). As configured, the software tool can support energy and cost analysis, albeit as part of a larger management system. The tool can inform users and their advisors of the relative use of energy as compared across key activities in manufacturing and industrial facilities, and where appropriate, can be used to quantify a dollar cost for direct energy inputs. Energy managers who effectively use this tool can therefore identify energy and costs efficiencies associated with production and facility operations. Reference database, conversion factors and other supporting functions are of a quality suitable for inclusion in an analytical platform for the calculation of carbon credits. Based on this assessment, UL DQS confirms that users of cpmplus EM v4.3 software can reliably present the results of the software's proper use to support their conformity with elements 4.4 and 4.61 of the ISO 50001:2011 standard. Organizations that choose to seek certification to management system standards other than the ISO standard may also use this software along with continual improvement processes similar to Plan, Do, Check, and Act to demonstrate Best Practices. Elements of the ISO 50001:2011 standard relevant to this assessment were obtained from International Standard ISO 50001: Environmental Management Systems Requirements for Use. 2011, and are listed below: Monitoring, measurement and analysis The organization shall ensure that the key characteristics of its operations that determine energy performance are monitored, measured and analyzed. Key characteristics shall include at a minimum: a) The energy profile b) Significant energy uses c) Effectiveness of the action plans in achieving objectives and targets The results from monitoring and measurement of the key characteristics shall be recorded. 3

6 4.4 Energy performance indicators 1. Comparison of annual energy use with targeted use. 2. Energy consumption divided by production - a type of specific energy consumption may be used. 3. In some cases, normalized energy consumption can be used, where normalizing factors may be production amount, actual seasonal temperature, length of service time, and so on. Methods for normalization may vary such as linear compensation, or a theoretical calculation. This type of EnPI is useful for explaining the change of EnPI resulting from factors outside of the improvement actions. 4. When the organization chooses EnPIs whose variables are not being measured, a measurement plan should be developed and implemented. After a reliable time interval of measurement, the results should become part of the energy baseline. 5. Statistical tools can be utilized to measure the correlation of potential variables effect on the EnPI. Typical variables may include weather conditions, occupancy, etc. 6. EnPIs can be made relevant for different functions and levels in the organization. For top management, EnPIs are typically translated to relate cost impacts and to support strategic goals. 7. Trends in the EnPI should demonstrate continual improvement of the energy performance 8. EnPI trends that show poor performance may be included in the preventive action process 4
