Profiting from less waste ENVIRONMENTAL TECHNOLOGY BEST PRACTICE PROGRAMME Do you need help to save money and improve your environmental credentials? This leaflet tells you how you can save money and help the environment. It guides you through the Seven s to Successful Waste Minimisation and tells you about the free advice and support material that will help your company save money, while improving its environmental performance.
Generate profit not waste Waste minimisation is a profitable business. Many companies only count the cost of waste disposal. But there are many hidden costs of waste. Instead of wasting raw materials, time and effort, and paying for effluent or landfill disposal, take steps to stop waste occurring in the first place and add to your bottom line. Why take steps to minimise waste? How will waste minimisation help my company save money and benefit the environment? It sounds simple - and it is. Thousands of companies have already discovered that reducing waste is a good way to make a business more profitable and improve environmental performance. With the help and support available from the Environmental Technology Best Practice Programme, your company, too, could be among the success stories. Reduce your bills - minimise what s sent for disposal As environmental regulations tighten there has never been a better time to see where you can stop producing waste in the first place, whether it s solid waste reduction, a decrease in solvent use, or complying with packaging waste regulations. Waste minimisation makes sound business sense Your company is probably spending around 4.5% of total turnover producing waste. Much of this money could be saved - often quickly and simply - through waste minimisation. Free help and advice Your company may have a waste minimisation programme in place already, or have at least considered a scheme. But whatever help you need, the Environmental Technology Best Practice Programme can support you with free advice and resources to steer you every step of the way, to make sure your waste minimisation programme is a continuing success.
1 Think about how much waste is costing 2 Find out about the free help and advice available to you If you have never before considered a waste minimisation programme, now is a good time to start. Perhaps environmental legislation has prompted you to think about solid waste disposal, or the rising costs of water supply and effluent disposal make it even more worthwhile to consider reduction at source. Some introductory literature could help you to realise how much you could save. Waste (Video) An introduction to the benefits of waste minimisation (V159) Waste Minimisation Interactive Tools (WMIT) Easy-to-use software to help you implement a waste minimisation programme (IT96) The Environmental Technology Best Practice Programme is an excellent place to start. The Environment and Energy Helpline on freephone is the gateway to support material and expert help. The Helpline has a panel of specialists who can work on a caller s query for up to two hours free of charge. Ask about site visits. Companies with fewer than 250 employees may be eligible for a free site visit from a specialist who can advise on waste minimisation opportunities. Ask the Helpline about Case Studies that may have already been carried out in your sector. The Programme Summary has information on publications for specific sectors. The Helpline can also put you in touch with Waste Minimisation Clubs - groups of companies that share their ideas and experiences in implementing waste minimisation practices. Members of regional clubs are usually from a variety of business areas and the clubs are often run by local business support organisations that provide a variety of services, such as training. Some clubs are also focused on a particular industry sector. All clubs offer a chance to share views and receive support. Ask the Helpline for a full publications list Read Update for the lastest news from the Environmental Technology Best Practice Programme Call the Environment and Energy Helpline Publications are also available from our web site -
3 Obtain top level commitment 4 Find out where waste is occurring in your company If you need senior management agreement, advise them of the business reasons for minimising waste. Reasons for investment in waste minimisation: Your company many not realise the full cost of waste: often only the expense of disposal is recognised. Throwing out waste is throwing out money. Cost-effective waste minimisation can be a valuable investment, that pays handsome dividends to your company: boost your bottom line by cutting waste and associated expenses. Customers, financial institutions, employees and suppliers have a growing interest in companies environmental performance: waste minimisation will show them how effectively and efficiently you control operations. A walk-round review of a site is often the best and simplest way to identify where waste is occurring. A video has been produced to help you carry out a walkround review. Also, to point companies in the right direction and let them know what to look for, a waste mapping tool is available that will help companies to assess sources of waste in their operation. The publication shows where waste typically occurs, gives tips on how to reduce each waste and encourages a systematic approach to waste minimisation. A Fresh Pair of Eyes: Identifying Waste Minimisation Opportunities (Video) (V217) Waste Mapping - How to Plan Your Route to Less Waste and More Profit (ET219) Waste: A self-help guide for growing businesses (GG38C) Waste Minimisation Pays: Five business reasons for reducing waste Everything you need to present your case (includes presentation on disk) (GG125)
5 Record your base-line information 6 Begin your waste minimisation programme 7 Specific help Plotting progress gives meaningful figures on exactly how much is being saved and where. This is essential to keep up the momentum of a waste minimisation programme. To help companies keep useful figures from the outset of their programme, a waste base-line tool is available. The base-line tool is produced in three formats - as a leaflet (ET225), as a software package (IT249), and as a web page. Whichever method is chosen, all will help companies see precisely what records to keep and how to note initial waste quantities and costs. Comparable data are then recorded on the same basis at a milestone date in the future. Real savings can then be calculated, rather than estimated. Waste Account: Count the Cost of Waste for Your Business and Measure Your Savings (ET225) - leaflet (ET225) - software package (IT249) - web page Waste: A self-help guide for growing businesses (GG38C) Completing the earlier steps will have told you where to start to make the quickest, lowest cost, or biggest savings and will ensure your waste minimisation programme is well-targeted and has the best chance of success. Perhaps you need to concentrate on one area of your business, or maybe it is a priority to get staff motivated, or to prove quick results to ensure continued commitment. These publications and tools will help you throughout your programme. Waste: A self-help guide for growing businesses (GG38C) Waste Minimisation Interactive Tools (WMIT) (IT96) Saving Money Through Waste Minimisation: Raw Material Use (GG25) Saving Money Through Waste Minimisation: Reducing Water Use (GG26) Saving Money Through Waste Minimisation: Teams and Champions (GG27) Finding Hidden Profit Tips for Reducing Waste (ET30) There is a wealth of information available from the Environmental Technology Best Practice Programme to help you tackle specific areas in your waste minimisation programme, such as packaging, and water or solvent use. Your industry area may also be one that is targeted to provide specialist information and advice. To find out, call the Environment and Energy Helpline on freephone Cost-effective Water Saving Devices and Practices (GG67) Tracking Water Use to Cut Costs (GG152) Cutting Costs and Waste by Reducing Packaging Use (GG140) Good Housekeeping Measures for Solvents (GG28)
